Book Synopsis Being Naked--Playing Dead by : Alan Woods
Download or read book Being Naked--Playing Dead written by Alan Woods and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Greenaway has an international reputation as one of the most innovative, stylish and intelligent of contemporary film-makers. His eight feature films, from The Draughtsman's Contract to The Pillow Book, have variously, and sometimes simultaneously, prompted controversy, infamy, acclaim and delight. However, Greenaway is an artist whose work also includes painting; collage; experimental TV; the novel/opera Rosa; and numerous exhibitions/installations, including The Stairs, a continuing series of ten projects in ten cities exploring the basic components of cinema. Being Naked Playing Dead explores the complete oeuvre, but centres firmly on Greenaway's insistence that his is 'a cinema of ideas not plots'. Each film is discussed within a thematic analysis of the full range of Greenaway's output and the wider contexts within which it is conceived. In conclusion there are two extended interviews, making this book essential reading for all Greenaway enthusiasts.
Book Synopsis Why is Art Full of Naked People? by : Susie Hodge
Download or read book Why is Art Full of Naked People? written by Susie Hodge and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoughtful introduction to art and its interpretation for children, with a sense of humor Why is Art Full of Naked People? is an irreverent and informative primer that asks tricky questions about what makes art art. What is with all the fruit? Why is art so weird nowadays? There are questions about how art views the world, from cave paintings through to Cubism, from the Renaissance to contemporary art, questions about different genres, including still-life painting, landscapes and portraits, and questions about the role and value of art in the past and today. Artists ask questions when they make art and viewers ask questions when they look at art; this book provides an engaging way for young people to explore asking and answering questions for themselves. The book is structured around twenty-two questions, each one tackled over two spreads. Through this provocative approach it offers an introduction to art history and a toolkit to enable young people to feel confident asking questions, searching for answers, and “reading” art for themselves.
Book Synopsis The Renaissance Nude by : Thomas Kren
Download or read book The Renaissance Nude written by Thomas Kren and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gloriously illustrated examination of the origins and development of the nude as an artistic subject in Renaissance Europe Reflecting an era when Europe looked to both the classical past and a global future, this volume explores the emergence and acceptance of the nude as an artistic subject. It engages with the numerous and complex connotations of the human body in more than 250 artworks by the greatest masters of the Renaissance. Paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, and book illustrations reveal private, sometimes shocking, preoccupations as well as surprising public beliefs—the Age of Humanism from an entirely new perspective. This book presents works by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, and Martin Schongauer in the north and Donatello, Raphael, and Giorgione in the south; it also introduces names that deserve to be known better. A publication this rich in scholarship could only be produced by a variety of expert scholars; the sixteen contributors are preeminent in their fields and wide-ranging in their knowledge and curiosity. The structure of the volume—essays alternating with shorter texts on individual artworks—permits studies both broad and granular. From the religious to the magical and the poetic to the erotic, encompassing male and female, infancy, youth, and old age, The Renaissance Nude examines in a profound way what it is to be human.

Download or read book The Nude written by Richard Leppert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nude explores some of the principal ways that paintings of the nude function in the conflicted terrain of culture and society in Europe and America from the fifteenth through twentieth centuries, as set against questions about human sexuality that emerge around differences of class, gender, age, and race. Author Richard Leppert relates the visual history of how the naked body intersects with the foundational characteristics of what it is to be human, measured against a range of basic emotions (happiness, delight, and desire; fear, anxiety, and abjection) and read in the context of changing social and cultural realities. The bodies comprising the Western nude are variously pleasured or tormented, ecstatic or bored, pleased or horrified. In short, as this volume amply demonstrates, the nude in Western art is a terrain on whose surface is written a summation of Western history: its glory but also its degradation.
Book Synopsis The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf by : Molly Harper
Download or read book The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf written by Molly Harper and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2021-02-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A werewolf alpha must protect her pack from outsiders and rivals—all while avoiding falling for a snooping human—in this second in a witty and sexy paranormal romance series from the author of the Nice Girls series. Generations of werewolves have been secretly residing in a secluded valley a stone’s throw from Grundy, Alaska. So when a snooping Outsider comes to Grundy to investigate rumors of lycanthropic shenanigans in the area, the valley’s pack alpha, Maggie Graham, resolves to chase him away, even if doing so takes a quick bite on the butt. What a pity that researcher Nick Thatcher turns out to be so drool-worthy, and that his kisses make Maggie want to sit up and beg. Maggie just can’t seem to convince Nick to leave…and even worse, she can’t convince herself to stay away from him. Cross-species dating is problem enough for a harried alpha female, but on top of that, a rival group of werewolves is trying to move into the valley. With interpack war threatening, Maggie can’t afford to be distracted. Combining romance and a career can be tough for anyone; for a werewolf in love with a human, it may be disastrous.
Download or read book White on White written by Aysegül Savas and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "marvelous" (Lauren Groff) and "gentle, mysterious and profound” (Marina Abramović) novel about a woman who has come undone. A student moves to the city to research Gothic nudes, renting an apartment from a painter, Agnes, who lives in another town with her husband. One day, Agnes arrives in the city and settles into the upstairs studio. In their meetings on the stairs, in the studio, at the corner café, the kitchen at dawn, Agnes tells stories of her youth, her family, her marriage, and ideas for her art - which is always just about to be created. As the months pass, it becomes clear that Agnes might not have a place to return to. The student is increasingly aware of Agnes's disintegration. Her stories are frenetic; her art scattered and unfinished, white paint on a white canvas. What emerges is the menacing sense that every life is always at the edge of disaster, no matter its seeming stability. Alongside the research into human figures, the student is learning, from a cool distance, about the narrow divide between happiness and resentment, creativity and madness, contentment and chaos. White on White is a sharp exploration of empathy and cruelty, and the stunning discovery of what it means to be truly vulnerable, and laid bare.
Download or read book Naked written by Betsy Franco and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jesse Lucas, a troubled, magnetic acting major, touches the sculpture Meditation in Stanford's Rodin Sculpture Garden, he burns his finger on the bronze. By the time he returns to the garden that night, an eighteen-year-old girl has emerged from the statue, naked and disoriented. It is 2008, yet her mind is swimming with vivid, fractured memories of her volatile past in nineteenth-century Paris--of serving as Rodin's muse, of her passionate affair with the acclaimed artist, and of her own creations. So begins Betsy Franco's extraordinary and imaginative novel, Naked. Stranded in the sculpture garden, Camille--or Cat, as she insists on being called--forms a deep bond with Jesse, who is soon leaving for college and is as lonely and disturbed as she. As Jesse encourages Cat to confront the sinister memories that afflict her, she helps him overcome the fury he has toward his abusive father and find peace within himself. Rich, inventive, and told with a compelling mix of grace and wry humor, Naked is a bold debut that explores love, loss, and the power of art, and brings to mind the magical realism found in The Time Traveler's Wife and Midnight in Paris.

Download or read book Naked Listening written by Alan Hundley and published by Booklocker.com. This book was released on 2018-11-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a college student in the early 1970s, I chose to step out of academia and into a yoga studio. I began the process of being aware that I was aware. I learned to meditate, to play music, to dance, and to sing. On the way I found that being present has much to offer if we simply listen and follow the true thread of the life we were meant to embody. Dancing to the beat of a different drum is not always easy. Going against the grain can be prickly and sometimes begs the question: Isn't there an easier solution? Through it all I learned that there are messengers around every corner, waiting to inform us of our true nature. For me these messengers were sometimes subtle, and at other times slapped me upside the head. In these pages I have given voice to some of my inner longing to be seen for who I am rather than what I do or how I wish to be seen. I had the understanding many years ago that fantasy and magical thinking are seductive and can lead to self-absorption, ego fixation and pretending to be someone other than who I am. So, who am I? That is always the question. Throughout these stories and poems my intention was to draw out what was within. Working as a massage therapist, yoga and tai chi teacher for over 40 years was not how I envisioned myself in my formative early adult life. But circumstance and serendipity are always offering an alternative for those with the eyes to see and the ears to hear. How easy to spend an entire life wondering where the pot of gold is and never realize that it is in the palm of your hand.

Book Synopsis You Are Eating an Orange. You Are Naked by : Sheung-King
Download or read book You Are Eating an Orange. You Are Naked written by Sheung-King and published by Book*hug Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Asian & Asian American Studies. Short Stories. A young translator living in Toronto frequently travels abroad-to Hong Kong, Macau, Prague, Tokyo-often with his unnamed lover. In restaurants and hotel rooms, the couple begin telling folk tales to each other, perhaps as a way to fill the undefined space between them. Theirs is a comic and enigmatic relationship in which emotions are often muted and sometimes masked by verbal play and philosophical questions, and further complicated by the woman's frequent unexplained disappearances. YOU ARE EATING AN ORANGE. YOU ARE NAKED. is an intimate novel of memory and longing that challenges Western tropes and Orientalism. Embracing the playful surrealism of Haruki Murakami and the atmospheric narratives of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai, Sheung-King's debut is at once lyrical and punctuated, and wholly unique, and marks the arrival of a bold new voice in Asian-Canadian literature. Sheung-King has written a wonderfully unexpected and maverick love story but also a novel of ideas that hopscotches between Toronto, Macau, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Prague. It is enchanting, funny, and a joy to read.-Kyo Maclear
