Download or read book Frans Hals written by Lelia Packer and published by Philip Wilson Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frans Hals is one of the greatest portrait painters of all time and, together with Rembrandt and Vermeer, is one of the most eminent Dutch seventeenth-century artists. Publishing to coincide with the The Wallace Collection exhibition of the same name, Frans Hals: The Male Portrait explores the artist's highly innovative approach to male portraiture in particular, from the beginning of his career in the 1610s until the end of his life in 1666. Through pose and virtuosic painterly technique, Hals completely revolutionised the male portrait into something entirely new and fresh, capturing and revealing his sitters' characters like no one else before him. The book includes the first in-depth study of Hals's great masterpiece, The Laughing Cavalier, from 1624. The extravagantly-dressed young man, confidently posed with his left arm akimbo in the extreme foreground of the picture and seemingly penetrating into the viewer's space, has been charming audiences for over a century. Richly illustrated, this book situates 'The Laughing Cavalier' within the artist's larger oeuvre and demonstrates how, at a relatively early point in his career, Hals was able to achieve his greatest masterpiece. Book excerpt: Madame Vuillard is a particular focus of the work produced during the initial decade of Edouard Vuillard's (1868 - 1940) career, the 1890s, when Vuillard was a member of the Nabis and forging an artistic identity as part of the Parisian avant-garde. During this period Vuillard and his widowed mother shared a series of modest rented apartments in central Paris in which the artist sustained a works-on-paper and (from 1897) amateur photographic practice out of his 'studio-bedroom', whilst in the dining room Madame Vuillard ran the corsetry business employing a handful of seamstresses including Vuillard's sister. In these apartments Vuillard and Madame Vuillard operated mutually supportive, parallel working practices, to the extent that Vuillard put his mother and the fabric of her atelier 'in the picture' whilst she posed for his pencil and camera or developed his photographs in the kitchen. Their Parisian co-habitation, and Vuillard's portrayal of his mother across a range of pictorial media, lasted until Madame Vuillard's death as an elderly woman in 1928.00Exhibition: The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham, UK (19.10.2018 - 20.01.2019).

Book Synopsis Still-life Paintings from the Netherlands, 1550-1720 by : Alan Chong
Download or read book Still-life Paintings from the Netherlands, 1550-1720 written by Alan Chong and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning book presents the very best still lifes produced in the Netherlands at the height of the genre, from the early beginnings in the 16th century, with Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer, to the late highlights in the 18th century, with Rachel Ruysch and Jan van Huysum. Despite the popularity and abundance of flower paintings in modern collections, the book includes a wide range of subjects and styles, from the simple to the complex, the charmingly small to the opulent and extravagant, and from flowers to hunting still lifes or objects in the corner of a painter's studio, along with an occasional trompe l'oeil. The visual delights of still-life painting have a strong historical context. Collectors and connoisseurs purchased them because of their realism, visual appeal, and relevance to their own lives. Poets praised the wonders of still-life paintings and evoked the power of painting to transcend the seasons and the passing of time. Contemporary observers lauded the expensive and elaborate objects often on display. The book therefore considers the visual achievement of the Netherlandish still life painters in the context of contemporary reactions to pictures, art theory, and issues of patronage. Numerous artists were tempted to try their hand at still life, drawn by a new and enchanting genre that allowed an artist to create independent worlds of inanimate objects on the flat surface of a picture -- imaginary realms that had an exceptional following among connoisseurs of the time. These images continue to work their magic on present-day art lovers.
