Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The female voice plays a more central role in Sufi ritual, especially in the singing of devotional poetry, than in almost any other area of Muslim culture. Female singers perform sufiana-kalam, or mystical poetry, at Sufi shrines and in concerts, folk festivals, and domestic life, while male singers assume the female voice when singing the myths of heroines in qawwali and sufiana-kalam. Yet, despite the centrality of the female voice in Sufi practice throughout South Asia and the Middle East, it has received little scholarly attention and is largely unknown in the West. This book presents the first in-depth study of the female voice in Sufi practice in the subcontinent of Pakistan and India. Shemeem Burney Abbas investigates the rituals at the Sufi shrines and looks at women's participation in them, as well as male performers' use of the female voice. The strengths of the book are her use of interviews with both prominent and grassroots female and male musicians and her transliteration of audio- and videotaped performances. Through them, she draws vital connections between oral culture and the written Sufi poetry that the musicians sing for their audiences. This research clarifies why the female voice is so important in Sufi practice and underscores the many contributions of women to Sufism and its rituals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Philosophy of M. N. Roy M.N. Roy may be best remembered as a philosopher of Radical Humanism. He propounded his new philosophy as a solution for the political, cultural and moral crisis which confronted mankind since 1945. His philosophy was in the nature of a 'Third Force' , as he believed that Communism, as it unfolded itself in the Soviet Union in the Stalinist era, was the greatest menace to human potentialities. He elaborated his schemes of 'Radical Democracy' and 'Humanist Politics' as integral parts of Radical Humanism to philosophically reconstruct a socially-cohesive state structure. The edifice of his philosophy rested on four laudable pillars viz. Rationalism, Humanism, Freedom and Materialism and spiritualism and no longer regarded man as a mere ' economic animal'. His philosophy asserted the supremacy of man in a socio-political system that transcended national boundaries. The study attempts a critical appraisal of Radical Humanism avoiding the adulation of a disciple and the approach of an uncharitable critic. It is an updated study, based on the author's three research dissertations besides other relevant literature. The first six chapters unfold the story of the evolution of Roy's philosophy and the seventh is a critical evaluation of the basic postulates of Radical Humanism. The study endeavors to get under the skin of real Roy, the visionary, who through his condemnation of orthodox Marxism as practiced in the Soviet Union had almost predicted its impending failure that actually happened in 1989. The study would be useful to academics, research scholars, general readers and post-graduate students of social sciences. The pro-Marxist and anti-Marxist intelligentsia should find the work objectively analytical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the pivotal decades around the turn of the century, American domestic life underwent dramatic alteration. From backstairs to front stairs, spaces and the activities within them were radically affected by shifts in the larger social and material environments. This volume, while taking account of architecture and decoration, moves us beyond the study of buildings to the study of behaviors, particularly the behaviors of those who peopled the middle-class, single-family, detached American home between 1880 and 1930." "The book's contributors study transformations in services (such as home utilities of power, heat, light, water, and waste removal) in servicing (for example, the impact of home appliances such as gas and electric ranges, washing machines, and refrigerators), and in serving (changes in domestic servants' duties, hours of work, racial and ethnic backgrounds)." "In blending intellectual and home history, these essays both examine and exemplify the perennial American enthusiasm for, as well as anxiety about, the meaning of modernity."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a projected three-volume work on the little-known South Indian folk cult of the goddess Draupadi and on the classical epic, the Mahabharata, that the cult brings to life in mythic, ritual, and dramatic forms. Draupadi, the chief heroine of the Sanskrit Mahabharata, takes on many unexpected guises in her Tamil cult, but her dimensions as a folk goddess remain rooted in a rich interpretive vision of the great epic. By examining the ways that the cult of Draupadi commingles traditions about the goddess and the epic, Alf Hiltebeitel shows the cult to be singularly representative of the inner tensions and working dynamics of popular devotional Hinduism.

Book excerpt: Electrical Engineering Photonic Switching Technology Systems and Networks Find out how today’s photonic switching technologies can provide a functional advantage in handling the ever-increasing data rates and bandwidth requirements placed on telecommunication components, systems, and networks with this self-contained, tutorial guide. Based on systems currently in use, Photonic Switching Technology: Systems and Networks will equip practitioners and researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the functionality and versatility provided by photonics technologies used in all-optical networks weighed against their costs and limitations. The authors feature special coverage of state-of-the-art pilot systems that use photonic switching and multiwavelength techniques, such as Monet, Lambdanet, Cobra, and Starnet. These systems not only demonstrate the feasibility of optical systems, but also the implications of system integration, supporting technologies, and system economics. Photonic Switching Technology brings you a wealth of information on Photonic switches based on the electro-optic effect, switches based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA), and optical memory switches Free space optical switching Wavelength division switching, including wavelength routing, wavelength conversion, and WDM packet switching Optical crossconnects
