Book excerpt: One of the most iconic incidents of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 was the charge of the Scots Greys, a crack cavalry regiment, into the heart of the French army. It was a moment of supreme daring and horse-riding skill, and Sergeant Ewart of the Greys succeeded in snatching one of Napoleon's coveted eagle standards. However it was also a military blunder. The Greys were quickly surrounded by enemy cavalry and cut to pieces. Of the regiment's 442 officers and men almost half, 198, were killed or injured. In the end the battle was won by the British and their allies and the eagle of the French 45th regiment is now on show in Edinburgh Castle. Iain Gale brings the bare outline of this legendary military exploit to life, giving the stories of the men involved and reconstructing the prelude, the aftermath, life in the Greys and the Battle of Waterloo as a whole. It is a uniquely exciting story of courage and military tactics in the heat of war.

A notable topographer, after the events that year he was commissioned to create a scale model of the Battle of Waterloo, for which he carried out extensive research, writing to officers in the allied forces present to obtain information. The subsequent correspondence amounted to the largest single collection of primary source material on the subject ever assembled. After he had completed his model, which is today on public display in the National Army Museum in London, he used the mass of information he had gathered to produce his History of the Waterloo Campaign, which was at the time the most detailed account of the operations of 1815 and is still considered a classic work on the subject.Sibornes history of Waterloo, the latest addition to Frontline's growing Napoleonic Library, is essential and gripping reading for all those who are interested in how this famous battle was fought and won.

Book Synopsis A Voice From Waterloo – A History Of The Battle Fought On The 18th June 1815 by : Sergeant-Major Edward Cotton
Download or read book A Voice From Waterloo – A History Of The Battle Fought On The 18th June 1815 written by Sergeant-Major Edward Cotton and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergeant-Major Cotton retired from the British army after long and hard service that saw him fight in numerous engagements and battles, none more memorable than his last, that of Waterloo. During the battle he was orderly to Maj-General Sir Hussey Vivian commanding 6th British cavalry brigade. Thankfully a new, less dangerous, and more lucrative trade opened up to him, that of battlefield guide. This trade still lives on in and around the battlefield, after many years Cotton knew the history of the campaign in minute detail, not however missing updating his knowledge with the books published from time to time such as Beamish’s History of the King’s German Legion and Siborne’s History. Having fought on and spent so much time in and around the battlefield steeped in the history of the epoch defining battle, Cotton stood uniquely placed to add to the blossoming Waterloo book trade and add his own incomparable story. His book is well researched, interesting and is the source for a great many of the anecdotes that have been lifted for other books on the subject. An excellent addition to the eye-witness accounts, flavoured with a lifetimes knowledge of the battlefield and the original source documents which he uses especially as indexes. Author – Sergeant-Major Edward Cotton, formerly of the 7th Hussars (1792?-1849)
