Book Synopsis Hoofprints on the Land by : Ilse Köhler-Rollefson
Download or read book Hoofprints on the Land written by Ilse Köhler-Rollefson and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for fans of English Pastoral and Wilding, Hoofprints on the Land shows that herding cultures are not a thing of the past but a regenerative model for our future. Hoofprints on the Land is a fascinating and lyrical book exploring the deep and ancient working partnerships between people and animals. UN advocate and camel conservationist Ilse Köhler-Rollefson writes a passionate rallying cry for those invisible and forgotten herding cultures that exist all over the world, and how by embracing these traditional nomadic practices, we can help restore and regenerate the Earth. Ilse has spent the last 30 years living with and studying the Raika camel herders in Rajasthan, India, and she shows how pastoralists can address many of the problems humanity faces. Whether it be sheep, cattle, reindeer, camels, alpacas, goats, or yaks—this ancient and natural means of keeping livestock challenges the myth that animal-free agriculture is the only way forward for a healthy planet. From the need to produce food more sustainably and equitably to the consequences of climate change, land degradation and loss of biodiversity, we can learn from pastoralists to help repair the human relationship with livestock to return to a model of intelligent cooperation rather than dominance. As Ilse writes: “Herding is therapy, not just for the planet, but also for our souls.”

Book Synopsis Radium of the Word by : Craig Dworkin
Download or read book Radium of the Word written by Craig Dworkin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With fresh insight and contemporary relevance, Radium of the Word argues that a study of the form of language yields meanings otherwise inaccessible through ordinary reading strategies. Attending to the forms of words rather than to their denotations, Craig Dworkin traces hidden networks across the surface of texts, examining how typography, and even individual letters and marks of punctuation, can reveal patterns that are significant without being symbolic—fully meaningful without communicating any preordained message. Radium of the Word takes its title from Mina Loy’s poem for Gertrude Stein, which hails her as the Madame “Curie / of the laboratory / of vocabulary.” In this spirit, Dworkin considers prose as a dynamic literary form, characterized by experimentation. Dworkin draws on examples from writers as diverse as Lyn Hejinian, William Faulkner, and Joseph Roth. He takes up the status of the proper name in Modernism, with examples from Stein, Loy, and Guillaume Apollinaire, and he offers in-depth analyses of individual authors from the counter-canon of the avant-garde, including P. Inman, Russell Atkins, N. H. Pritchard, and Andy Warhol. The result is an inspiring intervention in contemporary poetics.
Book Synopsis Feed the World: Birhan Woldu and Live Aid by : Oliver Harvey
Download or read book Feed the World: Birhan Woldu and Live Aid written by Oliver Harvey and published by Fox Chapel Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birhan Woldu became one of the most recognized faces and forms of the late 20th century after her skeletal image was broadcast at the end of Live Aid to publicize famine in Africa. Although Live Aid, led by musicians such as Bob Geldof and Bono, raised millions for famine relief, most people thought Birhan was dead - until, that is, she was 'rediscovered' by Canadian journalist Brian Stewart, who helped fund her schooling and helped change her life. Twenty years later, Birhan once again became a symbol of hope for Africa when she appeared on stage at Live 8 with Madonna and Geldof in front of millions. But how did she get to that point? Journalist Oliver Harvey tells Birhan's life story - from the days of famine and war in Ethiopia when her father literally carried Birhan and her sister on his shoulders more than 900 km on an epic journey to life, to Live Aid and the years of struggle between. This is a truly inspirational story of triumph over extreme adversity. The ongoing crisis in East Africa makes this book extremely topical and important. New Holland is donating proceeds from the book to Oxfam's DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal.

Book excerpt: The Aesthetic and Decadent Movement of the late 19th century spawned the idea of "Art for Art's Sake," challenged aesthetic standards and shocked the bourgeosie. From Walter Pater's study, "The Renaissance to Salome, the truly decadent collaboration between Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley, Karl Beckson has chosen a full spectrum of works that chronicle the British artistic achievement of the 1890s. In this revised edition of a classic anthology, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" has been included in its entirety; the bibliography has been completely updated; Professor Beckson's notes and commentary have been expanded from the first edition published in 1966. Book Synopsis The Copper Scroll Project by : Shelley Neese
Download or read book The Copper Scroll Project written by Shelley Neese and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history behind the Copper Scroll and the true story of Jim Barfield’s quest for its treasure. Whether the objects are of legend or history, certain ancient mysteries arrest the imaginations of every generation. These antiquities refuse to be forgotten by the human spirit—hidden sufficiently to evade discovery, but historically prominent enough to leave a smattering of clues. Many explorers have fallen prey to fortune’s siren call, spending their lifetimes searching for the artifacts that promise to alter human history. The Copper Scroll Project is a relative newcomer to the modern treasure hunt. Part of the Dead Sea Scrolls collection, the Copper Scroll is unlike any of the leather and papyrus documents, though not simply for its copper plates. The relic reads like a coded map, listing dozens of hiding spots where tithes and vessels thought to be secreted from the Jewish Temple were stored for safekeeping. More than fifty years after archaeologists found this unique artifact in a cave near Qumran, four adventurers have dared to chase after the scroll’s priceless relics. “A unique introduction not only to a famous biblical mystery but to the world of American Christian interest in Israel, which remains opaque or bewildering to many outsiders, and is often caricatured.”—Matti Friedman, author of The Aleppo Codex “Equal parts mystery, treasure hunt and erudite elucidation of biblical history.”—Chanan Tigay, author of The Last Moses “Neese’s narrative pacing and story-telling is masterful. She gets the political and religious nuances of contemporary Israel.”—Elliot Jager, Jerusalem-based author and former editorial page editor at The Jerusalem Post
Download or read book Deluge written by Luther Butler and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-10-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DELUGE is a continuation of the two part Biblical series following DEATH RODE A WHITE HORSE. Noah, the descendent of Adam and Eve, has built the Ark. A user of alcoholic drinks, the sinful citizens of Ur fail to take his message seriously. The trickster, Lucifer, wants to make Creator angry enough to make him destroy his own people. Ham, third son of Noah, saves Jezebel from the flood. When the two have a son, Canaan, Noah puts a curse on the lad. Also saved from drowning are the descendents of ben-Able who are high in the Kargos Mountains with their animals. The current ben-Able risks the wrath of his people by forcing them to go higher up the mountain than the people and animals can safely go. Eventually ben-Able and his people join up with Hams family and head for Canaan to plant Creators people near the holy city of Jerusalem. DELUGE brings the Biblical characters into sometime hilarious situations when Lucifer and Creator and their followers pit their wits against each other. Lucifer not only destroys Creators people, but the flood reaches to Canaan and destroys Lucifers people. Lucifer is forced to save Ham in order to have people descending from Jezebel. While Lucifer takes the bodies of fish, fowl, and animals to save Ham and Jezebel, Creator and Gabriel soar above the flood in their chariot. This version of the Bible has a science fiction affect mixed with comedy, tragedy, and some very serious moments.
