Book Synopsis The Writings of Theobald Wolfe Tone, 1763-98: Tone's career in Ireland to June 1795 by : Theobald Wolfe Tone
Download or read book The Writings of Theobald Wolfe Tone, 1763-98: Tone's career in Ireland to June 1795 written by Theobald Wolfe Tone and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1998 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the writings of Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763-98), barrister, United Irishman, agent of the Catholic Committee and later an officer in the French revolutionary army, is intended to comprehend all his writings and largely to supersede the two-volume Life of Theobald Wolfe Tone ... written by himself that was edited by his son, William, and published at Washington in 1826. It consists mainly of Tone's correspondence, diaries, autobiography, pamphlets, public addresses and miscellaneous memoranda (both personal and public); it is based on the original MSS if extant or on the most reliable printed sources. Tone's participation in Irish politics in the early 1790s and his presence on the periphery of the ruling circle in revolutionary France from February 1796 to September 1798 would be sufficient to make his writings a major historical source. The literary quality of his letters, diaries and autobiography enhances their importance. The unique quality of Tone's writings isthat they are the production of a gifted and convivial young Irishman who moved widely in intellectual and political circles. This volume _ Tone's career in Ireland to June 1975 _ is the first of three. It is to be followed shortly by volumes II _ ('America, France and Bantry Bay, August 1795 to December 1796') and III ('France, the Rhine, Lough Swilly and death of Tone, January 1797 to November 1798'). A bibliography of Theobald Wolfe Tone and index to all three volumes are to appear in volume III.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763–98) was one of the founders of the Irish Republican national movement, and his political ideas and the circumstances of his life and early death have become powerful political weapons in the hands of later nationalists. Today his name still arouses strong emotions, and he is hailed as the first prophet of an independent Ireland. Tracing Tone's life from his upbringing as a member of the Protestant elite to his exile, trial, and suicide, this new edition of the awardwinning biography brings the book up to date with new scholarship and fresh historical insights.

Book Synopsis Anglo-Irish Relations by : Nick Pelling
Download or read book Anglo-Irish Relations written by Nick Pelling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-27 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing essays, sources with questions and worked answers, together with background to each topic within Irish history, Nick Pelling provides a good foundational text for the study of Anglo-Irish relations. For centuries the relationship between Ireland and England has been difficult. Anglo-Irish Relations, 1798–1922 explores the tempestuous events from Wolfe Tone's failed rising to Michael Collins's arguably more successful effort, culminating in the controversial Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921. Classic struggles between key figures, such as O'Connell and Peel, Parnell and Gladstone, and Lloyd George and Michael Collins, are discussed and analyzed. The deeper issues about the nature of British Imperial rule and the diversity of Irish nationalism are also examined, highlighting the historiographical debate surrounding the so-called 'revisionist' view.
