Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authenticity of the Four Gospels The evidence furnished by the opening passage of the Acts of the Apostles to the authorship of the third Gospel, the internal evidence of the Acts to the personality of the author and the various circumstances which identify him as St. Luke are pointed out. The medical language which permeates both the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles is shown to confirm this conclusion. The admissions of M. Renan with reference to St. Luke's authorship of the books are adduced, and the value of them as embodying the conclusions of a hostile witness is indicated. St. Luke is shown to have had ample opportunities of instituting inquiries into the truth of the facts which he records, and a comparison between him and Tacitus as historians in this respect is instituted. The establishment of the authenticity of St. Luke's writings is shown to obviate practically the objections to the other three Gospels. Those Gospels are proved however to rest on sufficient evidence. The value of M. Renan's conclusions as invalidating the force of the objections of sceptical criticism is pointed out, and the admissions of distinguished negative critics are quoted with reference to their fundamental objection to the authenticity of the Gospels, namely, the fact that the writers record supernatural events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Jesus of the Four Gospels The first part of this work is a collation of all that is said, and just what is said, in each of the four Gospels, regarding the more important incidents of Jesus' life. Every statement in the text, it is thought, is accurate, free from personal coloring or sectarian bias, and may be verified from the passages cited. After examining various lives of Jesus, harmonies of the Gospels, etc., there seemed to be need of such a work, which would furnish simply the facts, and leave the reader to form his own conclusions. Certain notes are appended in elucidation of or comment on the text, and these may be taken for what they are worth. Their underlying idea is, that the true greatness of Jesus lay in His being a human Teacher and not a Divine Redeemer, and therefore the supernatural parts of the Gospel story are not of vital importance. The King James version has been used, since that has been the Bible of English-speaking peoples up to the present century, and their conceptions of Jesus have been formed from it, and not from the revised version. The differences between the two versions are probably not material to any matter herein discussed. The second part is an attempt to point out, and comment on, the many and wide divergences that have grown up between the preachings of Jesus and the practices of His professed followers. Its object is not to criticise the short-comings of Christianity, but to bring home to the people of the United States a realization of the practical effect which these divergences have had, and are now having, on political and economic questions of high import to the present and future welfare of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Four Gospels The time of their composition cannot be deter rnined with any degree of certainty; it can be only approximately stated. Somewhere between A. D. 50 and 65 the synoptics, as Matthew, Mark and Luke are called, were written. The Gospel by J ohn dates from a later period. Probably in the decade between A. D. 80 and 90 it was published by the servant of Christ whose name it bears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels as Historical Documents, Vol. 3: The Fourth Gospel My aim in this volume has not been, except incidentally, to throw light upon the subject-matter of the Fourth Gospel, but to ascertain - so far as can by way of a preliminary study be done, and needs to be in order to determine our attitude towards it from the outset in using it - whether it has a right to be treated as an independent historical witness alongside of the Synoptic Gospels, having drawbacks indeed in this character as they have, though largely different ones, but whose testimony cannot any more than theirs be disregarded. I am convinced that this right belongs to it, which in recent times has been and still is denied by many. As a far fuller study than any attempted here of the actual contributions made to our knowledge of the Life and Work of Jesus Christ by each of the four Gospels I may mention T/ze Four/fold Gospel by Dr E. A. Abbott. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of the Four Gospels I did not venture to call upon this eminent man for the mere gratification of a natural curiosity, but for the purpose of ascertaining one or two facts which I needed for a note to Ritter's work on the Holy Land, which I was then editing and translating. As Ritter had been a near and valued friend of Tischendorf, it was a matter of great satisfaction to the latter that an American had proposed to give to the people of England and the United States a version of the works of that great and excellent man; and no welcome could be more cordial than Tischendorf extended. He is by no means the old, smoke-dried, bad-mannered, garrulous, ill-dressed, and offensively dirty man, who often answers in Germany to the title of Professor. On the contrary, Tischendorf is a man looking young and florid, though probably hard upon sixty. I have seen many a man of forty whose face is more worn, and whose air is older, than that of this greatest of German scholars. Nor has he at all that shyness which a life in the study is almost sure to engender; he is free, open, genial, and has the manner of a gentleman who has traveled largely, and who is thoroughly familiar with society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: As Historical Records I have had no other object in the present work than the ascertainment of fact. Nothing wholesome can be obtained from that which is not true. The traditionary beliefs of English-speaking men depend largely, if not wholly, on statements which are not true but which are held to be beyond doubt or question. The soundness of the foundation on which these popular beliefs are said to rest can be determined only by a complete examination of the history contained, or supposed to be contained, in the New Testament writings. I have entered on such an examination in this volume; and I have done so, I hope and believe, in a reverent and temperate spirit. 'Are these things so?' is the only question which I have cared to answer; and they who feel that their first and last duty is to the truth will ask no other. After the prophets, John proclaimed that God was already in the world, and that to know him men required only to be born again in the spirit. Jesus said within himself: If God he in theworld, i must know him. Where is God? And withdrawing into the wilderness, Jesus learned that there is a life of the flesh, of which he had no experience, and that, moreover, there is a manifestation of God of which he had experience. We are fully assured, that there is very much in the four Gospels which manifest the Divine perfections and distino tive beauties of each one, which has not yet been brought forth by those who have sought to explore their inexhaustible depths; that there is here a wide field for diligent research, and that those who will pursue this study, prayerfully, for themselves, will be richly rewarded for their pains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Authorship of the Four Gospels: External Evidences In the summer of 1881, at the Pigeon Cove Ho tel, situated on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, I became acquainted with an intelligent gentleman, aged about seventy years, who resided in Buffalo and, who, like myself, was staying at the hotel for the benefit of the sea air. At an early period in our acquaintance he introduced the subject of the Christian religion as a topic of conversation, and, during several weeks after ward, seemed quite disposed to talk on this subject, whenever an opportunity offered. In one of the earliest of our conversations, he asked me if I had read the Gospel of Marcion. I replied: No! I do not so much as know there is a gospel known by that name, I never heard of it before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Four Gospels?: Or, the Gospel for All the World; A Manual Designed to Aid Christians in the Study of the Scriptures, and to a Better Understanding of the Gospels It is admitted on all hands that the central point of attack upon Christianity in the present age is found in the Gospels. "The life of Jesus," says Tischendorf, "is the most momentous of all questions which the Church has to encounter, - the one which is decisive whether it shall or shall not live." The assailants demand that the Christian apologist shall put his system to the test of exhibiting its philosophic basis and its rational explanation. Whether the demand be reasonable or unreasonable, it is certain that this scientific age will continue to press its questions of why and how. While it is absolutely certain that God's Word will stand all legitimate tests and remain intact to the end of time, it is no less certain that some of the old modes of viewing, exhibiting, and defending it must be abandoned for others which are more truly scientific, or, in other words, more in harmony with the divine truth and thought. It is a growing conviction in many Christian minds, that the most conclusive argument for the divine origin of the four Gospels is not that furnished by the external evidences but by the Gospels themselves; that whoever can be brought to take a truly scientific view of them, that is, to see them as they really are in themselves and their relations, will need no further arguments to convince him that these productions are each and all from God. They will think that it surrenders too much, that its teaching is arbitrary and likely to produce doubt and perplexity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Harmonized Exposition of the Four Gospels, Vol. 1 The present work is designed to be an exposition of the Four Gospels. We feel assured that the general reader of this book will take it up not to study the introductory matter but to find the sense of the word of God. We have found in our own experience that it is very agreeable in reading a book to be lead as soon as possible into medias res. As the patrimony of science grows, the necessity of drawing accurately the lines of demarcation between the different departments becomes greater. Therefore, we believe that the study of the Scriptures will be benefited if the Introduction to Holy Scripture and the Exposition of Holy Scripture be treated of in separate volumes. In the introductory matter of the present volume we shall therefore limit ourselves to a brief treatment of some of the principal facts relating to the Four Gospels. It is a well evidenced fact that from the earliest times of the Christian era the Four Gospels existed in the Church of Christ, and were received as divine Scripture.
