Book Synopsis Radical Ideas and the Crisis of Christianity in England, 1640-1740 by : Katherine A East
Download or read book Radical Ideas and the Crisis of Christianity in England, 1640-1740 written by Katherine A East and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the evolving relationship between Church and State, the character of radical thought in Enlightenment England, and the nature of that Enlightenment itself. A tribute to the work of the late Justin Champion, this volume explores the radical religious and political ideas of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England which were at the heart of Champion's intellectual contributions. Drawing on the debates and upheavals that dominated the period from the British Civil Wars to the mid-eighteenth century, the essays in this collection interrogate the challenging relationship between politics and religion which prompted what Champion called a 'Crisis of Christianity'. Diverse perspectives on that crisis are reconstructed, encompassing the experiences of republicans and radicals, philosophers and historians, atheists and clergymen. Through these individuals, a complex discourse which defies easy categorisation is recovered, but which speaks to central discussions concerning the evolving relationship between Church and State, the character of radical thought in Enlightenment England, and indeed the nature of that Enlightenment itself.
Book Synopsis The Anglican Episcopate 1689-1801 by : Nigel Aston
Download or read book The Anglican Episcopate 1689-1801 written by Nigel Aston and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century bishops of the Church of England and its sister communions had immense status and authority in both secular society and the Church. They fully merit fresh examination in the light of recent scholarship, and in this volume leading experts offer a comprehensive survey and assessment of all things episcopal between the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688 and the early nineteenth-century. These were centuries when the Anglican Church enjoyed exclusive establishment privileges across the British Isles (apart from Scotland). The essays collected here consider the appointment and promotion of bishops, as well as their duties towards the monarch and in Parliament. All were expected to display administrative skills, some were scholarly, others were interested in the fine arts, most had wives and families. All of these themes are discussed, and Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the American colonies receive specific examination.
Book Synopsis The Imperial Origins of the King's Church in Early America 1607-1783 by : James Bell
Download or read book The Imperial Origins of the King's Church in Early America 1607-1783 written by James Bell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-02-17 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of the King's church in Early America was shaped by the unfolding imperial policies of the English government after 1675. London-based civil and ecclesiastical officials supervised the extension and development of the church overseas. The recruitment, appointment and financial support of the ministers was guided by London officials. Transplanted to the New World without the traditional hierarchical structure of the church - no bishop served in the colonies during the colonial period - at the time of the American Revolution it was neither an English-American, or American-English church, yet modified in a distinctive manner.
Book Synopsis Atheists and Atheism before the Enlightenment by : Michael Hunter
Download or read book Atheists and Atheism before the Enlightenment written by Michael Hunter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anxiety about the threat of atheism was rampant in the early modern period, yet fully documented examples of openly expressed irreligious opinion are surprisingly rare. England and Scotland saw only a handful of such cases before 1750, and this book offers a detailed analysis of three of them. Thomas Aikenhead was executed for his atheistic opinions at Edinburgh in 1697; Tinkler Ducket was convicted of atheism by the Vice-Chancellor's court at the University of Cambridge in 1739; whereas Archibald Pitcairne's overtly atheist tract, Pitcairneana, though evidently compiled very early in the eighteenth century, was first published only in 2016. Drawing on these, and on the better-known apostacy of Christopher Marlowe and the Earl of Rochester, Michael Hunter argues that such atheists showed real 'assurance' in publicly promoting their views. This contrasts with the private doubts of Christian believers, and this book demonstrates that the two phenomena are quite distinct, even though they have sometimes been wrongly conflated.
