Book Synopsis Famous First Bubbles by : Peter M. Garber
Download or read book Famous First Bubbles written by Peter M. Garber and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-08-24 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jargon of economics and finance contains numerous colorful terms for market-asset prices at odds with any reasonable economic explanation. Examples include "bubble," "tulipmania," "chain letter," "Ponzi scheme," "panic," "crash," "herding," and "irrational exuberance." Although such a term suggests that an event is inexplicably crowd-driven, what it really means, claims Peter Garber, is that we have grasped a near-empty explanation rather than expend the effort to understand the event. In this book Garber offers market-fundamental explanations for the three most famous bubbles: the Dutch Tulipmania (1634-1637), the Mississippi Bubble (1719-1720), and the closely connected South Sea Bubble (1720). He focuses most closely on the Tulipmania because it is the event that most modern observers view as clearly crazy. Comparing the pattern of price declines for initially rare eighteenth-century bulbs to that of seventeenth-century bulbs, he concludes that the extremely high prices for rare bulbs and their rapid decline reflects normal pricing behavior. In the cases of the Mississippi and South Sea Bubbles, he describes the asset markets and financial manipulations involved in these episodes and casts them as market fundamentals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure-directed synthesis aims at the design and preparation of novel solid-state structures; using the structure-directing capability of some molecular additive, the so-called structure-directing agent. This general train of thought has led to the development of many weird and wonderful strategies. The book presents an in-depth review of the field and discusses the potential for further developments. Some of the topics are listed under ‘Keywords’. The book references 343 original resources with their direct web links for in-depth reading. Keywords: Directed Synthesis, Multicomponent Colloidal Nanostructures, Nanoparticle-Seed Surfaces, Photocatalytic and Photo-Electrochemical Applications, Synthesis of Nanostructured Metal Oxides and Metal Oxalates, Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors and Metals with Surface Plasmon-Resonance Active Bands, Mesoporous Materials Possessing Multilevel Architectures, Spatially Distinct Nanostructured Organic and Inorganic Arrays, 2- and 3-Dimensional Periodic Composite Structures, Protein-Protein Interaction and DNA Hybridization, Polynuclear Complexes and Coordination Polymers of 3d Metals, Ultra-Small Metal Nanoclusters, Biomolecule-Nanocluster Composites, Nanostructured Sulphur-Carbon Nanotube Cathode.

Book Synopsis Control Systems for Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning by : Roger W. Haines
Download or read book Control Systems for Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning written by Roger W. Haines and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the First Edition of this classic text, Roger Haines devised a simple building-block method which enabled students to quickly learn about the operating principles and applications of all the basic devices and subsystems used in HVAC control. The new Fifth Edition, completely revised by Douglas Hittle, takes into account the many technological changes that have arisen since then. Crystal-clear guidelines on combining control devices, circuits, computers, and HVAC equipment into efficient control systems that are accurate and energy-efficient are presented along with hundreds of charts and illustrations which provide data critical to the understanding and design of modern HVAC systems. These include: psychrometric charts and tables relating to optimal levels of temperature and humidity at specific altitudes: block/flow diagrams which show control component function; circuit diagrams of important electrical control system components; schematic diagrams showing the configuration of various control systems.

Book Synopsis Self-organized Motion by : Satoshi Nakata
Download or read book Self-organized Motion written by Satoshi Nakata and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-propelled objects (particles, droplets) are autonomous agents that can convert energy from the environment into motion. These motions include nonlinear behaviour such as oscillations, synchronization, bifurcation, and pattern formation. In recent years, there has been much interest in self-propelled objects for their potential role in mass transport or their use as carriers in confined spaces. An improved understanding of self-organized motion has even allowed researchers to design objects for specific motion. This book gives an overview of the principles of self-propelled motion in chemical objects (particles, droplets) far from their thermodynamic equilibrium, at various spatial scales. Theoretical aspects, the characteristics of the motion and the design procedures of such systems are discussed from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics and examples of applications for these nonlinear systems are provided. This book is suitable for researchers and graduate students interested in physical and theoretical chemistry as well as soft matter.
