This new book focuses on HIV and aging in the context of ageism with regard to prevention, treatment guidelines, funding, and the engagement of communities and health and social service organizations. The lack of perceived HIV risk in late adulthood among older people themselves, as well on the part of providers and society in general, has led to a lack of investment in education, testing, and programmatic responses. Ageism perpetuates the invisibility of older adults and, in turn, renders current medical and social service systems unprepared to respond to patients’ needs. While ageism may lead to some advantages – discounts for services, for example – it is the negative aspects that must be addressed when determining the appropriate community-level response to the epidemic.

Despite improvements in glycaemic controls and other advanced therapies, vascular complications remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Therefore, prevention strategies for cardiovascular complications of T2D must be considered a global health goal in light of the increasing prevalence of the disease and its complications. This Research Topic aims to explore current approaches and novel insight in the prevention of cardiovascular complications of diabetes. New therapies for diabetes, including treatment strategies and improvements in the management of diabetic complications as well as considerations of dietary interventions and physical activity will be examined. Moreover, progresses in identifying biomarkers for the screening, diagnosis, and prognosis of cardiovascular complications of diabetes through innovative technologies (e.g., omics) will be examined.

Research in these areas will also help to understand the role of gender and help in the planning of gender-responsive health promotion or preventive campaigns and gender-responsive interventions. There is a need to address the impact of gender norms, roles, and the social determinants of health on the differential exposure to risk factors between men and women. Health-seeking behavior, life years of exposure, and the responses from health care providers in a gender/sex aggregated manner could also give interesting insights into the role of gender. Men are not homogenous groups and their health opportunities and risks vary according to social, economic, environmental, and cultural influences throughout their lifetime. The disproportionate morbidity among women and disproportionately high mortality among men also need to be looked into. Articles on the above areas will also help to address the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on gender equality and empowering women with NCD-related targets under SDG 3 on ensuring healthy lives. In this context, it would be invaluable to create and compile research articles in this area.
