Book Synopsis Early Anglo-Saxon Belt Buckles (late 5th to Early 8th Centuries A.D.) by : Sonja Marzinzik
Download or read book Early Anglo-Saxon Belt Buckles (late 5th to Early 8th Centuries A.D.) written by Sonja Marzinzik and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2003 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belt buckles, which were worn by both men and women in Anglo-Saxon England, not only had an obvious practical function, they also had a potent social significance for their wearers. Their archaeological value lies in the fact that, in a period in which coins were scarce, they can be used as dating evidence. This substantial volume explores the social aspects of dress accessories whilst presenting a typology and chronology of finds. Much of the study comprises an illustrated catalogue of over 1,200 examples. Tables and maps also explore the distribution of buckle types and their association with other objects. A useful reference.

Book Synopsis Texas Aggie Medals of Honor by : James R. Woodall
Download or read book Texas Aggie Medals of Honor written by James R. Woodall and published by Williams-Ford Texas A&M Univer. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Medal of Honor represents a story of gallantry, courage, and sacrifice. Conceived in the early 1860s, the Medal of Honor, awarded "in the name of the Congress of the United States," has been presented to more than 3,000 members of the United States armed forces. Seven of the 464 Medals of Honor awarded during World War II went to Texas Aggies. Author James R. Woodall, a 1950 graduate of Texas A&M University and a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, carried out a dedicated search of archives, family collections, and scores of other resources to gather, for the first time, the complete stories of these seven courageous men. Texas Aggie Medals of Honor will undoubtedly be of great interest to former students of Texas A&M University, members of the Corps of Cadets, and others associated with the university and its distinguished tradition of military training and service. But the book will also hold great appeal, in the words of one advance reader, "to those interested in the nation's highest award for valor and the individual stories of ordinary men who did extraordinary things when confronted by life-threatening situations in combat." " . . . a fast moving narrative of short, thoughtful portraits of the lives of seven World War II Texas Aggie Medal of Honor recipients. . . has meaning for readers both inside and outside the Texas Aggie Nation, and they will certainly grasp Woodall's admiration for these seven men and appreciate his tenacious research into their histories."--Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Book Synopsis Reminiscences Of The Civil War And Other Sketches by : Sergeant Ralph J. Smith
Download or read book Reminiscences Of The Civil War And Other Sketches written by Sergeant Ralph J. Smith and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A short but colorful memoir by a sergeant in the 2nd Texas regiment, which served with distinction in the Western Theatre of the Civil War. Sergeant Smith volunteered in the first months of the outbreak of the Civil War, but his first real taste of the conflict came as part of the Army of the Mississippi under General Albert Sidney Johnson at Shiloh. The author recounts the confused nature of the fighting around the Hornet’s Nest and the sorrow of the repulse but above all the deep sense of loss at the death of their Confederate leader. After duties around the outskirts of Vicksburg, Smith and his comrades were among the Confederate soldiers that were penned up there by the Union forces under General Grant. Despite a fierce resistance the Confederate soldiers of Vicksburg were forced to surrender and the troops were paroled. Eventually exchanged, Smith spent the rest of the war in the garrison of Galveston under General Magruder before settling in San Marcos Texas.
Download or read book Silver Buckles written by Grace Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She staggered a great man. He was reeling. She was overwhelmed. Fitzwilliam Darcy, standing irritably at the edge of the Meryton assembly, declines to dance with Elizabeth Bennet. In a mood of revulsion, he rejects her without concern of being overheard. Country pretensions are always in need of squashing, and what better way to make clear he would not partner anyone outside his party? However, when he looks over at her, she does not appear humbled at all. She is secretly laughing at him! Elizabeth is perversely delighted to encounter such an outrageous snob as Mr. Darcy. When he approaches her with a stiff, graceless apology, she coolly brushes him off, believing that, like most annoyances, he will go away when properly snubbed. But no! The man then puts out his hand and, not wishing to create a scene, compels her to stand up with him. They go through the steps of the dance mutually disdainful and intent upon wounding each other. But by the time the musicians end their tune, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have traded barbs with such accuracy, they are unaccountably amused and engaged. Will this most inconvenient flirtation drive them apart-or, like silver buckles, are they a matched pair?
