Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basket, 1904, Vol. 2: The Journal of the Basket Fraternity, or Lovers of Indian Baskets and Other Good Things When does the age of invention begin? Could we but look back mto the far away dim ages of the past and watch the ascent of man from barbarism to civilization, how fascinating the occupation would be! Especially would our keenest interest be aroused at those epoch making periods in which some small but important discovery was on the verge of being made; when humanity was stumbling toward some great fact that, once seized, was to revolutionize future methods. \vho would not delight in such occupation, were he able to take with him into those dark days the light of present day knowledge? How did men invent fire? When, where and how (lid they first make any kind of clothing or house? Under what circumstances did they fashion the first weapon? When consciously grind corn? W'eave baskets? Make pottery? And the thousand and one other things that the little bronze women and men have handed down to us? I can conceive of few things as interesting as these in all human progress. How one's heart would beat in high expectation, knowing what was to come, when the naked aborigine first began to shape a bow and arrow; a throwing stick, a war club, a battle-axe! How many attempts there were before success crowned the first efforts; or, alas! How often the thing had to be given up until some future time, perhaps centuries later! How the primitive inventor, prompted by some feel ing, he knew not what, working solely for his own interest and profit. Without thought of financial reward, or the higher incitement of doing good to his fellows, blindly groped along, confident that he could suc ceed where success had never yet beckoned; assured that he could accomplish, where none as yet had accomplished! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basket, or the Journal of the Basket Fraternity or Lovers of Indian, 1903 Not far away from the foot of Yosemite falls is an Indian camp, and there I found three acorn caches. They are perched upon stilts and are of rude basket-work, an opening being left near the bottom through which the store can easily be reached. When I visited the Monos, I found there an acorn cache of differ ent construction. It was perched on stilts, as were the Yosemite ones, but these supported a rude platform of crossed logs, on which the cache proper rested. It is a pyramidal structure and was erected in front of the cottage door, so that it could be constantly watched. Like the Yosemite caches, it is of rudely twined twigs, but this, when full, was covered over with canvas so as to protect it completely from the weather. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a hundred years, outsiders enamored of the perceived strengths of American Indian cultures have appropriated and distorted elements of them for their own purposes—more often than not ignoring the impact of the process on the Indians themselves. This book contains eight original contributions that consider the selling of American Indian culture and how it affects the Native community. It goes beyond studies of “white shamanism” to focus on commercial ventures, challenging readers to reconsider how Indian cultures have been commercialized in the twentieth century. Some selections examine how Indians have been displayed to the public, beginning with a “living exhibit” of Cocopa Indians at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition and extending to contemporary stagings of Indian culture for tourists at Tillicum Village near Seattle. Other chapters range from the Cherokees to Puebloan peoples to Indians of Chiapas, Mexico, in an examination of the roles of both Indians and non-Indian reformers in marketing Native arts and crafts. These articles show that the commercialization and appropriation of American Indian cultures have been persistent practices of American society over the last century and constitute a form of cultural imperialism that could contribute to the destruction of American Indian culture and identity. They offer a means toward understanding this complex process and provide a new window on Indian-white interactions. CONTENTS Part I: Staging the Indian 1. The “Shy” Cocopa Go to the Fair, Nancy J. Parezo and John W. Troutman 2. Command Performances: Staging Native Americans at Tillicum Village, Katie N. Johnson and Tamara Underiner 3. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, Native artists on Olympic Peninsula, in what is now northwestern Washington, have created coiled and woven baskets using tree roots, bark, plant stems—and meticulous skill. From the Hands of a Weaver presents the traditional art of basket making among the peninsula’s Native peoples—particularly women—and describes the ancient, historic, and modern practices of the craft. Abundantly illustrated, this book also showcases the basketry collection of Olympic National Park. Baskets designed primarily for carrying and storing food have been central to the daily life of the Klallam, Twana, Quinault, Quileute, Hoh, and Makah cultures of Olympic Peninsula for thousands of years. The authors of the essays collected here, who include Native people as well as academics, explore the commonalities among these cultures and discuss their distinct weaving styles and techniques. Because basketry was interwoven with indigenous knowledge and culture throughout history, alterations in the art over time reflect important social changes. Using primary-source material as well as interviews, volume editor Jacilee Wray shows how Olympic Peninsula craftspeople participated in the development of the commercial basket industry, transforming useful but beautiful objects into creations appreciated as art. Other contributors address poaching of cedar and native grasses, and conservation efforts—contemporary challenges faced by basket makers. Appendices identify weavers and describe weaves attributed to each culture, making this an important reference for both scholars and collectors. Featuring more than 120 photographs and line drawings of historical and twentieth-century weavers and their baskets, this engaging book highlights the culture of distinct Native Northwest peoples while giving voice to individual artists, masters of a living art form.
