While it has passed through a number of editions since, there has been no attempt to bring it up to date nor to revise it in any way, and although there has been much to preoccupy me, especially in other lines Of work, I recognize the fact that there has been no excuse for such neglect. It has now been entirely rewritten on a changed plan of arrangement and made to cover the great progress in the science which has taken place since it first appeared. Some material considered unnecessary has been eliminated so that it might be kept within the same compass that has proved so convenient for those who could not devote to the subject the time required by the larger treatises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Introduction to Chemistry IN the preparation of this volume the purpose has been to present an historical account of the more important facts and theories of chemistry, as these disclosed themselves to the original workers in this branch of science. No attempt has been made to write a formal History of Chemistry, either as a survey of the various periods into which the history of the science may be divided, or in the more usual biographical form. The material has been classified by subjects rather than by authors; but it will be found that under this system the work of individual experimenters is described quite as fully as in a biographical survey, whilst in the case of certain chemists, such as Priestley, Lavoisier and gay-lussac, it has been possible to include detailed descriptions of experimental work which could scarcely have found a place in a brief biography. The Biographical Index provides a key to the work of each author as it is described in the text, and contains most of the essential items for an account in narrative form of the achievements of the great pioneers of chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Modern Chemistry The beginner in the study of chemistry finds interest and pleasure, first of all, in the remarkable new facts which are placed before him, and this is both natural and desirable. N 0 one can master the science without much study of proper ties and reactions, and minute acquaintance with as many phenomena as possible is a fundamental requisite. Modern chemistry has, however, a number of general laws which appear. Everywhere through it, connecting various facts in the most interesting way. Before study has gone very far it becomes necessary to begin the statement of these laws and to indicate how the facts already learned group them selves about them. Two purposes are served by this method of presentation. First, a real science of chemistry begins to unfold itself to the student, and second, the acquisition of more new facts is made easier and more interesting. We have planned in this book to present a sufficient number of facts and experiments to fill the time usually devoted to a first course, and at the same time we have endeavored to fit these facts, as far as possible, to the Simpler of the general laws now firmly established as the basis of the science of chemistry. Greene, whose perfect familiarity with the French language and thorough competence, at the same time, in chemistry I have had occasion to appreciate. The translation is, then, a faithful, or even improved, representation of the original work, in which he will certainly have detected and corrected some faults. The French editions succeed each other rapidly, showing that this little book responds to an educational need. It has been the endeavor to keep it up with the current of the latest discoveries, and in it to condense a considerable number of exact and well-selected facts, without banishing the theory which binds them together. Thus, the origin and foun dation of the atomic theory have been given, as far as possible, in historical order. The notions concerning atomicity, so im portant for the appreciation of the structure of combinations and for the interpretation of chemical reactions, are presented in an elementary form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry for Young People After this general acquaintance is secured, the commoner elements are taken up, and the reader is told those more important. Facts about each which should be known, even to one who desires no ex pert knowledge of their qualities. After obtain ing such general knowledge of these elements, their qualities and their uses, the reader is led to enter a little more deeply into the greater principles that enable us to understand their action one upon an other, and to become acquainted with the Periodi cal Tables wherein the relations of all elements to one another is shown to depend upon their atomic weight. These relations include the subjects of valence, of atomic heat, and, generally, of chemical action as classified by modern chemists. To the enormous subject of organic chemistry, or the chemistry of carbon compounds, but one chapter is given; but in this are set forth such general laws and rules as enable the reader to comprehend the complexity of the subject and the methods by which chemists are able to make new compounds and to predict their qualities. After this general review of the subject, there follows a discussion of the history of chemistry and of its relation to human progress, which con tains, though in brief form, the important facts enabling young readers to know the importance of the part played by modern scientific chemistry in practical life. Then follows a set of tables which give in a complete way the essential facts in relation to all elements, thus completing those tables which in the earlier part of the book are confined to the more familiar elements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Chemistry A chemical change takes place when a substance, or substances, undergoes a change into a new substance, or substances, with widely different properties. Chemical changes usually involve the production of or the absorption of a large amount of heat. The burning of charcoal is one of the best known and most typical of chemical changes. Conservation of Matter: The amount of matter in the universe is constant; matter is not created or destroyed. This statement is known as the law of the conservation of matter. Physical changes are those in which bodies of substance are changed in any way without being altered in their chemical nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Early Treatises on Technological Chemistry A characteristic of this and the other books of the series is the absence of concealment under misleading names of the substances to be used and the processes to be followed. The alchemist was always at great pains to withhold the secrets of his art from those deemed ignorant and unworthy, and he was in the habit of express ing himself in an allegorical and enigmatical style, which is one of the chief obstacles to understanding what the alchemists would be at. In this book, however, there is nothing of the kind, and if there is obscurity occasionally, it is due less to the language employed than to the difficulty of identifying the bodies mentioned, or of seeing precisely what is the drift of the operation described. This book exhibits very fairly the practical knowledge of chemistry at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Many of the processes seem very roundabout and even absurd now, but then they were the best to be had, and it must be remembered that three and a half centuries have elapsed from the date of the book which records them, centuries filled with research into the causes of the changes which at that time were only slightly known after the most tentative fashion. The receipts are not arranged in any regular way, but for our present purpose it may suffice to consider very briefly the contents of the book under two main heads: A. Substances, and B. Processes.
