Book excerpt: Brazilian Butt Lift has been described by many, but there is no definitive resource or book that details the procedure as performed by Brazilian Plastic Surgeons. The editors conducted a recent survey among the members of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgeons (SBCP) and have seen that there are many differences in approach, style, technique, and even materials used between what is being done around the world and what is being done in Brazil. While addressing recent media attention and scares, this book features contributions from world renowned Brazilian and international Plastic Surgeons addressing the high morbidity and mortality recently reported and establish tried and true safety protocols. To increase the scope of the book, differing views of techniques and methods are also included, making this a truly global book covering the specific gluteal region. Gluteal Fat Augmentation: Best Practices in Brazilian Butt Lift will open with the history of the procedure, go through the anatomy and the ethnic aspects of the aesthetics of the gluteal region. The book features special chapters on gluteal fat augmentation and a wide variety of techniques to improve the gluteal contour. A wealth of images accompany the text to fully illustrate the different approaches and techniques of gluteal fat augmentation, reshaping, and contouring including the use of fillers, implants, lift, and correction of depressions and deformities of the region. Written for practicing plastic surgeons, this book is poised to become the go-to reference for cosmetic and reconstructive concerns surrounding the gluteal region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn Gluteal Sculpting from the Master! Gluteal sculpting procedures have become increasingly popular today as patients requesting body contouring improvements recognize that a nicely shaped buttock provides balance and proportion to the total body aesthetic. The Art of Gluteal Sculpting, by Dr. Constantino G. Mendieta, an acknowledged expert in this area, is the definitive work on this topic. The dramatic increase in requests for gluteal contouring procedures requires that plastic surgeons develop not only a mastery of a range of body contouring procedures, but also the ability to recognize each patient's body frame type so that appropriate interventions can be planned. This book provides surgeons with the comprehensive, clinical information they need to meet their patients' demands. Comprehensive Coverage This magnificently illustrated semi-atlas work consists of seven chapters in two parts. Part I begins with a seminal chapter, Evaluation Based on Anatomic Landmarks, that sets the tone for the entire book and demonstrates the importance of anatomy in influencing outcomes. In this invaluable chapter, Dr. Mendieta provides his comprehensive evaluation system developed and refined over an eight-year period. This system represents "another way of seeing"; it provides the foundation for all of the techniques that follow with critical guidelines for assessing specific anatomic components and developing a roadmap for treating individual patients. The second chapter, Patient Selection and Clinical Decision Making, takes the principles established in the evaluation system and applies them to a range of patients with different body types, quantities of fat, and anatomic configurations. From this clinical application a treatment plan is derived and recommended for each patient type discussed. Part II focuses on different techniques for gluteal reshaping. A detailed chapter on fat grafting introduces this section; it provides step-by-step details on Dr. Mendieta's technique for large volume liposuction and fat grafting in the gluteal area. This is his preferred method used in the majority of cases, and he details its advantages, limitations, and potential outcomes. The next two chapters focus on techniques for implant augmentation: one on intramuscular implant placement, and the second, contributed by the noted surgeon, Dr. Jose de la Pena, on subfascial implant augmentation. The final two chapters focus on excisional techniques. Chapter 6 describes Dr. Mendieta's exciting new Miami Thong Lift for Inner Gluteal Fold Excision, and Chapter 7 provides a detailed description of Circumferential Body and Buttock Lifting, by renowned surgeon Dr. Al Aly. Beautifully Illustrated The four-color artwork depicts the surface anatomy as well as the underlying structures to enhance understanding. Numerous case examples demonstrate the excellent outcomes from these procedures. Step-by-step technique is demonstrated for each of the procedures discussed. One DVD, with two operative videos, accompanies the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biopolitics of Beauty examines how beauty became an aim of national health in Brazil. Using ethnographic fieldwork carried out in Brazilian hospitals, the author shows how plastic surgeons and patients navigate the public health system to transform beauty into a basic health right. The book historically traces the national concern with beauty to Brazilian eugenics, which established beauty as an index of the nation’s racial improvement. From here, Jarrín explains how plastic surgeons became the main proponents of a raciology of beauty, using it to gain the backing of the Brazilian state. Beauty can be understood as an immaterial form of value that Jarrín calls “affective capital,” which maps onto and intensifies the social hierarchies of Brazilian society. Patients experience beauty as central to national belonging and to gendered aspirations of upward mobility, and they become entangled in biopolitical rationalities that complicate their ability to consent to the risks of surgery. The Biopolitics of Beauty explores not only the biopolitical regime that made beauty a desirable national project, but also the subtle ways in which beauty is laden with affective value within everyday social practices—thus becoming the terrain upon which race, class, and gender hierarchies are reproduced and contested in Brazil.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure for women considering this procedure. Surgical buttocks enhancement has evolved over the years and newer techniques have improved the outcome with much easier post-operative recovery. The reader will find useful information about a technique that Dr. Burden uses to harvest fat from areas of excess, filter and concentrate the fatty tissue for transfer, and to precisely graft the fat into the buttocks. The result is a slimming of certain areas where the fatty tissue was removed, such as the hips, thighs, or abdomen and fuller buttocks. Dr. Burden believes that this technique has the highest rate of patient satisfaction when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. Patients typically comment on how much better their clothes fit after this procedure. The book is organized in an easy to read Question and Answer format that provides answers to the most common questions asked by prospective patients. William R. Burden, M.D., F.A.C.S., is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is the founder and CEO of Destin Plastic Surgery in Destin, Florida, one of the Southeast's most recognized cosmetic facilities. Book excerpt: In 1948, journalist Ray Sprigle traded his whiteness to live as a black man for four weeks. A little over a decade later, John Howard Griffin famously "became" black as well, traveling the American South in search of a certain kind of racial understanding. Contemporary history is littered with the surprisingly complex stories of white people passing as black, and here Alisha Gaines constructs a unique genealogy of "empathetic racial impersonation--white liberals walking in the fantasy of black skin under the alibi of cross-racial empathy. At the end of their experiments in "blackness," Gaines argues, these debatably well-meaning white impersonators arrived at little more than false consciousness. Complicating the histories of black-to-white passing and blackface minstrelsy, Gaines uses an interdisciplinary approach rooted in literary studies, race theory, and cultural studies to reveal these sometimes maddening, and often absurd, experiments of racial impersonation. By examining this history of modern racial impersonation, Gaines shows that there was, and still is, a faulty cultural logic that places enormous faith in the idea that empathy is all that white Americans need to make a significant difference in how to racially navigate our society.
