Book excerpt: The Keystone State, so nicknamed because it was geographically situated in the middle of the thirteen original colonies and played a crucial role in the founding of the United States, has remained at the heart of American history. Created partly as a safe haven for people from all walks of life, Pennsylvania is today the home of diverse cultures, religions, ethnic groups, social classes, and occupations. Many ideas, institutions, and interests that were formed or tested in Pennsylvania spread across America and beyond, and continue to inform American culture, society, and politics. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the first comprehensive history of the Keystone State in almost three decades. In it distinguished scholars view Pennsylvania's history critically and honestly, setting the Commonwealth's story in the larger context of national social, cultural, economic, and political development. Part I offers a narrative history and Part II offers a series of "Ways to Pennsylvania's Past" -- nine concise guides designed to enable readers to discover Pennsylvania's heritage for themselves. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the result of a unique collaboration between The Pennsylvania State University Press and The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The result is a remarkable account of how Pennsylvanians have lived, worked, and played through the centuries.

Book excerpt: EASTWICK LETTERS transcribes and illustrates 117 individual sheets written 1844–51 by Andrew McCalla Eastwick, his wife Lydia, their children, and business associates as the family set up works, and home in 19th century St. Petersburg, Russia. Eastwick was one of three partners in the Philadelphia firm of Harrison, Winans & Eastwick. The business had been awarded a $3 million/ five-year contract to build rolling stock, (locomotive engines and cars) for Czar Nicholas I for a railroad to connect St. Petersburg and Moscow. The enterprise required Eastwick and partners to take possession of a large Imperial industrial complex on the Neva River, known as Alexandroffsky Head Mechanical Works. Once in operation they were to use serf labor and Russian materials to fulfill the contract. Concurrently, Major George Washington Whistler (West Point civil engineer and father of the famous artist), was to oversee the construction of the 420 miles of railway track and railbed required. Presented chronologically and extensively illustrated, EASTWICK LETTERS opens a window into the private emotions of the writers, and illustrates a colorful story of Russian life and times at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. More so than early photographs, the letters vividly reveal the inner thoughts of each writer, and what they observed in a foreign land. In 1851 the Eastwick family returned to Philadelphia where Andrew purchased Bartram’s Garden along the Schuylkill River and saved it from industrial development. Years later after Andrew’s passing, Lydia Eastwick bequeathed the property to the City of Philadelphia where today, Bartram’s Garden is a landmark. The conservatory is open to the public and carries on the legacy of John Bartram, first American botanist to the Colonies.

Book Synopsis Alexis in America by : Lee A. Farrow
Download or read book Alexis in America written by Lee A. Farrow and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1871, Alexis Romanov, the fourth son of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, set sail from his homeland for an extended journey through the United States and Canada. A major milestone in U.S.-Russia relations, the tour also served Duke Alexis's family by helping to extricate him from an unsuitable romantic entanglement with the daughter of a poet. Alexis in America recounts the duke's progress through the major American cities, detailing his meetings with celebrated figures such as Samuel Morse and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and describing the national self-reflection that his presence spurred in the American people. The first Russian royal ever to visit the United States, Alexis received a tour through post-Civil War America that emphasized the nation's cultural unity. While the enthusiastic American media breathlessly reported every detail of his itinerary and entourage, Alexis visited Niagara Falls, participated in a bison hunt with Buffalo Bill Cody, and attended the Krewe of Rex's first Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. As word of the royal visitor spread, the public flocked to train depots and events across the nation to catch a glimpse of the grand duke. Some speculated that Russia and America were considering a formal alliance, while others surmised that he had come to the United States to find a bride. The tour was not without incident: many city officials balked at spending public funds on Alexis's reception, and there were rumors of an assassination plot by Polish nationals in New York City. More broadly, the visit highlighted problems on the national level, such as political corruption and persistent racism, as well as the emerging cultural and political power of ethnic minorities and the continuing sectionalism between the North and the South. Lee Farrow joins her examination of these cultural underpinnings to a lively narrative of the grand duke's tour, creating an engaging record of a unique moment in international relations.
Book Synopsis Founding Families Of Pittsburgh by : Joseph F Rishel
Download or read book Founding Families Of Pittsburgh written by Joseph F Rishel and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2005-06-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Pittsburgh and its surrounding area grew into an important commercial and industrial center, a group of families emerged who were distinguished by their wealth and social position. Joseph Rishel studies twenty of these families to determine the degree to which they formed a coherent upper class and the extent to which they were able to maintain their status over time. His analysis shows that Pittsburgh's elite upper class succeeded in creating the institutions needed to sustain a local aristocracy and possessed the ability to adapt its accumulated advantages to social and economic changes.
Book Synopsis Harrisburg Industrializes by : Gerald G. Eggert
Download or read book Harrisburg Industrializes written by Gerald G. Eggert and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1850, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was a community like many others in the U. S., employing most of its citizens in trade and commerce. Unlike its larger neighbors, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, Harrisburg had not yet experienced firsthand the Industrial Revolution. Within a decade, however, Harrisburg boasted a cotton textile mill, two blast furnaces and several iron rolling mills, a railroad car manufactory, and a machinery plant. This burst of industrial activity naturally left its mark on the community, by within two generations most industry had left Harrisburg, and its economic base was shifting toward white-collar governmental administration and services. Harrisburg Industrializes looks at this critical episode in Harrisburg's history to discover how the coming of the factory system affected the life of the community. Eggert begins with the earliest years of Harrisburg, describing its transformation from a frontier town to a small commercial and artisanal community. He identifies the early entrepreneurs who built the banking, commercial, and transportation infrastructure, which would provide the basis for industry at mid-century. Eggert then reconstructs the development of the principal manufacturing firms from their foundings, through the expansive post-Civil War era, to the onset of deindustrialization near the end of the century. Through census and company records, he is able to follow the next generation of craftsmen and entrepreneurs as well as the new industrial workers&—many of then minorities&—who came to the city after 1850. Eggert sees Harrisburg's experience with the factory system as &"second-stage,&" or imitative, industrialization, which was typical of many, if not most, communities that developed factory production. At those relatively few industrial centers (Lowell and Pittsburgh, for example) where new technologies arose and were aggressively impose on workers, the consequences were devastating, often causing alienation, rebellion, and repression. By contrast, at secondary centers like Harrisburg (or Reading, Scranton, or Wilmington), industrialization came later, was derivative rather than creative, was modest in scale, and focused on local and regional markets. Because the new factories did not compete with local crafts, few displaced artisans became factory hands. At the same time, an adequate supply of local native-born workers forestalled an influx of immigrants, so Harrisburg experienced little ethnic hostility. Ultimately, therefore, Eggert concludes that the introduction of an industrial order was much less disruptive in Harrisburg than in the major industrial sites, primarily because it did not alter so profoundly the existing economic and social order.
