The collection examines the many ways in which a "global consciousness" was forged during the Sixties. In various sections, essays examine the ways revolution was imagined throughout the Sixties, the implications of the "nation" for various liberation movements, the complex politicization of bodies during this time, and the enduring legacy of the period in terms of lasting political movements and cultural landscapes. Book excerpt: "In the Atlantic Ocean, there is an archipelago of nine volcanic islands first settled by man at the beginning of the Renaissance. This is a study of the people of those islands who are essentially migrants going from one continent to the other. This is a story of that migration from the mainland of Europe to the valleys of California. These people who rode the ocean waves brought with them a deep-seated interest in farming and derived prosperity where there was only untilled soil. This is a story of their character, their ability, their culture, and their resolve."--Introduction

Book Synopsis The Experiences of Basque and Spanish Iron Workers and their Descendants in Wales from 1900 by : Stephen James Murray
Download or read book The Experiences of Basque and Spanish Iron Workers and their Descendants in Wales from 1900 written by Stephen James Murray and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is concerned with human migration at the turn of the twentieth century, specifically with iron workers moving from Spain to south Wales. The research includes an oral history project involving the descendants of some of the original migrants. The book explores the events and challenges that the migrants and their families faced in their new Welsh homes. Those experiences include periods of conflict, such as the Spanish Civil War (in which family members were involved), poverty, disease, heartache and the challenge to their religious and political beliefs. The work also highlights how it was that many of the Spanish overcame hurdles to fully integrate into their new location by learning a new language, a new sport (rugby), choir membership and a new church. It also describes the environment, in which they lived, as a cosmopolitan location where they were exposed, at intervals, to industrial conflict and racism, but where they all eventually became Welsh.

Book Synopsis We are All Multiculturalists Now by : Nathan Glazer
Download or read book We are All Multiculturalists Now written by Nathan Glazer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The melting pot is no more. Where not very long ago we sought assimilation, we now pursue multiculturalism. Nowhere has this transformation been more evident than in the public schools, where a traditional Eurocentric curriculum has yielded to diversity--and, often, to confrontation and confusion. In a book that brings clarity and reason to this highly charged issue, Nathan Glazer explores these sweeping changes. He offers an incisive account of why we all--advocates and skeptics alike--have become multiculturalists, and what this means for national unity, civil society, and the education of our youth. Focusing particularly on the impact in public schools, Glazer dissects the four issues uppermost in the minds of people on both sides of the multicultural fence: Whose "truth" do we recognize in the curriculum? Will an emphasis on ethnic roots undermine or strengthen our national unity in the face of international disorder? Will attention to social injustice, past and present, increase or decrease civil disharmony and strife? Does a multicultural curriculum enhance learning, by engaging students' interest and by raising students' self-esteem, or does it teach irrelevance at best and fantasy at worst? Glazer argues cogently that multiculturalism arose from the failure of mainstream society to assimilate African Americans; anger and frustration at their continuing separation gave black Americans the impetus for rejecting traditions that excluded them. But, willingly or not, "we are all multiculturalists now," Glazer asserts, and his book gives us the clearest picture yet of what there is to know, to fear, and to ask of ourselves in this new identity.
Book Synopsis Visible Differences by : Dominic Pulera
Download or read book Visible Differences written by Dominic Pulera and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2002-06-05 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race. The mere mention of the R-word is a surefire conversation-stopper. In this book about AmericaÆs most divisive social issue, Dominic J. Pulera offers a compelling roadmap to our future. This accessible and penetrating analysis is the first to include detailed coverage of AmericaÆs five "racial" groups: whites, blacks, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. The author contends that race will matter to Americans during the twenty-first century because of visible differences, and that differences in physical appearance separating the races are the single most important factor shaping intergroup relations, in conjunction with the social, cultural, economic, and political ramifications that accompany them. Pulera shows how, why, when, and where race matters in the United States and who is affected by it. He explains the ongoing demographic transition of America from a predominantly white country to one where nonwhites are increasingly numerous and consequently more visible. The advent of a multiracial consciousness has tremendous implications for AmericaÆs future, because the racial significance of almost every part of the American experience is increasing as a result. The author concludes on a note of cautious optimism as he explores whether the visible differences dividing Americans are reconcilable.
