Book excerpt: This volume provides more than just a glimpse into Japanese bamboo basket making, it delves into the intriguing life of Higashi Takesonosai, one of Japan's most accomplished artists. Throughout the span of his life and career, Takesonosai's works were influenced by a variety of people such as his family, friends, mentors, and artists. It is these influences that shape Takesonosai's personality and contributes to his present day success. With a fervor for artwork and painting, but limited resources and opportunity to pursue this passion, Takesonosai resorted to bamboo basket making, a job that would later turn into a lifelong career. Takesonosai's underlying love of art is used as a central theme for the construction of his bamboo baskets. Included in this book are color photographs of Takesonosai's masterpieces, which clearly exhibit his creative ingenuity. Each individually hand crafted basket produced by Takesonosai is a piece of art requiring long hours of labor, skill, and originality. Takesonosai's extraordinary talent and adroit ability to create such artwork transforms this hobby into a much-admired and highly praised profession.

Book excerpt: Japanese bamboo sculptures and baskets are celebrated with stunning detail in this art collection. Bamboo is an exacting medium for the artist. A true artist of bamboo "bears full responsibility for every step of the creative process," according to Fujinuma Noboru, one of the artists represented in this publication. "Without splitting the bamboo and working through each of the various steps oneself," he explains, "one cannot get the 'feel' of each individual bamboo culm and know for what kind of piece it will be best suited. And there are no shortcuts in bamboo—there is no way to mechanize the process." In this book accompanying the exhibition Masters of Bamboo: Japanese Baskets and Sculpture from the Cotsen Collection, exhibition curator Melissa Rinne, in consultation with bamboo specialist Koichiro Okada, provides an overview of this intriguing art form. She also traces the network of master-disciple influences that constitute the major lineages-or lines of artistic transmission-in bamboo art, from nineteenth-century artists through those active today. These lineages have never before been described in a systematic way, and they provide a means of comprehending Japanese bamboo work from a global perspective.

Book excerpt: Japanese bamboo baskets have a very long history. Until the 16th century, they were primarily utilitarian and rustic items. Those with an aesthetic value were imported from China. Mirror of the Confucian values, they displayed perfectly symmetrical shapes and a surprisingly regular weaving. The turning point came from the codification of the tea ceremony in the 16th century. Due to their extreme refinement, the Japanese bamboo vases ( hanakago ), containing floral arrangements (ikebana) are elevated to the rank of works of art. The masters of the golden era, founders of this art, constituted in dynasties, established a special relationship between the artist and the patron. But one artist will be particularly honored, Iizuka Rokansai (1890-1958), called the "Picasso of the basket" with his forty pieces. The post-war period is crucial in the diffusion of this art across the world, especially in the USA, in private collections or museums. This resulted in the use of new shapes by contemporary artists, but also in attempts at blending bamboo with new materials. The main question is then about the artistic status of contemporary or modern artists whose work requires great technical and artisanal skills. Inspired by classical formalism, which vocabulary was set up thoroughly by Iizuka Rokansai, the baskets of young contemporary artists are now becoming sculptures. Devoid of any function, they open up a unique artistic field.
