Book Synopsis Guide to Spain Portugal by : Henry O'Shea
Download or read book Guide to Spain Portugal written by Henry O'Shea and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Spain Portugal: Including the Balearic Islands Although it is not yet four years since the Seventh Edition was issued, O'Shea's Guide to Spain and Portugal has once more been thoroughly revised upon the spot, and from the latest official information. Beyond the extensive and necessary corrections thus made, the chief alterations which I have introduced consist (1) in a recasting of considerable portions of the Introduction, such as the chapters upon Language and Literature, in order to make these short, and it is to be hoped useful, essays really worthy of their purpose, and of a high-class handbook; (2) in the careful revision of the lists of books of reference, and the inclusion therein of the chief literary and scientific works of the last ten years. I have again to record my belief that the Peninsula has a great future before it, not only politically and commercially, but also as one of the favoured European playgrounds. The face of the country is rapidly changing, with the spread of its railway system, its commercial development, and the beneficent influence of a stable Government; and nearly every place or object of interest can now be visited with ease, and in security and comfort. One outcome of this constant change in the direction of improvement is an extreme difficulty in keeping a Guide Book accurate up to date in such details as hotels, routes, conveyances, etc.; and I shall therefore value all information which travellers may be pleased to address to me, under cover to the publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mediterranean Moods, Footnotes of Travel in the Islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Sardinia Every traveller, consciously or unconsciously, is in search of certain exalted moments. By the traveller I understand one who is half an exile, kinsman to the Wandering Jew. Not the mere holiday maker. His mood is too undiscriminating. The bare fact of his idleness and the dislocation of his customary habits are a perpetual and delightful miracle. He is the skilful alchemist who can transmute gold into pleasure at will. He carries with him an exhaustless fund of spirits, but no standard of criticism. Every town is a sort of exhibition provided with attractive side-shows. He finds friends stationed everywhere to receive him. He recognises them by the legends on their caps. They come to meet him at the train; they await him at the showplace; if he but glance at them they smile, bend their backs, smooth their hands. Every country is a museum which painstaking people have catalogued for him, recording the result of their research in red-bound volumes suited to his pocket. Providence plays the role of a kind of impresario, achieving telling effects in Alpine or African scenery, filling the stage with picturesque choruses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fortunate Isles: Life and Travel in Majorca, Minorca and Iviza When the Boy and I had planned our journey to the Balearic Isles (the Man never plans), our imaginings always began as we embarked at Barcelona harbour on the Majorcan steamer that was to carry us to the islands of our desire. So when we had strolled to where the Rambla ends amid the palm-trees of the port, it seemed like the materializing of a dream to see the steamer Balear lying there, right under the great column of Columbus, with her bow pointing seawards.
