American teenager David Matthews has more to deal with than the average exchange student living in Japan—a lot more. In Samurai Awakening, David woke one morning to discover that he'd been empowered and possessed by the tiger god Kou. Now a Jitsugen Samurai in Revenge of the Akuma Clan and able to take on Kou's form, David must use his new abilities to protect Japan from the terrifying evil creeping across the land—and waiting for him to fail. As his relationships, especially with Rie his host sister, grow uncertain, he must forge deeper connections with Kou, the tiger god that resides with him, and form new alliances if he hopes to hold back the return of Japan's ancient enemies. It is up to David to stop the powerful and vengeful Akuma Clan—and time is running out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using data collected in fieldwork and surveys, this book examines China’s clan system and local clan communities in rural Anhui, covering events in two periods: the imperial pattern as seen in the first half of the twentieth century and changes since 1949. Revealed by this research, during the late Qing and the Republic Era, a local clan in the investigated areas was run as a highly autonomous community with a strong religious focus, which challenges the corporate model raised by Maurice Freedman. Through examining single-surname villages, citang constructions, and updating of genealogies, local clans in Huadong, Huizhou and the lower Yangtze River plains in particular, developed earlier than those in the Pearl River Delta Region. Taking a cross-disciplinary viewpoint, this book analyses changes in local clan communities and clan culture as brought by the Chinese Revolution, Mao’s political campaigns, and Deng’s reforms. Starting with the late 1990s, a large migration from villages to cities has rapidly altered rural China. This geographic mobility would undermine the common residence that serves as part of a clan’s foundation. Under such situation, what transformations have taken place or will affect China’s clan system? Will the system continue to revitalise or die out? Local Clan Communities in Rural China reports these events/transformations and attempts to answer these questions. Placing a special emphasis on issues that have been overlooked by prior studies, this book brings to light many new facts and interpretations and provides a valuable reference to scholars in fields of sociology, anthropology, history, economics, cultural studies, urban studies, and population studies.

Book excerpt: Robin Ridington and Dennis Hastings ingeniously adopt the conventions of Omaha oral narratives to tell the story and convey the significance of the Sacred Pole. Portions of classic anthropological texts (particularly Fletcher and La Flesche?s The Omaha Tribe), Omaha narratives, and other historical and contemporary accounts are repeated?each time in a different, more enlightening context?in a circle of stories seamlessly woven around Umon?hon?ti. The result is an innovative account that effortlessly glides between past and present. This unique blend of Omaha poetics, ethnography, and ethnohistory is a significant contribution to our understanding of the religious life of Native Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age 4, Lauren Chisholm declared she had the ‘most gorgeoustist, sparkly, friend in all the worlds, whose voice sounds like singing’. Her parents thought about taking her to a psychiatrist, in the hopes that Lauren would forget all about her ‘favouritemost friend’. But they knew who she was talking about... and what she was talking about: an angel. Their only course of action was to tell Lauren that some things were pretend and most definitely… not real. They knew it was wrong, but they were unsure of how else to help her. Lauren was an earthbound human, and to fantasise about a world she would not be allowed to enter was just not acceptable to them. Now, pandemonium is about to erupt. Up in The Heavens, Ambriel, the angel of communications, is worried. He has discovered an anomaly in his Book of Mistdreamers; the Chisholm family had managed to slip through without registering years ago and are now in great danger. There is a Traitor at work. Meanwhile, Forcas, the angel of invisibility and a member of The Infidelibus, (a band of angels sworn to protect Mistdreamers), has been chosen to make contact with Lauren to help her realise her Mistdreaming potential. Join her as she ventures into Mistdreaming, and explores the realms between Heaven and Hell. Laugh at her antics. Fear for her life, when she encounters the Traitor. And share in her joy at finding her one, true love... The Park Family: Lauren – The Awakening is a spellbinding novel that will appeal to fantasy readers. Author Lisanne takes inspiration from Harper Lee, J.R.R. Tolkien and Diana Gabaldon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when North American Mennonite Christians arrive in Islamic Somalia? The answer, according to Peter Sensenig, is that something new emerges: a peace clan. From the first schools and medical work in the 1950s up to the educational partnerships of the present day, Somalis and Mennonites formed a surprising friendship that defied conventional labels. Peace Clan is the story of two deeply traditional communities as they encounter change. How can Somalis apply the profound peacemaking resources of their culture and faith in a society fragmented by violence? And how can modernizing Mennonites make sense of their peace convictions in the context of civil war and military intervention? In struggling with these questions over the course of six decades, Somalis and Mennonites held a mirror up to one another. The author shows how the common quest to transform enmity brings out the best in both communities, and suggests what a fruitful partnership might look like in the present challenges. Students, academics, and lay readers alike will find on these pages a compelling invitation to join the peace clan.

Clan Novel Toreador is the first in this series. Among the thirteen clans of the Kindred—vampires who secretly manipulate human events—the Toreador are dismissed as hedonists. They accept this as the price of preserving that which is beautiful...particularly themselves. Yet not all Toreador are so easily ignored. the cunning Victoria Ash makes Atlanta's most famous art museum her venue for plots that could win her control of the city. And though the sculptor Leopold desires only solitude to perfect his art, he is forced to enter the dangerous world of his kin to discover the truth of his past—with consequences that will change Kindred society forever.

Book excerpt: THE AMAZING GARDEN OF BLUE LOTUS Surviving the darkest times of Tibetan history, in the midst of extreme religious persecution, he lived the life of a practitioner whose spiritual realizations were reflected through his actions. Forbearing every hardship and torture with equanimity, he was a physician by virtue who cured hundreds, but with meagre substances that one might refuse ghastly if it were in today’s time. Besides being a Lama that sees beyond time and across dimensions, he was the Vajramaster who trained twentysix classes of Six Union Vajra practitioners, each of whom assumed a greater role in the spread of the dharma than the other. Gyala Pema Namgyal’s life will fascinate any reader by the means he worked for the welfare of countless beings. The Land of Golok was indeed fortunate to have been the womb for this noble master at that turbulent time. As a novice translator, a lazy one at that, I found only joy and a rush of blessings in the mornings as I began the attempt to make his life reachable for the English readers. Because there were no shortages of miracles in the life of this benevolent teacher, I hope he will continue to inspire more lives as much as he did while he lived.

Book excerpt: I shall tell you a story—it is the tale of a journey. Gather round, young and old, for the moving and amusing tale of Adam, a most curious and unique little whistle-pig. Adam is different from the rest of his group from birth. Those in the Whistle-pig Clan do not think deep thoughts. They do not laugh. They cannot even smile! But Adam does these things. Adam plays when the others do not. He explores where the others do not. He protects when others will not. And for all his differences, he is shunned from the group and finds a home, alone, a short distance away from where he grew up. Adam is mostly pleased with his solitary life, but he can't help longing for someone to share his thoughts with. A prisoner in his own mind, he sometimes finds it easy to make a bad choice. But, as he is different than any other whistle-pig, he begins to feel emotions that whistle-pigs and others in the animal kingdom do not feel. These emotions leave him conflicted, until the arrival of Agnus, a strangely kind two leg. A story of redemption and hope, The Awakening of Adam is an allegorical treasure that will inspire your heart and touch your spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddha left his home and family and enjoined his followers to go forth and "become homeless." With a traditionally celibate clergy, Asian Buddhism is often regarded as a world-renouncing religion inimical to family life. This edited volume counters this view, showing how Asian Buddhists in a wide range of historical and geographical circumstances relate as kin to their biological families and to the religious families they join. Using contemporary and historical case studies as well as textual examples, contributors explore how Asian Buddhists invoke family ties in the intentional communities they create and use them to establish religious authority and guard religious privilege. The language of family and lineage emerges as central to a variety of South and East Asian Buddhist contexts. With an interdisciplinary, Pan-Asian approach, Family in Buddhism challenges received wisdom in religious studies and offers new ways to think about family and society.
