Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... is faith the basis of knowledge? 27 rails in their true position again. If those lines are straight ones, they will see two straight lines enclosing, or tending to enclose a space. The other illustration, of the same hypothesis, is just of the same kind. A world is supposed where little boys can never by any chance add two and two together, but what a jack in the box, in the shape of a unit, jumps into the answer and turns it into five. Assuming that none of them had wit enough to detect the trick, their sums would doubtless be always wrong: but not because they would conceive that two and two make five, but because the invariable association would be so strong, they could never think of two and two, but always of two, one, two. Like too many in this world, they would speak of one thing, meaning another. The next point of Mr. Mill's attack is Sir. W. Hamilton's doctrine, that the basis of all our knowledge is in belief. As his own doctrine is identically the same in substance with this, it is very difficult to make out the grounds of this attack, and the more so as he seems to think Sir W. Hamilton's teaching on this point so self-evidently absurd that to state it is to refute it; whereas to us it appears so obviously true as to be almost incapable of proof. He tells us that Sir W. Hamilton recognises, besides knowledge, a second source of intellectual conviction, called Page 57, chap. v. belief; and we are inclined to answer, of course he must. He then quotes from him these words: "We know what rests on reason, hut believe what rests on authority. But reason itself must rest at last on authority, for the original data of reason do not rest on reason, but are necessarily accepted by reason on the authority of what is beyond itself....

Book excerpt: An Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy, first published in 1865, with a second edition in the same year, and third and fourth editions in 1867 and 1872, has long been out of print. The Examination was, for his contemporaries, a most significant and popular work, presenting an extended treatment of some matters central to empiricism that found little space in Mill's Logic, the best known being his treatment of matter and mind from a psychological viewpoint. Appearing just before his successful parliamentary candidature, the Examination, with its deliberate and explicit onslaught on the intuitionists who were, in Mill's view, allied with anti-progressive political and religious forces, brought his beliefs into the public arena in a new way. Some of those who supported him politically found themselves viciously attacked because they had associated themselves with one who assailed settled religious beliefs. Other religionists who rejected many of Mill's attitudes strong expressed their admiration of the Examination because of its exposure to what they, with him, saw as dangerous theological and moral positions. Alan Ryan's analytical and historial introduction dwells on the most significant philosophical elements in the work, placing them in perspective and showing their relations to other aspects of Mill's thought. The textual introduction, by John M. Robson, examines the treatise in context of Mill's life in the 1860s, outlines its composition, and discusses, among other matters, the importance of the extensive revisions Mill made, mostly in response to critics. These revisions appear in full in the textual apparatus. Also provided are a bibliographical index, which gives a guide to the literature on the subject, and a collation of Mill's quotations, an analytical index, and appendices giving the reading of manuscript fragments and listing textual emendations.

Excerpt: ... sublimity and beauty, would require much study, and a wide survey of the subject, as well as of the speculations of other thinkers regarding it. The question has no direct connection with any other of those discussed in the present volume, and but a slight one with SirW. Hamilton's merits as a philosopher; since the brevity with which he treats it, gives ground for believing that he had not bestowed on it the amount of thought which would enable his opinion to claim the rank of a philosophic theory. CHAPTER XXVI. OF THE FREEDOM OF THE WILL. The last of the three classes of mental phenomena, that of Conation, in other words, of Desire and Will, is barely commenced upon in the last pages of Sir W. Hamilton's last lecture: whether it be that in the many years during which he taught the class, he never got beyond this point, or that his teaching in the concluding part of the course was purely oral, and has not been preserved. Nor has he, in any of his writings, treated ex professo of this subject; though doubtless he would have done so, had his health permitted him to complete the Dissertations on Reid. We consequently know little of what his sentiments were on any of the topics comprised in this branch of Pyschology, except the vexata qucestto of the Freedom of the Will; on which he could not help giving indications, in various parts of his works, both of his opinion and of the reasons on which he grounded it. The doctrine of Free-will was indeed so fundamental with him, that it may be regarded as the central idea of his system -- the determining cause of most of his philosophical opinions; and, in a peculiar manner, of the two which are most completely emanations from his own mind, the Law of the Conditioned, and his singular theory of...

After representing the veracity of the Creator as staked on the truth of the testimony of Consciousness, he is content to claim this argument as not amounting to proof, but only to a prima facie presumption. " Such a supposition " as that of a perfidious creator, "if gratuitous, is manifestly illegitimate." " The data of our original consciousness must, it is evident, in the first instance" (the italies are the author's), " be presumed true. It is only if proved false," which can only be by showing them to be inconsistent with one another, " that their authority can, in consequence of thnt proof, be, in the second instance, disallowed." " Ncganti incumbit probatio. Nature is not gratuitously to be assumed to work, not only in vain, but in counteraction of herself; our faculty of knowledge is not, without a ground, to be supposed an instrument of illusion." It is making a very humble claim for the veracity of the Creator, that it should be held valid merely as a presumption, in the absence of contrary evidence; that the Divine Being, like a prisoner at the bar, should be presumed innocent until proved guilty. Far, however, from intending this remark in any invidious sense against Sir Dissertations on Rcid, pp. 743-745., W. Hamilton, I regard it as one of his titles to honor, that he has not been afraid, as many men would have been, to subject a proposition surrounded by reverence to the same logical treatment as any other statement, and has not felt himself obliged, as a philosopher, to consider it from the first as final. My complaint is, that his logic is not sufficiently consistent. The divine veracity is entitled either to more or to less weight than he accords to it. He is bound by the laws of correct...
