Book Synopsis Music in Eighteenth-Century Britain by : David Wyn Jones
Download or read book Music in Eighteenth-Century Britain written by David Wyn Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by some of the leading scholars in the field looks at various aspects of musical life in eighteenth-century Britain. The significant roles played by institutions such as the Freemasons and foreign embassy chapels in promoting music making and introducing foreign styles to English music are examined, as well as the influence exerted by individuals, both foreign and British. The book covers the spectrum of British music, both sacred and secular, and both cosmopolitan and provincial. In doing so it helps to redress the picture of eighteenth-century British music which has previously portrayed Handel and London as its primary constituents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book addresses the relationship between music and cultural history in Ireland. It variously identifies and examines the development of music as an outgrowth of extra-musical concepts and socio-cultural entities, including celticism (in pre-christian and early christian Ireland), the ideology of ethnic culture, education, nationalism, religion, the composer in modern Ireland and the impact of music on the Irish literary imagination. Throughout the book, an abiding concern with music as the expression of political, social and religious norms of cultural development in Ireland affords thematic coherence to the essays as a whole." "As with the preceding volumes in the series, Music and Irish Cultural History breaks new ground in the cultivation of musicology in Ireland. In particular, it serves as a stimulus to the better understanding of music as a vital preoccupation of the Irish Mind."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Gregorian Chant for Church and School written by Mary Antonine Goodchild and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Sister Mary Antonine Goodchild, O.P. What a wonderful find this is: an ideal textbook on chant for junior high, high school, or really any age. It is mercifully free of verbiage or exaggerated detail. It is short and completely clear on all aspects of learning to chant (notes, rhythm, Latin, style), and it contains a vast amount of the basic repertoire, in neumes and with English translations. It even has study questions! Many of us have wished that such a book would be written. It took Fr. Samuel Weber to point out that such a book already exists, and now, praise be to God, it is in print again. As the title says, it is the perfect text for Church and school. It came out in 1944 but it isn't in the slightest bit dated. This is priced for mass distribution.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Gregorian Chant by : Richard L. Crocker
Download or read book An Introduction to Gregorian Chant written by Richard L. Crocker and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard L. Crocker offers in this book and its accompanying compact disc an introduction to the history and meaning of the Gregorian chant. He explains how Gregorian chant began, what functions and meanings it had over time, who heard it and where, and how it was composed, learned, written down and handed on. Crocker explains Gregorian chant and its functions within modern catholic liturgy as well as its position outside this liturgy, where the modern listener may hear it just as music. He describes the origins of the chant in the early Middle Ages, details its medieval development and use, and considers how it survived without, and later with, musical notation. The author probes the paradoxical position of the chant in monastic life -- serving as an expression of liturgical fellowship on the one hand and as the medium of solitary mystic ascent on the other. The book also includes a detailed commentary on each of twenty-six complete chants performed by the Orlando Consort and by the author on the accompanying compact disc. --From publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamentals of Gregorian Chant: A Simple Exposition of the Solesmes, Principles Founded Mainly on "Le Nombre Musical Gregorien" Of Dom Andre Mocquereau The terms Gregorian Chant Plainchant Plainsong Liturgical Chant Cantus Planus and other similar appellations, denote that universal liturgical song of the Latin Church, from the first centuries to the present time. It is the only liturgical music of the Roman Church, as it is the only music sung at the altar. While Classical Polyphony and the music of other great schools of Church Music are permitted, the Chant remains the true Song of the Latin Church. The Latin term, Cantus Planus refers to the ancient mode of execution, since the difference in the duration of the single notes of the (plainchant' was not so great as in Figured Music. According to an author of the 13th Century, Elias Salomon It is a music sung on one plane, and no part of it is to be quicker than the other which simply means that each note is equal.
