Book excerpt: This 25-session log book is for astrophotographers who want to record as much data for each session as they want. It's for beginners to help establish good imaging session habits early on; for the advanced astrophotographer who wants and needs a consistent place to record and find the data they worked hard to collect, and for the astrophotographer who likes to look back on old records and reminisce about those special sessions. If you are an astrophotographer, whether using a simple setup of a DSLR, lens, and tripod, or a more complex arrangement of telescope, mount, filters, and dedicated astrophotography camera, I hope you will find this log book to be very convenient and useful. Four pages are dedicated to each session, which includes the target, date, and location of the session, equipment used, exposure plan details, environmental information, and two pages for observation and processing notes. The Appendix contains a general checklist for astrophotography sessions, session planning considerations, Bortle scale, seeing scale, transparency scale, a section on ethical astrophotography, commonly-used formulas and unit conversions, and a handy equipment data sheet for specifications often used in common calculations. The framework provides a comprehensive list of data you may want to record, and also serves as a reminder or checklist to use for your imaging session planning and set up. The book format is 6x9, bound with twin loop wire which allows the book to lay flat and for the front cover to be brought all the way around to reduce the size of the footprint of the book next to your laptop on your imaging table. Each book is hand made by the author, so there will be variations in the appearance, end papers, and other aspects of the book. The front cover is 2mm thick book board and the back cover is 2mm thick book board for strength, durability during storage and travel, and provides a solid writing surface. The pages are strong 24lb, 90gsm paper, also for durability and long life as a record of your achievements.

Book excerpt: In this book, Warren Keller reveals the secrets of astro-image processing software PixInsight in a practical and easy to follow manner, allowing the reader to produce stunning astrophotographs from even mediocre data. As the first comprehensive post-processing platform to be created by astro-imagers for astro-imagers, it has for many, replaced the generic graphics editors as the software of choice. With clear instructions from Keller, astrophotographers can get the most from its tools to create amazing images. Capable of complex post-processing routines, PixInsight is also an advanced pre-processing software, through which astrophotographers calibrate and stack their exposures into completed master files. Although it is extremely powerful, PixInsight has been inadequately documented in print--until now. With screenshots to help illustrate the process, it is a vital guide.

Book excerpt: Spectacular nebulae where stars are born, beautiful star clusters from the early formation of the Milky Way, and galaxies as far as a billion light years away, all feature in this book of stunning images from astro photographer Chris Baker. The author takes the reader on a journey through time and space to the Deep Sky, far beyond our Solar System. It is a pictorial description of the awe-inspiring wondrous objects that exist "out there". The images are of objects from hundreds to many millions of light years away; distances of such enormity are hard for our minds to grasp. The book presents fascinating information on what the Earth was like when the light started its earth-bound journey through space. For example, as the light left the Andromeda Galaxy 2.5 million years ago on its interstellar journey to Chris's telescope, the Himalayas are still being raised. Chapters are included describing the basics of astrophotography, as modern telescopes and cameras make this a rewarding hobby well within reach of the amateur astronomer. Chris describes his observatory in the mountains of Spain along with practical guidance on how to get started in astronomy. With a concise, clear discussion on the background of astronomical science, this is above all, a book to celebrate the beauty and fascination of space.

It tells the true stories of the 46 pioneers who did most to master the art of celestial photography, as it was known during its early days; and whose efforts have made it possible for us to see the many magnificent pictures of the Universe featured in books, magazines and on the internet. In its TWO magnificent volumes is contained an unbelievable collection of tales of adventure, adversity and ultimate triumph and tells the uplifting stories of this small band of ordinary men and women, who did such extraordinary things; overcoming obstacles as diverse as war, poverty, cholera, death, very unfriendly cannibal natives and even exploding donkeys. The night sky is filled with immense beauty and mystery, and it’s no wonder so many photographers want to learn how to take great photographs of all it contains: the moon, stars, planets, galaxies, and beyond. But for photographers just getting started photographing the cosmos, some books veer into “advanced” territory way too quickly, filled with difficult theory and long, expensive lists of “must-have” gear. If you’re just starting your adventure in astrophotography, The Beginner’s Guide to Astrophotography is the book for you! Photographer Mike Shaw teaches you everything you need to know to capture great images of the night sky—without breaking the bank or needing an advanced physics degree. In this book, you’ll quickly gain an understanding of the night sky, then dive into gear and settings. Regardless of the camera you own (smartphone, DSLR, or mirrorless), you’ll be able to capture shots you love. You’ll learn all about the gear you absolutely need (and what you don’t) as well as the accessories that will make your astrophotography life easier. Then you’ll dive into camera technique: exposure settings, focusing tricks, and composition techniques to get the shot. You’ll also learn about the best apps for astronomy, weather, planning, and navigation. Mike walks you through how to plan a shoot, set up for it, and capture your images. Finally, you’ll learn the post-processing techniques that will have your images looking their best. You’ll learn how to photograph: • The moon (full, crescent, lunar eclipse, solar eclipse) • The Milky Way (the core, the central band) • Constellations (Orion, Perseus, Scorpius, etc.) • Asterisms (Big Dipper, Summer Triangle, Orion’s Belt, etc.) • Star trails • Planets (Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars) • Aurora Borealis • Meteors • Satellites (such as the Internaional Space Station) • Nebulae • Star Clusters • Galaxies • Comets • And more!
