Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Beast in the Jungle is a 1903 novel by Henry James, first published as part of the collection, The Better Sort. Almost universally considered one of James's best short stories, this story deals with appropriately universal themes: loneliness, destiny, love and death. The parable of John Marcher and his peculiar destiny has spoken to many readers who have speculated about the value and meaning of human life. John Marcher, the protagonist, reunites with May Bartram, a woman he met ten years earlier, who remembers his strange secret: Marcher is convinced that his life must be defined by a catastrophic or spectacular event, lurking as a "beast in the jungle". May decides to buy a house in London with the money she inherited from a great-aunt and spend her days with Marcher, curiously waiting for what fate holds.Marcher is a desperate fatalist, who believes he cannot marry so as not to subject his wife to her "spectacular destiny." He takes May to the theater and invites her to an occasional dinner, but does not allow him to approach him. While he sits idly by and lets the best years of his life pass, he knocks May down too, to the end where he discovers that the great misfortune of his life was to throw it away and ignore the love of a good woman, based on his absurd sense of feeling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James' novella begins at a luncheon that John Marcher has been invited to, at an extravagant house in London. On this October afternoon, he meets May Bartram. John muses that he has perhaps met her before, and as they converse he tries to place her face. He describes her as 'distinctly handsome' but much older than when they previously met. As May approaches him, she remembers John Marcher very well.Marcher feels guilty for not remembering May straight away, and blurts out that he remembers all about her from Rome eight years ago, when they met previously. Whilst May is happy that he remembers, she corrects him. It was in Naples they met, and ten years ago. She recalls the company they correct, and an incident at Pompeii where a thunderstorm forced them to take refuge. Marcher wishes that a romantic incident had happened between them in Naples, such as saving her from a capsized boat, so that there would be some substance and history to this meeting. They both silently acknowledge an attraction between the two and Marcher wonders why their reunion was not earlier.May tells Marcher she remembers a great secret he once told her in Sorrento. She asks him if he is still of that kind, yet Marcher still doesn't remember what he told her. She asks him 'Has it ever happened?' and Marcher pales, astonished that he revealed his secret to May. She is the only person in the world to know. Marcher asks how he revealed it to May, and she tells him what he said. From a very early age, Marcher had the 'sense of being kept for something rare and strange, possible prodigious and terrible' that would happen, and was constantly waiting for the event. May asks him if the event could be falling in love, and Marcher denies this; he has already been in love, and it has not been overwhelming enough for it to be the grand event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beast within the Jungle' become written by way of Henry James in 1903. It changed into firstly posted in a quantity of quick testimonies, named The Better Sort. James wrote many psychological tales, which include 'The Turn of the Screw', but this novella changed into taken into consideration the most a hit through its poignant subject of wasted existence. The novella follows the existence of Henry Marcher, or as a substitute the life he does not lead. He encounters May Bartram at a stylish London birthday party, and he realizes they met years before in Italy. She is the simplest man or woman that knows his grave secret, that he believes he's destined for a better motive. She has the same opinion to 'watch' his lifestyles with him, so that when the destined event does arise, both can understand it. They stay their lives together as pals, frequently talking of Marcher's destiny, that he refers to as 'The Beast inside the Jungle'. As they grow vintage, May is taken unwell with an extraordinary blood ailment. She grows weaker, and springs to understand that Marcher's fate become that he would waste his existence waiting for something to appear to him. May dies, and Marcher leaves London for the delights of tour, beginning in India. He returns, and visits May's grave. He sees a man inside the cemetery, whose face embodies the genuine definition of grief. Marcher comes to a final, tragic cognizance that to 'be nothing' was the ultimate failure, and that he had wasted his lifestyles.Henry James deals with topics of loneliness, loss, and large questions of existentialism. He questions why someone exists, and what their motive is in existence. Whilst Marcher waits for something excellent to happen to him, he wastes a lifestyle in which he may want to have made something appear. Whilst May's mind on any difficulty however Marcher are not blanketed in the narration, James explores loss in circumstances other than dying. Marcher grieves over the dying of his buddy, while May needed to live with a person who she probably loved, however could no longer allow himself to like her. This ambiguity is key to James' work, and his fashion continuously gives not anything away. Her moves and willpower suggest May's love for Marcher, but she never says it or suggests it definitely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Daisy Miller to Isabel Archer to Maisie, female characters dominate the work of Henry James and, often, critical discussion of James's work. Donatella Izzo shifts that discussion to a different, more revealing, plane in this original interpretation of James's short fiction. By redirecting criticism from a biographical emphasis to a focus on James's engagement with the issues of representation, Izzo shows how these short stories actually question and investigate the cultural and ideological practices that produced women, both in literature and in society.øPortraying the Lady brings to light the experimental quality and inherent consistency of stories that have received little critical attention, all of which revolve around ideas at the core of the cultural representation of femininity at the time. Izzo shows how James, by testing and stretching these ideas in his imagery and plots, exposed and exploded the perverse logic and the ultimate implications of such culturally shared versions of femininity, thus revealing their oppressive quality for women and laying bare literature's complicity in reproducing and circulating them. Exposing James's texts as sensitive registers of women's roles during the Victorian-Edwardian era, this book demonstrates that his texts make readers aware of how those stereotypes operated.øBlending literary, art, and feminist criticism with narratological analysis and postmodern theory, this groundbreaking work restores a formal awareness to James studies within the wider theoretical concerns of feminist, gender, and cultural critiques.
