Book excerpt: Much of the research on teen dating violence has attempted to take the ideas associated with adult domestic violence and intimate partner violence and apply it to teen relationships. This research was conducted to discover the underlying dimensions of teen relationships and the violence that exists in these relationships in order to provide a conceptual idea of who should be targeted, with what information, and at what age with prevention efforts aimed at reducing teen dating violence. Wichita Kansas has implemented a variety of prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of teen dating violence in the community for almost a decade. Participants in this study were recruited from 6th through 10th graders who were scheduled to receive intervention curriculum in their schools. Several items from the General Youth Relationship Survey-Student Version (Hertzog, Matson, & Rowley) were analyzed using factor analysis to discover the underlying dimensions of teen dating violence. Physical/emotional abuse, monitoring and controlling behaviors, and relational entitlements were the key dimensions gleaned from this analysis. An examination of the factor score means with several student characteristics were also analyzed. Girls were found to witness more teen dating violence in their friend's relationships as well as hold more agreement with relational entitlements than boys. African American teens were more likely to report witnessing teen dating violence than Hispanic or white teens; however, Hispanic teens were more likely to report that a person has certain relational entitlements over their partner. This study also found that, in order to provide actual prevention, efforts should be targeted towards late elementary to early middle school-aged students.

Book excerpt: Communication skills within dating contexts are developed during the adolescent years, and are associated with a lifelong ability to have satisfying, enduring, and non-violent partnerships. As such, they are currently and increasingly implemented into both more general forms of healthy relationship education, as well as that targeting the prevention of teen dating violence specifically. Reaching Mexican American youth with culturally and developmentally appropriate relationship education, including communication skills, may be particularly important given their earlier transitions to marital and parenting relationships, acculturative stressors that present them with unique coupling challenges, and their higher rates of teen dating violence as compared to European American youth. We know very little about how Mexican American dating couples communicate about areas of conflict. This dissertation research utilizes Bell and Naugle's (2008) framework of interpersonal violence to explore how cultural and developmental considerations may be integrated in order to better understand how communication behaviors contribute to Mexican American middle adolescents' experiences with dating conflict. I use an observational study design in order to 1.) Qualitatively explore the communication strategies used by a sample of committed couples, including integration of culturally- and developmentally-relevant contexts, 2.) Quantitatively examine whether couple-level discrepancies in acculturation are associated with observed negativity, including whether this relationship may be mediated by dissimilar gender-related beliefs, and to 3.) Review empirical findings pertaining to the communication behaviors of Mexican American adolescents and to integrate ecodevelopmental theory in said framework as informed by Papers 1, 2, and literature specific to this topic area. The ultimate aim of this dissertation research is to generate findings that may improve the dating health of Mexican American adolescents living in the United States.

Book excerpt: Dating violence in ethnic minority populations is an understudied phenomenon and little attention has been paid to the experiences of Mexican American youth; less research has been done on how those experiences alter perceptions and acceptance of participation in prevention programs. This study advances knowledge on how Mexican American adolescents view dating violence prevention programs and how cultural beliefs and values may hinder or encourage effective participation. Focus groups (N = 9) were form with Mexican American youth aged 15-17 years separated by gender and acculturation status (Mexican Oriented/Bicultural/Anglo Oriented), as determined previously by acculturation scores measured by the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARMSA; 0 or below = Mexican Oriented, 0-1 = Bicultural, 1 or above = Anglo Oriented). Several themes emerged throughout the focus group discussions that were derived from culturally-based needs. Mexican American adolescents made recommendations for program development (e.g., a broad curriculum beyond the topic of dating violence) and delivery (e.g., barriers to participation, the implications of peer involvement) within the context of their cultural values and needs. Low acculturated and bicultural teens identified specific cultural needs and their relevance within a dating violence prevention program. However, across all groups, adolescents felt that the needs of Mexican American youth were similar to other youth in regards to dating violence prevention programs. Implications for how social work can best design and implement prevention programs for Mexican American adolescents are discussed.

Book excerpt: The present study employed a theoretically-driven multi-factorial design in order to identify intermediary variables that affect the strength of the relationship between child maltreatment and subsequent violence in teenage dating relationships. Trends in adolescent dating aggression were further analysed through use of a prospective design. Adolescents in grades nine, ten or eleven at two high schools in London, Ontario (N = 450) completed questionnaires about experiences of violence in their family of origin, emotional adjustment, social functioning, and experiences with violence in their dating relationships. Students were re-surveyed three months later. Analysis of a structural equation model (SEM) of aggression in adolescent dating supported a model of intimate relationship violence in which emotional adjustment (i.e. interpersonal hostility, hyper-sensitivity, and trauma symptomotology) and interpersonal functioning (i.e. negative peer influences, need for interpersonal power and control, and overidentification with stereotypically masculine traits) mediated the relationship between violence in the family of origin and subsequent dating violence. This model provides support for the developmental and social learning perspectives on the association of child maltreatment on subsequent relationship violence. The investigation also indicated that adolescent dating violence is common, has a tendency to be mutual, continues throughout the length of each relationship, and carries over into new relationships. Analysis of the prospective data indicated that experience with dating violence had a small but significant impact on adolescents' feelings of interpersonal hostility 3 months later. Perpetration of dating violence also had a small but significant impact on self-perceived desire for interpersonal power and control. However, contrary to expectations, there were no discernible gender differences in the impact of dating violence on emotional well-being. Implications of the study for intervention and future research are discussed.
