Book excerpt: Apply Tao principles and active meditation to resistance training to transform tension into strength! Your body's design has been honed over millions of years. It has its own inherent wisdom, and it knows what it needs and how to survive. Our modern lifestyle has undermined that wisdom. The result? Exhaustion, anxiety, fatigue, tension, pain, even sickness. The Art of Strength: Sculpt the Body Train the Mind is a Book/3D-Video Learning System that gives you a foundational understanding of how your energy is motivated-and an approach to accessing and channeling that energy to achieve your full strength. Based in Tao theory and practiced in your workouts, this is the how-to for living relaxed on the inside and strong on the outside. Aided by 15 video tutorials, readers will gain a comprehensive philosophy on how energy optimally flows through the body and how tension obscures that flow. While new fitness trends emerge from one week to the next, The Art of Strength offers a far more integrated approach: deep insight into Eastern thought coupled with a self-analysis system and physical fitness workout routine which integrate for a complete mind-body wellness experience. This innovative combination of in-depth book content and 3D animation will guide readers to the emotional root of physical tension. A 3D avatar and live video model demonstrate internal and external energy movement, while practical Tao principles are explained and related to workout challenges. The Art of Strength shares the nuts and bolts of the BodyLogos(R) practice to offer you an understanding of your own blocks to living the power of your intention. The Modern Art and Science of Mobility is a striking visual guide to releasing muscle tension and activating muscles for functional motion. It goes beyond traditional training methods that focus on performance and aesthetics and asks these simple questions: Are you truly reaping the full benefits of training if it does not include mobility exercises? Why are the vast majority of people, even the most athletic individuals, unable to perform basic motor tasks without pain or difficulty? Why are physically active people still dealing with lack of mobility and chronic injury? Whether you are a casual exerciser or an elite athlete, you will learn how to preserve and maintain your body with over 300 exercises designed to improve mobility, facilitate recovery, reduce pain, and activate muscles. Utilize the self-tests to assess your current level of mobility, and then choose from over 50 prescriptive training routines that can be used as is or customized to target specific functional chains. You’ll find exercise recommendations based on body region, activity, and primary goal, and you’ll learn to incorporate a variety of techniques and popular equipment, including resistance bands, foam rollers, massage balls, and stability balls. The Modern Art and Science of Mobility provides a stunning visual presentation with over 1,200 photos and 100 original illustrations by Stéphane Ganneau. His illustrations highlight the muscles with precision, and his avant-garde style and the harmony of colors give this book a unique graphic signature. Mobility is the foundation for training your best and feeling your best. The Modern Art and Science of Mobility will help you do just that by helping you to alleviate pain, improve posture, and release muscle tension for a more comfortable and enjoyable quality of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although gym membership is on the increase, the way people actually exercise in the gym is rarely correct and frequently causes injury. Activities that should be pleasurable and fulfilling often end up being frustrating, can cause injury or are simply regarded as boring. Often the desired effects are not achieved due to bad technique. 'Master the Art of Working Out' teaches us how to approach our gym workout in a new and refreshing way. We are encouraged to look at working out as an art rather than just a means to an end. Balk and Shields have developed a way of improving a gym workout using the principles of the Alexander Technique. This simple method promotes coordination, balance, posture, the importance of the relationship between the head neck and back, body awareness and efficient body use. The book teaches that if you focus on what you are doing and all these things are done properly, then the workout will achieve the desired effect. The author look at all aspects of gym exercise including resistance training, using gym machines, fitness classes including aerobics, step, pilates, yoga and Tai chi. The book has illustrations showing the wrong and right technique.

Book excerpt: The Happy Body Program has been tremendously successful, giving thousands of clients the tools to be strong, fit and energetic at any age. Yet it asks people to change, and true change takes grit. It takes a constant, ever-renewing commitment and motivation to make the difficult choice that leads to success. Most programs ignore the fact that we are emotional beings—the irrational side of the brain exerts a strong influence on what we do. While The Happy Body Program equips you with everything you need to know to succeed, it does not acknowledge the gaps where you know the right thing to do but still don’t do it. The right words at the right time, spoken for the right person, can do magic. This vulnerability is what I Got This addresses, providing a rich array of stories, lectures and poems to cultivate the readiness that sparks spontaneous transformation. This is the book that supports you when your willpower is low, inspiring you to never give up, to keep going for another day. And another. And another. Until you become a source of inspiration yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are interested in practicing a martial art for health, this anthology is highly practical for this purpose. The content will inspire readers to adapt ways to enrich their martial art practice to reach a higher standard of health. Whenever considering health, one’s diet should be a priority. The chapter by Roberto Nurchis shows how the kind of foods ingested have a negative or a positive influence on martial performance. General conditioning exercise are illustrated in Oga-Baldwin’s chapter. These exercise are in line with traditional qigong/stretching exercises. Netherton and Durstine’s chapter addresses the sports-medicine views of the physiology of warm-up exercises. The authors examine changes in blood flow and body temperature and the impact of these changes on muscle tissue as an individual goes through the warm-up process. Porta and McCabe show a number of supplementary weight training practices derived from Miyagi Chojun in Okinawa. These exercises are designed to strengthen bodies and maintain overall flexibility to properly perform the techniques. Julio Anta looks to ancient Shaolin Temple physical conditioning traditions for inspiration. His chapter introduces iron ring and hard qigong exercises that are based on fundamental principles also found in modern training methods, such as weightlifting. The chapters by Smith, Bradley, and Mancuso all deal with a variety of breathing techniques necessary for energy and stamina. Some breathing methods are definitely more appropriate for the fighting arts, while other methods are more applicable as adjuncts to various physical and mental disciplines. While Bradley looks to a particular Korean system and Mancuso has a focus on Chinese practices, Smith utilizes an in depth multi-cultural approach. Niiler’s chapter concerns the potential for leg injuries from jumping kicks. He uses examples of Chinese wushu flying kicks, but the scientific information and advice he provides will benefit anyone who practices jumping maneuvers. Last but not least are two very valuable chapters by Allen Pittman, one chapter dealing with the legs and the other with the trunk. The cross-cultural and scientific points of view he presents are extremely insightful. They are not only conducive for superb body conditioning, but will certainly lead to improved combative technique. Pittman’s chapters along with the other authors are useful and effective for modern practitioners of martial arts.
