Book excerpt: The Bias Beneath the Facts: Education in a Democratic Society is a text for introductory teacher-training courses. The text is based on the premise that in any democratic society education is an on-going debate. It introduces students to that debate and invites them to participate in the dialogue as professionals. Many textbooks on education present information as if it had come from an all-knowing authority figure. This book stresses that there are no truths or facts. Rather, every item of information is an opinion. The strength of the opinion is determined by the evidence presented to support it. Reading through the text and completing the activities allows students to form and reflect on their own opinions, and by doing so find their own professional voices. Each chapter begins with two sections designed to engage students and get them thinking about featured readings: ""What Is the Topic?"", and ""Why Do I Need to Know This?"" The chapters conclude with discussion questions that help students identify biases. By having them question what they read and learn to distinguish personal and professional opinion, the book teaches pre-service educators to read and think critically. Discussion questions are followed by activities that deepen the learning experience, and online resources that allow for further independent exploration. Odd-numbered chapters give topic overviews, while even-numbered chapters present articles written by a variety of authors on these chosen topics. While it is especially beneficial in Introduction to Education classes, The Bias Beneath the Facts can also be used in courses on Social Studies Education, K-12 Administration, the History of Education, and any course related to teacher professionalization. The author/editor's e-mail address is included at the end of each chapter so that students and professors can contact her and continue the debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, most trial lawyers and consultants accept the fact that all legal decision makers decide cases by first making up their own version of the case story. Yet, few have yet to fully adjust their practices to meet the demands of that reality. Facts Still Can’t Speak for Themselves offers specific methods for trial professionals to increase their reach into the full range of potential stories decision makers can construct (and will construct) during any single case, and then shows you how to refine those stories into the one most compelling presentation for any legal decision maker to judge, in any legal decision-making venue. What you’ll find inside: * How the stories decision makers imagine affect verdicts as much as their backgrounds and beliefs or the attorney’s presentation in court * Which focus group method reveals the real range of stories decision makers can build from your case * How to profitably apply focus group results in negotiations and mediation equally well as in trials * How to run voir dire like a focus group (and a focus group like voir dire) improving both in the processand how to avoid common misleading mistakes * How focus group deliberations are the least valuable part of the process * How asking focus group participants which side in a case they “like” could be a major mistake * Why you should think twice before ever again asking a “why” question or using the word “any” during voir dire or in focus groups * How to establish immediate rapport with decision makers and to manage how they build their perceptions of your client’s case storyin time to affect their final judgments In this new edition, Eric Oliver dives deeply into cutting-edge research in communication, human judgment, perception, and influence and breaks down the process of turning theoretical abstractions into effective persuasive practices that help legal decision makers hearand seethe case story from your client’s point of view. Each chapter is now supplemented with some of the most relevant developments in the science of decision making, as well as with the decade of additional experience Eric has acquired working with trial lawyers and their clients since the first edition was published in 2005.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Instinct of Workmanship and the State of the Industrial Arts" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "The following work attempts an analysis of such correlation as is visible between industrial use and wont and those other institutional facts that go to make up any given phase of civilisation. It is assumed that in the growth of culture, as in its current maintenance, the facts of technological use and wont are fundamental and definitive, in the sense that they underlie and condition the scope and method of civilization in other than the technological respect, but not in such a sense as to preclude or overlook the degree in which these other conventions of any given civilisation in their turn react on the state of the industrial arts. The analysis proceeds on the materialistic assumptions of modern science, but without prejudice to the underlying question as to the ulterior competency of this materialistic conception considered as a metaphysical tenet. The inquiry simply accepts these mechanistic assumptions of material science for the purpose in hand, since these afford the currently acceptable terms of solution for any scientific problem of the kind in the present state of preconceptions on this head..." (Preface) Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) was an American economist and sociologist. He is well known as a witty critic of capitalism. Veblen is famous for the idea of "conspicuous consumption." Conspicuous consumption, along with "conspicuous leisure," is performed to demonstrate wealth or mark social status. Veblen explains the concept in his best-known book, The Theory of the Leisure Class. Within the history of economic thought, Veblen is considered the leader of the institutional economics movement. Veblen's distinction between "institutions" and "technology" is still called the Veblenian dichotomy by contemporary economists.

It Has The Distinction Of Being An Unbiased, Factual Statement, Which Has Been Lacking, Despite The Fact That It Has Been One Of The Favourite Topics Of The Vedic Scholars And The Indo-Europeanists. It Is Written With A Clearcut Objective Of Knowing The Facts About The Aryas, Her Comments Try To Guide The Reader As How To Understand Them. This Book Thus Had A Limited Aim. Bare Facts Are Documented And Not Stretched To Suit The Exigencies Of A Theory. The Author Has No Theory To Propound. But At The Same Time No External Framework Is Accepted. The Romantic Dreams Woven By The Earlier Generations Of Scholars Are Not Found In The Rgveda, The Main Source Of Information. And Therefore It Is Possible To See To What Extent It Was Just The Play Of Fancy. With These Facts, The Author Reconstructs The Historical Events, With Supporting Archaeological Evidence.
