Book excerpt: The narrative in your hands is about a remarkable Muslim scholar of Hadith from the world of learning – Imam Muhammad ibn Isma'eel al-Bukhari – who was undoubtedly the most eminent scholar of Ahadith that the world has seen. It was said of him that when he glanced through a book, he would remember it by heart. He had not only memorized thousands of Ahadith by heart, but he was also an expert in the Science of Ahadith. His book, which is commonly known as Sahih al-Bukhari, is highly regarded among Muslims, and considered the most authentic collection of Ahadith, even ahead of the Muwatta' of Imam Malik and Sahih Muslim by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, who also happened to be one of his students. Most scholars throughout history consider it to be second only to the Qur'an in terms of authenticity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī is unsurprisingly the most widely recognized book among Muslims after the Qurʾān. Curious readers of Bukhārī’s magnum opus are often left with burning questions that lie beyond its contents. Who was Imām Bukhārī? How and why did he write the Ṣaḥīḥ? How was it transmitted? Are there any reliable extant manuscripts of the work? In this introduction, Dr. Muṣṭafā al-Aʿẓamī answers these questions in a simple and accessible manner. This translation, alongside added annotations and appendices, presents and expands on al-Aʿẓamī’s research for an English readership, for whom there is a dearth of resources on the subject.

Book excerpt: A near-death experience (NDE) is a profound personal experience associated with death or impending death. When positive, such experiences may encompass a variety of sensations including detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, total serenity, security, warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light. When negative, such experiences may include sensations of anguish and distress. Islam teaches that there is life after death, and this is known as Akhirah. In Islam, it is Allah (God) who decides when a person dies. Those who have performed more good deeds than bad will enter Jannah, or Paradise. Jannah is a place described as a 'garden of everlasting bliss' and a 'home of peace'. In Jannah, there will be no sickness, pain, or sadness. Those who have performed more bad deeds than goodwill enters Jahannam or Hell. This is a place of physical and spiritual suffering.

Book excerpt: This work comprises the historical chapters of the most important compilations of Traditions, Kitāb al-Jāmi‘ aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥ by Imām Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl al-Bukhārī and depicts the beginning of the Prophet’s revelation, the merits of the Prophet’s Companions and the early years of Islam up to and including the decisive turning point of Islamic history, the Battle of Badr. Although the author set out to translate the whole of the Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, he could not accomplish the task for much of his manuscripts were destroyed in the chaos and the inter-religious holocaust that followed upon the outbreak of the Second World War and the partition of the Indian subcontinent. However this led to his realisation, in his own words, “ten years spent on analysing, translating and clarifying the Ṣaḥīḥ were a God-willed preparation for a work which for a very long time had represented an enticing dream to me: a new rendering into English of the Message of the Qur’ān and Commentary based on the principle that the doors of ijtihād have never been and never could be closed to man’s searching intellect.” The result was the author’s Qur’ānic commentary under the title The Message of the Qur’ān, published in 1980. Any scholarly reader of that work will easily recognise how much of the spirit of ḥadīth-and, hence, of the immortal labour of Imām Bukhārī-has gone into his interpretation of the word of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam has been one of the most powerful religious, social and political forces in history. Over the last 1400 years, from origins in Arabia, a succession of Muslim polities and later empires expanded to control territories and peoples that ultimately stretched from southern France to East Africa and South East Asia. Yet many of the contributions of Muslim thinkers, scientists and theologians, not to mention rulers, statesmen and soldiers, have been occluded. This book rescues from oblivion and neglect some of these personalities and institutions while offering the reader a new narrative of this lost Islamic history. The Umayyads, Abbasids, and Ottomans feature in the story, as do Muslim Spain, the savannah kingdoms of West Africa and the Mughal Empire, along with the later European colonization of Muslim lands and the development of modern nation-states in the Muslim world. Throughout, the impact of Islamic belief on scientific advancement, social structures, and cultural development is given due prominence, and the text is complemented by portraits of key personalities, inventions and little known historical nuggets. The history of Islam and of the world's Muslims brings together diverse peoples, geographies and states, all interwoven into one narrative that begins with Muhammad and continues to this day.

Book excerpt: The hadith, the sayings attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, form a sacred literature which for the Muslims ranks second in importance only to the Qur'an itself. As a source of law, ethics and doctrine, the vast corpus of hadith continue to exercise decisive influence. Islamic scholarship has hence devoted immense efforts to gathering and classifying the hadith, and ensuring their authenticity. This book is the only introduction in English which presents all the aspects of the subject. It explains the origin of the literature, the evolution of the isnad system, the troubled relationship between scholars and the state, the problem of falsification, and the gradual development of a systematic approach to the material. This edition is a fully revised and updated version of the original, which was first published in 1961 to considerable scholarly acclaim. Muhammad Zubayr Siddiqi was Professor of Islamic Culture in the University of Calcutta.

This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunnis consider the two books of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim as correct from the beginning to the end, dealing with them like revelation. They have based all their principle beliefs on the basis of their content. Sunni researchers refrain from considering as fabricated any tradition that has appeared in these two books, for the position of these two books is very high in their eyes. The present work studies these two books and some of the traditions they contain, in order to make it clear that all the traditions that these two books contain are not authentic (sahih) and that one cannot say that the traditions that have not appeared in these two books are not authentic.
