Book Synopsis The Invention of the Automobile - (Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler) by : St. John C. Nixon
Download or read book The Invention of the Automobile - (Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler) written by St. John C. Nixon and published by Edizioni Savine. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “ ... My excuse for writing this book is a desire to ventilate certain facts in relation to the early work of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler of which the public is largely ignorant. Among those who have taken the trouble to investigate the early days of the motor movement, there is a certain amount of controversy as to who invented the motor vehicle, although this question has not, at the moment, extended to the general public. Inevitably it will do so, if the prevailing interest increases, in which event, it is hoped that this book will prove useful, for all the dates and facts, etc., have been fully authenticated. There are, however, several to whom I must express my sincere gratitude for the assistance they have given me. Herr Rudolf Caracciola, the winner, during the 1935 season of motor racing, of the Grand Prix of France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, and Tripoli, to say nothing of other triumphs, and therefore the Champion of Europe, has most kindly written a preface after reading through the manuscript. The Daimler-Benz Aktiengesellschaft of Germany has been indefatigable in providing me with material in regard to certain facts connected with the early experiments of both Benz and Daimler. Mr. Frederick R. Simms, too, has spared no effort to help me with some of the inner details of Daimler’s engineering career.” ( ST. John C. Nixon - September, 1936)

Book Synopsis Engines of Change by : Paul Ingrassia
Download or read book Engines of Change written by Paul Ingrassia and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A narrative like no other: a cultural history that explores how cars have both propelled and reflected the American experience— from the Model T to the Prius. From the assembly lines of Henry Ford to the open roads of Route 66, from the lore of Jack Kerouac to the sex appeal of the Hot Rod, America’s history is a vehicular history—an idea brought brilliantly to life in this major work by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Paul Ingrassia. Ingrassia offers a wondrous epic in fifteen automobiles, including the Corvette, the Beetle, and the Chevy Corvair, as well as the personalities and tales behind them: Robert McNamara’s unlikely role in Lee Iacocca’s Mustang, John Z. DeLorean’s Pontiac GTO , Henry Ford’s Model T, as well as Honda’s Accord, the BMW 3 Series, and the Jeep, among others. Through these cars and these characters, Ingrassia shows how the car has expressed the particularly American tension between the lure of freedom and the obligations of utility. He also takes us through the rise of American manufacturing, the suburbanization of the country, the birth of the hippie and the yuppie, the emancipation of women, and many more fateful episodes and eras, including the car’s unintended consequences: trial lawyers, energy crises, and urban sprawl. Narrative history of the highest caliber, Engines of Change is an entirely edifying new way to look at the American story.

Download or read book The Chandler Automobile written by James H. Lackey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporated by veteran automakers in 1913, the Chandler Motor Car Company was initially successful in a fiercely competitive industry, manufacturing an array of quality automobiles at a range of prices. Yet by the late 1920s the company was floundering under mismanagement. Producing four lines of cars with numerous body styles, Chandler and its lower-priced companion marque, Cleveland, were unable to find markets for their numerous models and seemed in effect to be competing against themselves. Drawing on numerous automotive histories and two large private collections of memorabilia, this exhaustive study of the Chandler Motor Car Company covers the automobiles in detail, including all body styles, and their changes during production. The author chronicles the growth, expansion and later troubles of Chandler and Cleveland, providing fresh insight into the formative years of the auto industry and the personalities who made it go.
