Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The noted archaeologist explores the varieties of prehistoric cave art across the world and offers surprising insights into its purpose and meaning. What drew our Stone Age ancestors into caves to paint in charcoal and red hematite, to watch the likenesses of lions, bison, horses, and aurochs as they flickered by firelight? Was it a creative impulse, a spiritual dawn, a shamanistic conception of the world? In this book, Jean Clottes, one of the most renowned figures in the study of cave paintings, pursues an answer to the “why” of Paleolithic art. Discussing sites and surveys across the world, Clottes offers personal reflections on how we have viewed these paintings in the past, what we learn from looking at them across geographies, and what these paintings may have meant—and what function they may have served—for their artists. Steeped in Clottes’s shamanistic theories of cave painting, What Is Paleolithic Art? travels from well-known Ice Age sites like Chauvet, Altamira, and Lascaux to visits with contemporary aboriginal artists, evoking a continuum between the cave paintings of our prehistoric past and the living rock art of today. Clottes’s work lifts us from the darkness of our Paleolithic origins to reveal surprising insights into how we think, why we create, why we believe, and who we are

This publication not only presents information on modern non-academic flintknappers, it also addresses issues of interest to anyone studying folk technologies in general."--The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute "This is a superb book, authored by one of the only people with both the anthropological background and the connections in the world of contemporary flintknapping to write it. It really is unlike any work I'm aware of in lithics studies."--Michael Stafford, Director, Cranbrook Institute of Science Making arrowheads, blades, and other stone tools was once a survival skill and is still a craft practiced by thousands of flintknappers around the world. In the United States, knappers gather at regional "knap-ins" to socialize, exchange ideas and material, buy and sell both equipment and knapped art, and make stone tools in the company of others. In between these gatherings, the knapping community stays connected through newsletters and the Internet. In this book, avid knapper and professional anthropologist John Whittaker offers an insider's view of the knapping community. He explores why stone tools attract modern people and what making them means to those who pursue this art. He describes how new members are incorporated into the knapping community, how novices learn the techniques of knapping and find their roles within the group, how the community is structured, and how ethics, rules, and beliefs about knapping are developed and transmitted. He also explains how the practice of knapping relates to professional archaeology, the trade in modern replicas of stone tools, and the forgery of artifacts. Whittaker's book thus documents a fascinating subculture of American life and introduces the wider public to an ancient and still rewarding craft.

Book excerpt: 'However much you thought you knew about The Stones before you read it, afterwards you'll know more. It's glittering' - Simon Napier-Bell 'Special [...] it's brilliant' Johnnie Walker From Sunday Times bestselling author Lesley-Ann Jones On 12 July 1962, the Rollin' Stones performed their first-ever gig at London's Marquee jazz club. Down the line, a 'g' was added, a spark was lit and their destiny was sealed. No going back. These five white British kids set out to play the music of black America. They honed a style that bled bluesy undertones into dark insinuations of women, sex and drugs. Denounced as 'corruptors of youth' and 'messengers of the devil', they created some of the most thrilling music ever recorded. Now, their sound and attitude seem louder and more influential than ever. Elvis is dead and the Beatles are over, but Jagger and Richards bestride the world. The Stones may be gathering moss, but on they roll. Yet how did the ultimate anti-establishment misfits become the global brand we know today? Who were the casualties, and what are the forgotten legacies? Can the artist ever be truly divisible from the art? Lesley-Ann Jones's new history tracks this contradictory, disturbing, granitic and unstoppable band through hope, glory and exile, into the juggernaut years and beyond into rock's ongoing reckoning . . . where the Stones seem more at odds than ever with the values and heritage against which they have always rebelled. Good, bad and often ugly, here are the Rolling Stones as never before.

Book excerpt: Can old stones talk? Yes, but not so much of themselves as lifeless bits of crystalline rock, rather through the art created by our Stone Age ancestors. They have left this for us to appreciate but for too long their portable rock art has been ignored or deprecated as meaningless, or even non-existent. The image that researchers of prehistory have passed down to us is of fearsome hunters, with brute mentalities, dressed in rough and ready skins, with little self-expression, minimal intelligence and, more to the point, they are devoid of any humour; ART! However, the issue is that it is not that the humour, self-expression, sarcasm, wit and art did not exist, it is just that those researchers who should know better lacked the latter and were just not appreciating it. Most of the art now left to us is from flint and chert knapping, while woodworking, as equally as important, has rotted away; but lest we forget, stone technology has been around for at least 90% of hominin & human existence. So, please join me on a journey of discovery through this ancient artform as I uncover and investigate the arty secrets, seeing how certain inspired ancestors wanted to be seen, as creative, imaginative, emotional beings - just like us!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of the Stone Age: Forty Thousand Years of Rock Art The birth of 'advanced hunter culture' must be sought in the last phases of the Ice Age, some years ago. Its demise can be observed in our own day, for there are still some peoples the Bushmen in South Africa, for example who are the last surviving practitioners of this once wide spread mode of economic life. With peoples in this stage of development their entire existence in all aspects economic, social and spiritual is dominated by hunting. Everything is focussed upon the quest for game. All man's thoughts and emotions are centred. Upon the constant conflict, practical and spiritual, with animals. This leads to a conception of the relationship between man and beast as a very real unity of substance, that is to say, to a belief in the unity of the entire animal world and the interchangeability of human and animal forms of existence. 1 These far-reaching problems cannot be gone into in detail here, but it may be pointed out that in many places 'advanced hunters' had to their credit varied artistic achievements, a genuine 'ritual art' which gives us most interesting in sights into the spiritual world in which these peoples lived. We are concerned here with rock pictures, although the art of the 'advanced hunters' also comprises minor arts such as sculpture, engraved or painted decoration on movable objects, and much else besides. But one should not jump to the conclusion that all the rock engravings and paintings scattered over the entire globe are the work of 'advanced hunt ers'. Rock pictures can also be produced by peoples in other stages of cultural development, although in such cases one must frequently reckon with the possibility that influences or traditions derived from hunters play a certain role. Naturalistic works are found most particularly in the southern parts of the region inhabited by 'advanced hunters'. This fact will be illustrated in the various sections of the present volume. These sections do not amount to an exhaustive survey. Such a survey would have to comprise much more than the few glimpses given here of Franco Cantabrian and Eastern Spanish art in south-western Europe, of the rockpaintings in North Africa (a region where pictures by hunters are interspersed with others by cattle-raisers, which are also treated here), of the rock art of South Africa, and finally that of Australia. Some other centres of rock pictures, principally in Africa and the Near East, have had to be omitted. Nor has it been possible to mention the rock art of the Arctic, although it may be pointed out here that in Scandinavia, in addition to engravings executed by agriculturists of the Bronze Age, there is also a very impressive widely diffused group of works by Stone Age hunters and fishermen. Other evidence of Arctic art is to be found in Karelia, Western Siberia and Central Asia. Finally, no attention has been paid in these pages to rock art in the western hemisphere, which also belongs in part to hunter culture. Despite these limitations this volume will perhaps help to show that the 'ritual art' works of the 'advanced hunters', some of which date back to the Ice Age and some to more recent periods, are as impressive and beautiful as they are diversified and informative. The fact that the various regions of rock art are dealt with independently by different authors, and that each is alone responsible for the opinions expressed, shows how varied the approach to these problems can be. While some authors have kept rather to the traditional method of interpretation others have attempted to strike out along new paths. But all endeavour to introduce the reader to a subject which, owing to the magnificence of many of the works discussed, can also give something to those who are not so familiar with the mysterious world in which the minds of these hunter peoples moved.
