Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is at present no universally accepted source giving definitions in English of the principal terms used in Production Control and in closely related areas. Most of the dictionaries and glossaries which do exist in this field fail to cover the full range of ideas which need to be considered during an intelligent discussion of the subject. Definitions given in different sources for Production Control terms differ not only in wording, but also in many cases in the concepts which they cover. The IFIP Glossary is intended to meet this perceived need, the immediate audience for the book being IFIP WG 5.7, the working group concerned with the automation of Production Management and other related subjects. The Glossary is organised in the following way: - The subject field was classified into sub-fields by Management function. - Each of these sub-fields was analysed to discover the main concepts with which it is concerned. - Terms were selected for each concept, using as far as possible terms which are already in common use. - Definitions were selected or written for each term. This approach of starting with subject classification is believed to be new in the field of production.Care has been taken to check the Glossary with the APICS dictionary (USA), and with British standards. Notes are included in Part 2 to explain the reasons for selecting a particular meaning for a term, in those cases where there are wide differences in the meanings chosen by different sources. Some consensus about the meaning of words is essential for communication. On the other hand, there is a danger that if the accepted framework of meanings is too rigid, if may hinder the future development of the discipline. It is hoped that a reasonable balance has been found between these conflicting influences. The Glossary should be useful not only to WG 5.7 members, but also to Engineers and Academics in all countries where a knowledge of English is important to industrial development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automation has been employed for many years to provide a multitude of reasonably priced products for the American consumer. However, it has become evident that its real character as a manufacturing systems approach needs to be examined carefully for a better appreciation. In this book the purpose is to examine automation technology in its broadest sense and develop not only an understanding but also present some of the engineering and organization "know-how" by which manufacturing management can more effectively utilize automation to improve pro ductivity and combat rising costs in the years ahead. Fundamentally, this book is addressed to manufacturing managers, and the material presented in a manner that will provide the knowledge for assuring success in automating. In addition, it highlights the man ufacturing research and long-range planning that will be required for creating the new manufacturing technology so necessary for assuring success in future automation efforts. One of the important facts emphasized in this text is that automation is not merely robotics ar another kind or type of machinery. To effect true productivity improvement requires a fresh look at the entire pro duction process or facility-as a completely integrated system. With the developments of the past few years, rapid advances in the technology and the "tools of automation" have brought this imperative goal within the reasonable grasp of manufacturing management in almost every segment of industry. However, to utilize this progress, it is necessary to acquire a working understanding of all facets of automation.

The field's only single-volume reference, it's uniquely convenient and uniquely affordable. With nearly 1,500 well-organized definitions, it can help students quickly map all areas of operations and supply chain management, and prepare for case discussions, exams, and job interviews. For instructors, it serves as an invaluable desk reference and teaching aid that goes far beyond typical dictionaries. For working managers, it offers a shared language, with insights for improving any process and supporting any training program. It thoroughly covers: accounting, customer service, distribution, e-business, economics, finance, forecasting, human resources, industrial engineering, industrial relations, inventory management, healthcare management, Lean Sigma/Six Sigma, lean thinking, logistics, maintenance engineering, management information systems, marketing/sales, new product development, operations research, organizational behavior/management, personal time management, production planning and control, purchasing, reliability engineering, quality management, service management, simulation, statistics, strategic management, systems engineering, supply and supply chain management, theory of constraints, transportation, and warehousing. Multiple figures, graphs, equations, Excel formulas, VBA scripts, and references support both learning and application. "... this work should be useful as a desk reference for operations management faculty and practitioners, and it would be highly valuable for undergraduates learning the basic concepts and terminology of the field." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary contains 13,000 terms with more than 4,000 cross-references used in the following fields: automation, technology of management and regulation, computing machine and data processing, computer control, automation of industry, laser technology, theory of information and theory of signals, theory of algorithms and programming, philosophical bases of cybernetics, cybernetics and mathematical methods.Automation pertains to the theory, art, or technique of making a machine, a process or a device more fully automatic. Computers and information processing equipment play a large role in the automation of a process because of the inherent ability of a computer to develop decision that will, in effect, control or govern the process from the information received by the computer concerning the status of the process. Thus automation pertains to both the theory, and techniques of using automatic systems in industrial applications and the processes of investigation, design and conversion to automatic methods. Automatic control, automatic materials handling, automatic testing, automatic packaging, for continuous as well as batch processing, are all considered parts of the overall or completely automatic process. The Dictionary consists of two parts, Basic Table and Indexes. In the first part the English terms are listed alphabetically, numbered consecutively and followed by its German, French and Russian equivalents. English synonyms appear as cross-references to the main entries in their proper alphabetical order. The second part of the Dictionary, the Indexes, contains separate alphabetical indexes of the German, French and Russian terms. The reference number(s) with each term stands for the number of the English term(s) in the basic table.Elsevier's Dictionary of Automatic Technics will be a valuable tool for specialists, scientists, students and everyone who takes interest in the problems of investigation devoted to the design, development, and applications of methods and techniques for rendering a process of group of machines self-actuating, self-moving, or self-controlling.
