Book excerpt: In late November 1864, the last Southern army east of the Mississippi that was still free to maneuver started out from northern Alabama on the Confederacy's last offensive. John Bell Hood and his Army of Tennessee had dreams of capturing Nashville and marching on to the Ohio River, but a small Union force under Hood's old West Point roommate stood between him and the state capital. In a desperate attempt to smash John Schofield's line at Franklin, Hood threw most of his men against the Union works, centered on the house of a family named Carter, and lost 30 percent of his attacking force in one afternoon, crippling his army and setting it up for a knockout blow at Nashville two weeks later. With firsthand accounts, letters and diary entries from the Carter House Archives, local historian James R. Knight paints a vivid picture of this gruesome conflict.

This debut novel is based on the true story of Carrie McGavock. During the Civil War's Battle of Franklin, a five-hour bloodbath with 9,200 casualties, McGavock's home was turned into a field hospital where four generals died. For 40 years she tended the private cemetery on her property where more than 1,000 were laid to rest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the Civil War, John M. Copley was a young boy from Dickson County, Tennessee. As a fifteen year old, he enlisted in Company B, 49th Tennessee Infantry in Charlotte, Tennessee. In this narrative, the reader is taken on a journey with Copley from his enlistment in 1861 through the end of the war. The narrative particularly focuses on Copley's participation in Hood's fateful 1864 Tennessee Campaign and his capture amidst the indescribably staggering carnage of the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee on November 30, 1864. Here, Copley as a soldier in Quarles' Brigade, Walthall's Division, was captured on the east side of the Columbia Turnpike near the famous Carter cotton gin. After an all-night march without rations, Copley and his fellow prisoners were taken to the Tennessee State Penitentiary where they awaited transportation by train to Louisville, Kentucky, and further transportation by rail to Chicago, Illinois. Here, at Camp Douglas, Copley, in vivid details, describes the wretched conditions and inhumane treatment he and others received as Confederate prisoners of war at Camp Douglas, Illinois.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 150 years after the end of the Civil War, scores of websites, articles, and organizations repeat claims that anywhere between 500 and 100,000 free and enslaved African Americans fought willingly as soldiers in the Confederate army. But as Kevin M. Levin argues in this carefully researched book, such claims would have shocked anyone who served in the army during the war itself. Levin explains that imprecise contemporary accounts, poorly understood primary-source material, and other misrepresentations helped fuel the rise of the black Confederate myth. Moreover, Levin shows that belief in the existence of black Confederate soldiers largely originated in the 1970s, a period that witnessed both a significant shift in how Americans remembered the Civil War and a rising backlash against African Americans' gains in civil rights and other realms. Levin also investigates the roles that African Americans actually performed in the Confederate army, including personal body servants and forced laborers. He demonstrates that regardless of the dangers these men faced in camp, on the march, and on the battlefield, their legal status remained unchanged. Even long after the guns fell silent, Confederate veterans and other writers remembered these men as former slaves and not as soldiers, an important reminder that how the war is remembered often runs counter to history.

Book excerpt: On November 30th, 1864, more than 40,000 Union and Confederate troops converged on Franklin, Tennessee, and fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Said one who saw it, "It was as if the devil had full possession of the earth." The events of that battle have passed not only into history, but into legend. Names like Tod Carter and John Bell Hood have found their ways into our poems and songs and folk tales. But what do these stories have to say to us today? Through the power of music and drama, this original work takes us back in time to witness the tragic struggle between father and son, between master and slave, between North and South. It's a tale of a broken family and a broken nation. But in the end, the story of the Battle of Franklin is about more than mere history--it's about the conflict in all of us, and our hope of restoration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring the longlost diary of Major General Patrick R. Cleburne Few American Civil War operations matched the controversy, intensity, and bloodshed of Confederate general John Bell Hood's illfated 1864 campaign against Union forces in Tennessee. In the firstever anthology on the subject, The Tennessee Campaign of 1864, edited by Steven E. Woodworth and Charles D. Grear, fourteen prominent historians and emerging scholars examine this operation, covering the battles of Allatoona, Spring Hill, and Franklin, as well as the decimation of Hood's army at Nashville. Essays focus on the high casualty rates among the Army of Tennessee's officer corps, the emotional and psychological impact of killing on the battlefield, and military figures such as generals Ulysses S. Grant and George H. Thomas, among others. The U.S. Colored Troops fought courageously in the Battle of Nashville, and the book explores their lasting impact on the African American community. The volume includes the transcript of Confederate major general Patrick R. Cleburne's revealing lost diary, which he kept until his death at Franklin, and provides a rare glimpse of civilian experiences in Franklin, Nashville, and the TransMississippi West. Two essays on Civil War battlefield preservation round out the collection. Canvassing both military and social history, this wellresearched volume offers new, illuminating perspectives while furthering longrunning debates on more familiar topics. These indepth essays provide an insider's view into one of the most brutal and notorious campaigns in Civil War history.
