Book excerpt: A book such as this both demonstrates the progress that has been made over recent years, and will also serve to enhance respect for the human rights of persons with intellectual disabilities in the years to come.' - From the Foreword by Orville Endicott This wide-ranging volume provides a multidisciplinary examination of human rights and the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. The book combines historical, psychological, philosophical, social, educational, medical and legal perspectives to form a unique and insightful account of the subject. Initial chapters explain the historical context of rights for people with intellectual disabilities, including the right to life, and propose a conceptual framework to inform contemporary practice. Contributors then explore the many theoretical and practical challenges that people with intellectual disabilities face, in exercising their civil rights, educational rights or participatory rights, for instance. The implications arising from these issues are identified and practical guidelines for support and accommodation are provided. This book will be an essential resource for practitioners, advocates, lawyers, policy-makers and students on disability courses.
Download or read book Nigeria written by Ariel Tenenbaum and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2020 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nigeria - a pluralistic society - is a sub-Saharan Africa country, home to about 200 million people from 371 cultural tribes. All tribes in Nigeria have their specific cultural beliefs and practices. As a matter of fact, many of these practices had been in existence for hundreds of years, even before British colonization (1800-1960). There exists a strong interrelationship between the society and health. Some practices in the society have negative health implications while some do not. Unfortunately, many of the traditional or cultural practices in the Nigerian society have more associated harms than benefits. In this book we have gathered research that describes health and health aspects of modern Nigeria, which we hope will be of interest to the reader"--

Download or read book A Clash of Worlds written by John Putala and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sought to answer the question: what is the experience of a direct care worker while out in the community with people with mental and physical disabilities? The existing literature was analyzed to give a description of the current state of research in regard to the research subject. The Heuristic Research model was used in order to maintain the author's connection to the research topic. The six phases of the Heuristic method were implemented: initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. Three individuals that worked in the direct care field were interviewed in regard to their experience while out in the community with their clients. The data gathered from the three co-researchers revealed eight common themes: motivated by paycheck versus by client, resentment, exposure of disabilities, community reactions, parental role, family inclusion, desire for improvement, and fun. These themes were composed into a composite narrative to elicit an overall portrayal of the experience of a direct care worker while out in the community with people with mental and physical disabilities. The findings from this study offer information that could be used to analyze the current state of the direct care field. It provides insight into areas of the field that may need improvement, and what direct care workers feel are the positives and negatives of their job.

Those with physical and intellectual disabilities, including vision and hearing impairment, Down syndrome, locomotor disability, and more continue to face challenges of accessibility in their daily lives, especially when facing an increasingly digitalized society. This highly accessible book will help families and professionals develop a deeper understanding of this highly-successful approach and its associated issues, resulting in improved communication opportunities within a variety of care, therapeutic and educational settings. A glossary format and thematic structure are employed to enable readers to quickly access topics of interest, and gradually build on their understanding of the approach. A useful reference and reflective tool, this book will interest both family and professional carers, support staff, special education teachers, learning disability nurses, social services practitioners, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, or anyone who is interested in intensive interaction and wants to learn more.
Book Synopsis The Role of Human Factors in Home Health Care by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Role of Human Factors in Home Health Care written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-11-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of home health care has raised many unsolved issues and will have consequences that are far too broad for any one group to analyze in their entirety. Yet a major influence on the safety, quality, and effectiveness of home health care will be the set of issues encompassed by the field of human factors research-the discipline of applying what is known about human capabilities and limitations to the design of products, processes, systems, and work environments. To address these challenges, the National Research Council began a multidisciplinary study to examine a diverse range of behavioral and human factors issues resulting from the increasing migration of medical devices, technologies, and care practices into the home. Its goal is to lay the groundwork for a thorough integration of human factors research with the design and implementation of home health care devices, technologies, and practices. On October 1 and 2, 2009, a group of human factors and other experts met to consider a diverse range of behavioral and human factors issues associated with the increasing migration of medical devices, technologies, and care practices into the home. This book is a summary of that workshop, representing the culmination of the first phase of the study.
