Book excerpt: The Atlantic Book of Modern Plays stands as a testament to the diverse landscapes of early 20th-century drama, encapsulating a range of literary styles from the poetic to the naturalistic. This anthology showcases the rich tapestry of cultural and intellectual movements that characterized the era, featuring plays that delve into existential questions, societal norms, and the human condition with unparalleled depth and variety. The collection draws together works that, while distinct in voice and approach, share an underlying exploration of modernity, making it a crucial compilation for understanding the period's dramatic evolution. Noteworthy are the contributions that mingle folklore with modernist sensibilities, creating a unique dialogue between the past and present. The authors and editors behind this anthology were pivotal figures in their respective literary circles, hailing from diverse backgrounds but united by their contributions to modern drama and literature. Figures like Yeats and Synge are synonymous with the Irish Literary Revival, while others like O'Neill and Galsworthy bring perspectives from American and English theatre, respectively. This blend of cultural and national backgrounds not only highlights the global nature of modernist themes but also reflects the varied ways these themes were explored across different societies and stages. Their collective works here underline the shifts in narrative style, thematic concern, and character depiction that mirror the tumultuous changes of their time. Inviting readers into the world of early 20th-century drama, The Atlantic Book of Modern Plays offers a unique opportunity to experience a plethora of artistic visions and narratives within a single collection. For scholars, students, and enthusiasts of modern literature and drama, this anthology not only serves as an educational resource but also as a platform for witnessing the dialogue between disparate yet interconnected voices. Embracing this collection affords a deeper appreciation for the breadth and depth of modernist exploration in drama, making it an indispensable addition to any literary library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic Book of Modern Plays Edited with Introduction, Comment and Annotated Bibliography by Sterling Andrus Leonard We are at present in the midst of a bewildering quantity of play-publication and production. The one-act play in particular, chiefly represented in this volume, appears to be taking the place of that rather squeezed sponge, the short story, in the favor of the reading public. Of course, this tendency has its reaction in schoolrooms. One even hears of high-school classes which attempt to keep up with the entire output of such dramas in English readings. If this is not merely an apologue, it is certainly a horrible example. The bulk of current drama, as of published matter generally, is not worthy the time of the English class. Only what is measurably of rank, in truth and fineness, with the literature which has endured from past times can be defended for use there. And we have too much that is both well fitted to young people's keen interest and enjoyment, and beautifully worthy as well, for time to be wasted upon the third- and fourth-rate. Obviously, much of the best in modern play-writing has not been included in this volume. Because of copyright complications the works of Mr. Masefield, Mr. Shaw, Mr. Drinkwater, and Sir James Barrie are not here represented. The plays by these writers that seem best fitted to use by teachers and pupils in high schools, together with a large number of other dramas for this purpose, are listed and annotated at the back of the book. Suggestions as to desirable inclusions and omissions will be welcomed by the editor and the publishers.

Book excerpt: "All In the "Foreword" the Editor points out the fact that "play-publications," and especially the one-act drama, are usurping the place of the short story in the esteem of the reading public The result is that a large amount of good and bad dramas are appearing and naturally we find the high school classes and others reacting to them, and should have some carefully chosen bases for our judgments of this class of productions. This volume furnishes exceptionally helpful guidance along this line. There is a thoughtful and discriminating "Introduction" on the reading of plays, followed by more than a dozen of the best ones for amateur use; also Questions for Discussion, Notes on the Dramas and Dramatists, and the Bibliography above referred to. This is a volume with a mission. -Education, Vol. 42 [1922] The List of Plays: The Philosopher of Butterbiggens by Harold Chapin Spreading the News by Lady Gregory The Beggar and the King by Winthrop Parkhurst Tides by George Middleton Ile by Eugene O'Neill Campbell of Kilmhor by J. Following in their own way the lead of the Theatre Libre in Paris and the Freie Buhne in Germany, and of the Independent and the Repertory theatres in Great Britain, numerous "little theatres" and drama associations in this country are giving impulsion and direction to the movement for finer drama and more excellent presentation.
