Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a careful and innovative consideration of a remarkable and enduring Native American ritual. Zogry reflects deeply, critically, and sensibly on an amazing array of issues of theoretical interest to the study of religion, culture, game, ritual, secrecy, colonial contact, and even the impact of tourism on culture. An important and informative work."---SAM D. GILL, University of Colorado at Boulder "Zogry presents a very well researched, ethically grounded, and theoretically informed study of Anetso, the Cherokee ball game, which will instruct students of Native American religions, Cherokee traditions and history, and the anthropology of sport. A valuable book that is based on impressive archival and ethnographic work."---Michael d. Mcnally, Carleton College Anetso, a centuries-old Cherokee ball game still played today, is a vigorous, sometimes violent activity that rewards speed, strength, and agility. At the same time, it is the focus of several linked ritual activities. Is it a sport? Is it a religious ritual? Could it possibly be both? Why has it lasted so long, surviving through centuries of upheaval and change? Based on his work in the field and in the archives, Michael J. Zogry argues that members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation continue to perform selected aspects of their cultural identity by engaging in anetso, itself the hub of an extended ceremonial complex, or cycle. Historically, this complex has featured virtually every activity that Cherokee people and non-Cherokee observers have identified as elemental to Cherokee "religion" or "ritual," However, interpreted as "game" within a broader framing of "religion," anetso simultaneously resists and problematizes such classifications. A precursor to lacrosse, anetso appears in all manner of Cherokee cultural narratives and has figured prominently in the written accounts of non-Cherokee observers for almost three hundred years. The anetso ceremonial complex incorporates a variety of activities that, taken together, complicate standard scholarly distinctions such as game versus ritual, public display versus private performance, and tradition versus innovation. Thus examination of this Cherokee bail game and the ceremonial complex that it anchors provides a striking opportunity for a rethinking of the understanding of ritual and performance as well as their relationship to cultural identity. Zogry draws on extensive cultural consultation with members of the Cherokee community in western North Carolina, undertaken with the approval of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, as well as thorough archival research, to offer a sharp reappraisal of scholarly discourse on the Cherokee religious system, with particular focus on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation.

Book excerpt: Cherokee people like all other Native American Indian tribes possess a huge oral history. Before the time of written words, the history, customs and skills of a tribe were passed down through word-of-mouth and storytelling. Today, it is still an important part of Cherokee life. Elder tribe members use stories to teach morals and culture to children and others while keeping a rich history alive. Storytelling also allows people to get to know one another. The stories of the Cherokee people make us unique, but stories will be known only as long as they are told. When someone ceases to tell a story, part of our cultural knowledge is gone. Under old traditional law, these tales or stories were only told to fellow Cherokee or other Indian People. Many of these stories contained within this book were recorded by James Mooney who lived with the Cherokee in the 1800's. These include animal stories, creation myths, legends, and ghost stories, as well as, historical events such as the Trail of Tears. These stories have been passed from generation to generation and as with tradition, and have been left as much intact as possible. I learned many of these stories from my grandfather as a child, just as other Cherokee children did. As with tradition, these stories are now shared with you, to go forward and share with a future generation. In this collection, you will find such stories as Origin of the Pleiades and the Pine, What Became Of the Rabbit, The Rabbit Dines the Bear, The Rabbit Escapes from the Wolves, The Rattlesnake's Vengeance, The Red Man and the Uktena, The Eagle's Revenge, Agan-uni'tsi's Search for the Uktena, The Hunter and Selu, The Snake Boy, The First Fire, The Lost Cherokee and many, many more.

Book excerpt: This one-stop cross-cultural selective guide to recent retellings of myths and hero tales for children and young adults will enable teachers and library media specialists to select comparative myths and tales from various, mostly non-European cultures. The focus is on stories from Native America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, and Oceania. The Guide contains extensively annotated entries on 189 books of retellings of myths and hero tales, both ancient and modern, from around the world published between 1985 and 1996. Represented are 1,455 stories suitable for use with young people from mid-elementary through high school. The entries, arranged alphabetically by writer, contain complete bibliographic data, age and grade levels, and evaluative annotations. Seven indexes—title, author, illustrator, culture, story type, name, and grade level—make searching easy. The story type index will enable teachers to select comparative myths and tales from different cultures on more than 50 types of myths and hero tales. Among the many myth types cited are origin of human beings and the world, comparative social customs and rituals, natural and heavenly phenomena, animal appearance and behavior, searches and quests, and tricksters. Among the hero tale types are fools and buffoons, kings and queens, warriors, monster slayers, important female figures, magicians, voyagers and adventurers, and spiritual leaders. The Guide concludes with a bibliography of retellings published earlier that have come to be considered standard works.
