Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Awakening of the East The trans-siberian Railway has been greatly hindered by the Chinese rising in Manchuria. For practical purposes it can hardly be said to exist beyond Irkutsk, for although the line is completed as far as Stretensk, there is yet a lack of rolling-stock, and the dreary voyage by steamers of different draughts down the Shilka and Amur rivers to Khabarofsk, where the line to Vladivostok is met, deprives the railway route as yet of all its advantages over the sea-route from Europe. The last passengers who came from Vladivostok to Moscow before the interruption of traffic spent thirty-eight days on the journey, and it will have been noticed that by far the larger part of the reinforcing Russian troops, horses, and materziel were despatched to the Far East from Odessa, no small portion in British transports. The Manchurian section of the great railway has from the first, even in times of peace, presented great difficulties of climate, lack of supplies, and hostility of the native population, but now a considerable part of the work executed has been destroyed, the Russian forces have not yet succeeded in clearing the country of the Chinese troops and irregulars, a large garrison will have to be maintained to protect the works in hand, and a long delay over the original estimated dates of completion is inevitable. All this, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Awakening of Asia This book has been held up by the Censor for more than two years. From my own standpoint, this has turned out to be an advantage, so far as its prospect of usefulness goes. Now, more than ever before, Europeans and Americans are prepared to consider the relations of the white races to Asiatics as demanding very careful study. That Japan should be fully repre sented at the Peace Conference, as one of the Great Powers of the world, and that China and India, with their joint population of some people, should claim the right to make themselves heard at the same gathering of the nations, are events which cannot be overlooked. Asia, indeed, seems destined to play a still greater part in the future than she has played in the past. It is important, therefore, for the English-speaking peoples, to whom I primarily address myself, that they should recognise this at once. Self determination and justice for all races cannot be confined to Europe or America. When first I began my serious studies of the influence of the white man on the Far East, I was of the opinion that this influence had been almost wholly beneficial. The fact that close relations of my own had been connected with Eastern affairs for several generations naturally strengthened me in this view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Awakening After her graduation and introduction into society, she became a brilliant star, which was her greatest ambition, and the ambition of her parents also. She was a very beautiful woman, and knew well how to use her charms to an advantage when she thought it worth her while. She started out in life to live for self only, we find her living for it now. It never occurred to her that her husband and sweet little girl should have a portion of her love and attention. There was nothing so dear to her or pleased her better than to be spoken of as being the most beautiful and well dressed lady at every society function where she was present. How she met and married Judge Wiley will be explained in one of the following chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I did not suffer; on the contrary I felt in the best of health; and then, as the dismal thoughts of the weeks of suffering I had undergone came back to me, I concluded I must be dreaming. Well, thought I, if by dreaming I can still the pain which tortured me, let me but dream forever! I lay quietly on my back, and began to look around the room. At my left was a large window looking out upon a park filled with beautiful large maples, their branches moving softly with the gentle breeze across the room a large fireplace met my gaze, with a mantel surmounting, on which there was a clock and some vases, and I distinctly heard the clock ticking. A most marvellous dream, thought I. As my eyes wandered about, now stopping to admire some pictures, now examining curi ously some article of furniture wholly new to me, a little door above the dial of the clock opened, a miniature head was pushed out, and a soft, delightful voice said pleasantly, It is now ten o'clock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rising Temper of the East, Sounding the Human Note in the World-Wide, Cry for Land and Liberty I have called this book The Rising Temper of the East because in it I have attempted to show not only the awakening of a billion backward peoples of the Old World but to sound a note of warning to the white Christian East. I have tried to tell the human story of the rising winds of new freedom, the coming of new ideas, the birth of new hopes, the whole renaissance of the ancient East. The white man's domination of the billion men of the East by force must cease. No longer can our culture and our civilization be carried to backward, ancient peoples on the vehicle of force. If there is a "white man's burden" it must in the future be borne on other shoulders than those that carry bayonets. Everywhere throughout the East there are danger signals flashing their warning to the conquering West. The ruling, the domineering, the looting, must cease. If the West were wise it would shift its course now while there is still time. If it blindly stumbles on, ignoring these danger signals, the day will soon come when the work and the profits of four hundred years will be swept away. For my own part I feel that so long as my reminiscences are "Stained with the variation of each soil" I shall be as pleased with them as with a pair of old shooting-boots, the nails of which, hammered in by some sturdy peasant of the Oberland whose door opens into meadows lush with globe-flower and campanula, have been worn away in the wildernesses of the back of beyond, the insteps purple with the indurated mud of mangrove swamps, the toes cracked with the attrition of the desert sand, the gaping seams and sutures shot with Himalayan mica, and the uppers charactered over from sole to ankle with the sharp camelthorn and the gorse of Devonshire moors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Awakening: A Study The olive skin faintly aglow, the velvet darkness of eyes that brooded upon sky and sea, were framed in a gold bordered sari, pale as an evening primrose, that half veiled without hiding the sweet seriousness of the girl's face. These, and her aloofness from the chattering tea-drinkers in the verandah below, conspired to give her an alluring air of unreality; and her purely Eastern stillness, in that temple of unrest, a Riviera hotel, enhanced the effect. Sinclair had leisure to approve the delicate curves of brow and cheek and nostril, the slender symmetry of the hand and arm resting on the balcony's ledge, the classic poise and outline of the veiled head. For all the gravity of her eyes, a hint of passion in the ripe lower lip, and of wilfulness in the round chin that matched it, promised just those varying elements of light and shade that would some day make her all a woman. At present she seemed little more than a sheaf of possibilities; a bud half Open awaiting the strong kiss of the sun. And behind her loomed the wide, white facade of the Hotel du Cap, un compromisingly square and solid; as it were the House of Life with its hundred rooms, and hundred complications, old as the sea, yet eternally changeful as the myriad waves thereof. Sinclair had dallied with love in more than one form, even as he had dallied with art and life; reaching the core of none. But art had lured him farthest and he saw this child of an alien race rather as a possible picture than a pos sible woman. Her absorption tempted him: so also did the sketch-book on his knee. He Opened it, and paused - looking upward. The thrill of inspiration was on him: a visitation too rare, too imperative to be ignored. There was also the insidious joy of yielding to temptation. Out came the pencil, and he went swiftly and skilfully to work. N atur ally she moved the moment stillness was essential. But it was only to set an open book upon the ledge and give him an instant's fuller vision of her face. Then, her cheek lightly resting on her hand, she fell into a pose more lasting, more enchanting than before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. In many respects they differ from those of the West, but, for this very reason, are highly interesting and instructive. To the Occident we look for Law, to the Orient for Light. Believing that this Light is best expressed rhythmically, that poetry is the most fitting medium for rendering those lofty Ideals of Reason with which alone we are concerned, I have in each case given a metrical rendering of the original. The diction of the idealist, whether in India or Greece, is not that of the crowd; it is one full of types and tropes, is essentially poetic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the East, Vol. 2 of 2 When our siesta was over, and when the sun had already set behind our lofty horizon, we mounted and proceeded towards Rapsana. After skirting the lake, we turned to the left, over a low hill, and descended into a deep glen, or "lac," opening to the sea. We could not see it; but a sea-scented breeze came winding through the hills. Here we came upon a party of villagers, who had just killed a wild boar. It was with great difficulty that we got away from them, for they insisted on our spending the night at their village, and ran over the bill of fare to which we should be treated.
