Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Autobiography and Correspondence of Edward Gibbon, the Historian Writings are justly regarded as one of the best pieces Of Autobiography in English Literature. Supplemented by his nearest surviving friend, with an account of his death and a selection from his familiar letters, they reproduce for us the writer of the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. That book, apart from the kindliness of which he made himself a Centre, was the one fruit of Gibbon's life, and here we see it growing on the tree. The Memoirs help us to under stand where lay the great strength of the History, and why it is without that one feature which, if we looked onlv to its subject and the time when it was written, we should most expect to find. At a time when modern States were tottering, and mighty forces were at work upon the reconstruction of the old world and the new, we might expect a historian of the Decline and Fall of Rome to show us the life and movement of the greatest of all past examples of decay and reconstruction as in a mirror where who ever looks upon it sees his own face in the middle of the scenes that lie behind. The past is always, of course, teacher of the present. Such a past as that which Gibbon set before his readers might be regarded as especially filled with suggestion to the present in which Gibbon himself lived and wrote. But Gibbon by his character was free from all temptation to moralise his tale. He dealt with the past only. He studied thoroughly a period that filled his mind. He mastered his authorities, and they were such as could be mastered by one man; they were all printed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis History, Historians, and Autobiography by : Jeremy D. Popkin
Download or read book History, Historians, and Autobiography written by Jeremy D. Popkin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2005-05-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though history and autobiography both claim to tell true stories about the past, historians have traditionally rejected first-person accounts as subjective and therefore unreliable. What then, asks Jeremy D. Popkin in History, Historians, and Autobiography, are we to make of the ever-increasing number of professional historians who are publishing stories of their own lives? And how is this recent development changing the nature of history-writing, the historical profession, and the genre of autobiography? Drawing on the theoretical work of contemporary critics of autobiography and the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur, Popkin reads the autobiographical classics of Edward Gibbon and Henry Adams and the memoirs of contemporary historians such as Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Peter Gay, Jill Ker Conway, and many others, he reveals the contributions historians' life stories make to our understanding of the human experience. Historians' autobiographies, he shows, reveal how scholars arrive at their vocations, the difficulties of writing about modern professional life, and the ways in which personal stories can add to our understanding of historical events such as war, political movements, and the traumas of the Holocaust. An engrossing overview of the way historians view themselves and their profession, this work will be of interest to readers concerned with the ways in which we understand the past, as well as anyone interested in the art of life-writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the leading British historian of his generation, Hugh Trevor-Roper (1914–2003) is most celebrated and admired as the author of essays. This volume brings together some of the most original and radical writings of his career—many hitherto inaccessible, one never before published, all demonstrating his piercing intellect, urbane wit, and gift for elegant, vivid narrative. This collection focuses on the writing and understanding of history in the eighteenth century and on the great historians and the intellectual context that inspired or provoked their writings. It combines incisive discussion of such figures as Gibbon, Hume, and Carlyle with broad sweeps of analysis and explication. Essays on the Scottish Enlightenment and the Romantic movement are balanced by intimate portraits of lesser-known historians whose significance Trevor-Roper took particular delight in revealing.
