Book excerpt: Early twentieth-century art and art practice in Britain and the United States were, Janet Wolff asserts, marginalized by critics and historians in very similar ways after the rise of post-Cubist modern art. In a masterly book on the sociology of modernism, Wolff explores work that was primarily realist and figurative and investigates the social, institutional, political, and aesthetic processes by which that art fell by the wayside in the postwar period. Throughout, she shows that questions of gender and ethnicity play an important role in critical, curatorial, and historical evaluations. For example, Wolff finds that the work of the artists central to the development of the Whitney Museum was relegated to a secondary status in the postwar period, when realism was labeled "feminine" in contrast to the aggressive masculinity of abstract expressionism. The three key periods considered in AngloModern are the early twentieth century, when modernist art and existing and new realist traditions coexisted in a certain tension; the postwar period, in which modernism claimed superiority over realism; and the late twentieth century, when a retrieval of the realist and figurative traditions seemed to occur. Wolff concludes by considering this re-emergence, as well as the limitations of earlier discussions of the struggles of realist and figurative art to endure the currents of modernism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning, full-color volume that examines 82 pieces in the University of Rochester Memorial Art Gallery's American collection and their connections to American history, culture, literature, and politics. Seeing America is the first-ever catalog of the University of Rochester Memorial Art Gallery's American collection. Founded in 1913, the Memorial Art Gallery was created in conjunction with the University of Rochester so that it would function within a scholarly milieu, yet at the same time perform service as a community museum. From its conception it has been an ardent advocate for American art, which so many counterpart institutions snubbed untilat least the 1930s, and more often until well after World War II, in favor of European and Asian art. The 336-page, full-color volume examines 82 objects and their connections to American history, culture, literature and politics. The 73 articles present a running commentary on each piece by knowledgeable and thoughtful contemporary scholars and artists writing with expertise and insight, ultimately presenting a new and deeper understanding that enhances the reader/viewer's appreciation of the work. The tour ranges from Colonial times to the twenty-first century, from Maine to Florida to the far West, from mighty historical subjects to intimate byways, from august figures and events to the humblest and most anonymous. The diversity of American experience on display here reminds us that the best American art is inextricably bound up with the essential truths of American experience.

There seems to be little doubt that aesthetic theory ought to be of interest to the study of visual culture. For one thing, aesthetic vocabulary has far from vanished from contemporary debates on the nature of our visual experiences and its various shapes, a fact especially pertinent where dissatisfaction with vulgar value relativism prevails. Besides, the very question—ubiquitous in the debates on visual culture—of what is natural and what is acquired in our visual experiences has been a topic in aesthetics at least since the Enlightenment. And last but not least, despite attempts to study visual culture without employing the concept of art, there is no prospect of this central subject of aesthetic theory ebbing away from visual studies. The essays compiled in this volume show a variety of points of intersection and involvement between aesthetics and visual studies; some consider the future of visual art, some the conditions and characteristics of contemporary visual aesthetic experience, while others take on the difficult question of the relation between visual representation and reality. What unites them is their authors’ willingness to think about contemporary visual culture in the conceptual frame of aesthetics. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of philosophical aesthetics, art history, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Austerity Baby might best be described as an ‘oblique memoir’. Janet Wolff’s fascinating volume is a family history – but one that is digressive and consistently surprising. The central underlying and repeated themes of the book are exile and displacement; lives (and deaths) during the Third Reich; mother-daughter and sibling relationships; the generational transmission of trauma and experience; transatlantic reflections; and the struggle for creative expression. Stories mobilised, and people encountered, in the course of the narrative include: the internment of aliens in Britain during the Second World War; cultural life in Rochester, New York, in the 1920s; the social and personal meanings of colour(s); the industrialist and philanthropist, Henry Simon of Manchester, including his relationship with the Norwegian explorer, Fridtjof Nansen; the liberal British campaigner and MP of the 1940s, Eleanor Rathbone; reflections on the lives and images of spinsters. The text is supplemented and interrupted throughout by images (photographs, paintings, facsimile documents), some of which serve to illustrate the story, others engaging indirectly with the written word.

Book excerpt: The forty writers in this book, all prominent poets and novelists, were asked to select a work of art from the University of Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery and respond to it with a poem, short story or essay. The writers include Poet Laureates, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners, New York State Poets and MacArthur Fellows. Their works range from the gritty "hour of charcoal and amber" in Kate Braverman's response to Douglas Gorsline's 1942 painting Bar Scene, to a delightful short story by Tom Gavin based upon Winslow Homer's magnificent painting The Artist's Studio in an Afternoon Fog. A notable group of nineteenth-century American landscape paintings caught the attention of a number of writers, while the poet John Ashbery found the contemporary landscape painting of Jane Freilicher to be a "continual joie de vivre." Other contributors include Andrea Barrett, National Book Award Winner for Fiction in 1996; Hayden Carruth, National Book Award Winner for Poetry in 1996; Anthony Hecht, Chancellor Emeritus of the Academy of American Poets; and Joanna Scott, recipient of the Pushcart Prize and the Lannan Literary Award. With imagination and originality, these writers have recreated the works of art and enable us to see anew many of the treasures in the collections of the Memorial Art Gallery. Grant Holcomb is the Director of the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craft is resurgent. More people are buying craft; more money is being spent on craft products than ever before. This book centres craft as a creative industry, illuminating the experiences of those working in and around craft, particularly people from marginalised groups. Shining a light on inequalities around craft work, the author examines the lived experiences of women makers of colour in the professional craft sector. Experiences of racism and microaggressions at all stages of their craft career are analysed. The author draws on innovative empirical research carried out in the UK and Australia, two countries where the resurgence in craft is apparent, yet professional craft practice is dominated by the white and relatively privileged. In interrogating hierarchies of expertise and cultural value in craft, the author employs case studies from community crafts and social enterprises. The result is a book of interest to scholars at the intersections of the creative and cultural industries, the creative economy and inequalities at work.
