Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Masonry in Britain MY object in the following pages has been to describe briefly the origin and development of the art and craft of masonry in Britain, especially during the earlier years of its history. Volumes innumerable dealing with the history of architecture (as distinct from masonry) are in circulation. Especially is this the case with the period of the Renaissance, including the era covered by the famous works of Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, and their contemporaries and successors. Pre cisely for that reason this remarkable period in the history of British architecture has, in this volume, been dealt with more briefly than its importance would otherwise warrant. My purpose has rather been to deal with the social life and work of British masons during that period when architecture had not yet developed into a distinct calling - when the master masons of the guild designed as well as superintended the work of their fellow-craftsmen. Moreover, I have sought to relate the history of masonry from the point of view of the artificer and craftsman rather than from the more theoretic standpoint of the architect or designer. Book excerpt: A stonemason's story of the building of Britain: part archaeological history, part deeply personal insight into an ancient craft. In his thirty-year career, stonemason Andrew Ziminski has worked on many of our greatest monuments. From Neolithic monoliths to Roman baths and temples, from the tower of Salisbury Cathedral to the engine houses, mills and aqueducts of the Industrial Revolution and beyond, The Stonemason is his very personal history of how Britain was built - from the inside out. Stone by different stone, culture by different culture, Andrew Ziminski (with his faithful whippet in tow) takes us on an unforgettable journey by river, road and sea through our countryside showing how the making of Britain's buildings offers an unexpected and new version of our island story. 'My school history lessons were focused around flat pages of facts, events and royal personalities, but for me it was the material aspects of the past, the tangible remnants left behind that were thrilling, and that it was these buildings and places, and learning how they worked, that really brought the past alive.'

Although Masonry dates from the Middle Ages, its influence in art and architecture reached its peak in the neoclassical architecture of the 18th century. Architectural history professor Curl (Leicester Polytechnic, England) also looks at the way Masonic ideas have permeated other art forms from literature to the performing arts. The 190 exceptional illustrations (including 11 color plates) are accompanied by detailed, informative captions, and a glossary of terms explains the complex ideas and iconography of Freemasonry. Book excerpt: Insiders call it the Craft. Discover the fascinating true story of one of the most influential and misunderstood secret brotherhoods in modern society. Founded in London in 1717 as a way of binding men in fellowship, Freemasonry proved so addictive that within two decades it had spread across the globe. Masonic influence became pervasive. Under George Washington, the Craft became a creed for the new American nation. Masonic networks held the British empire together. Under Napoleon, the Craft became a tool of authoritarianism and then a cover for revolutionary conspiracy. Both the Mormon Church and the Sicilian mafia owe their origins to Freemasonry. Yet the Masons were as feared as they were influential. In the eyes of the Catholic Church, Freemasonry has always been a den of devil-worshippers. For Hitler, Mussolini and Franco, the Lodges spread the diseases of pacifism, socialism and Jewish influence, so had to be crushed. Freemasonry's story yokes together Winston Churchill and Walt Disney; Wolfgang Mozart and Shaquille O'Neal; Benjamin Franklin and Buzz Aldrin; Rudyard Kipling and 'Buffalo Bill' Cody; Duke Ellington and the Duke of Wellington. John Dickie's The Craft is an enthralling exploration of a the world's most famous and misunderstood secret brotherhood, a movement that not only helped to forge modern society, but has substantial contemporary influence, with 400,000 members in Britain, over a million in the USA, and around six million across the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a new edition of David Stevenson's classic account of the origins of Freemasonry, a brotherhood of men bound together by secret initiatives, rituals and modes of identification with ideals of fraternity, equality, toleration and reason. Beginning in Britain, Freemasonry swept across Europe in the mid-eighteenth century in astonishing fashion--yet its origins are still hotly debated today. The prevailing assumption has been that it emerged in England around 1700, but David Stevenson demonstrates that the real origins of modern Freemasonry lie in Scotland around 1600, when the system of lodges was created by stonemasons with rituals and secrets blending medieval mythology with Renaissance and seventeenth-century history. This fascinating work of historical detection will be essential reading for anyone interested in Renaissance and seventeenth-century history, for freemasons themselves, and for those readers captivated by the secret societies at the heart of the bestselling The Da Vinci Code. David Stevenson is Emeritus Professor of Scottish History at the University of St. Andrews. His many previous publications include The Scottish Revolution, 1637-1644; Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Scotland, 1644-1651; and The First Freemasons; Scotland, Early Lodges and their Members.
