Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleon the First: A Biography Before the appearance of the recent Lives of Napoleon by Professor Sloane and Mr. J. H. Rose, the work here presented in English was generally recognized by competent judges to be the best brief history of Napoleon that had been written. Whatever relative position would be accorded to it to-day, com pared with these biographies, it may be affirmed confidently and without invidiousness that its positive merits are to less great than formerly and that it has the relative advantage in this edition of being comprised in one volume and of being accompanied by a classified bibliography equally well adapted, within its limits, to serve as a guide to the student of Napo leonic history and as a manual for the librarian. Among the positive merits of Fournier's Napoleon I. Should be mentioned the thorough research upon which the narrative is based, the interesting, vivid, and at times dramatic style in which it is written, its broad historical spirit and impartiality of judgment, its excellent proportions, not allotting undue space to certain phases nor neglecting the civil side of Napoleon's career, and, finally, its lucid exposition of the general historical situation and of the various contending factors. These merits so strongly impressed me at the time of its original publication that I felt that a good translation would be a distinct and valuable addition to the large mass of N apo leonic literature already accessible to the English reader. Some years later I secured the author's sanction for such an under taking and entrusted the work of translation to my friend and former pupil Mr. F. H. Schwan of Cleveland. Mr. Schwan executed the task with scholarly fidelity. As I was not able. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleon I, Vol. 1: A Biography In this hope I was not disappointed. The last decade has brought forth works of indisputable value. Dur ing the closing years of the nineteenth century and the opening years of the present one, thousands of hitherto unknown letters of Napoleon have come to light. Many new documents of great value were discovered in the rich storehouse of the Paris arch ives. Research, by investigating the economic pro blems which play such an important part in this period, Opened up a wide field which had hitherto lain practically fallow. Military history threw off its Chauvinistic cloak, and guided by dispassionate oriti cism, contributed much that was vital. Finally, some of the most distinguished historians in France made this subject their theme. Sorel, Chuquet, Vandal, Aulard, and others are now devoting their well attested skill to the times of the great Napoleon. And as the interest in him is not confined to France but reaches far beyond her frontiers, much valuable research is now being done at the sources of the foreign archives. The Germans have long been labouring diligently in this way, but now, British, Italians, Russians, and Americans have entered the field. It is a significant trait of this movement that in Rome, the ideal capital of the world, there is a Revue Napole'onienne which publishes contribu tions in all languages and from all parts of the world dealing with this remarkable man and the remarkable events of his epoch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte The King of kings hung a dark cloud over his star of destiny, when the cruel blow fell on the exiled Wife, whose only crime was that heaven had written her to him childless. That cloud expanded till it darkened all the sky and bolt after bolt came down upon his lofty brow, and laid it low on a captive's pillow within the confines of a rocky island, Where, Prometheus-like, he was compelled to feel the wasting power of burning memories and awakened conscience, until death removed him to a more righteous adjudication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Napoleon Bonaparte The Publishers believe that in adding the Life of Napo 'eon Bonaparte to their biographical series, they are supplying a want that has long been felt by the public. Although several works have issued from the English press, in which the extraordinary career of Napoleon has been treated at great length, and although many disputed passages in his history have received the most minute and searching investigation, the Publishers are not acquainted with any volume which within a moderate compass and at a small price contains the essence of the researches of late years, and gives a fair and complete account of the life of the French soldier and statesman. The present work is intended to supply the deficiency. The re-establishment of the Napoleon dynasty in France served to increase the interest in the life and fortunes of the founder of this wonderful family. In these pages, it is hoped that a fitting memorial will be found of that hero who was once the terror of the nations, and whose deeds have since attracted the attention of the woild. This knowledge obtained, and the work having been placed at my entire disposal by the kind ness of the gentleman who held the property, it is with great gratification that I now issue a new edition of this important history, at a price which will place it within the means of thousands to whom its former cost rendered the purchase altogether impracticable. The great object of my ambition, the diffusion of my father's fame, is thus eminently promoted. My revi sion of the text has been, of course, limited to such corrections as occurred to me of names, dates, and figures, and even in these respects I have had very little to do. Book excerpt: Author McLynn explores the Promethean legend from his Corsican roots, through the chaotic years of the French Revolution and his extraordinary military triumphs, to the coronation in 1804, to his fatal decision in 1812 to add Russia to his seemingly endless conquests, and his ultimate defeat, imprisonment, and death in Saint Helena. McLynn aptly reveals the extent to which Napoleon was both existential hero and plaything of fate, mathematician and mystic, intellectual giant and moral pygmy, great man and deeply flawed human being.
