Book excerpt: By the year 1900, architect Andrew Taylor had designed Bank of Montreal branches across the continent and much of McGill University, helped found the McGill School of Architecture, and played a critical role in creating the first professional organization for Quebec architects. In The Architecture of Andrew Thomas Taylor, Susan Wagg presents a groundbreaking study of the life and work of a major figure in nineteenth-century Canadian architecture. Born in Edinburgh and trained in Scotland and England, Taylor spent two decades in Canada between 1883 and 1904, designing some of Montreal's most iconic landmarks. Wagg places his career amidst the wealth of opportunities provided by Canada's high society and captains of industry. Taylor's Canadian relatives, Montreal's powerful Redpath family, brought him into contact with the small group of financiers and entrepreneurs who controlled Canada's destiny. With the support of such influential patrons as Sir William Macdonald and the Bank of Montreal, Taylor successfully confronted dramatic changes in building technology as iron and steel were increasingly used and buildings grew ever taller. He innovatively adapted English and American styles to the Canadian environment, designing structures distinctively suited to their place in history. Positioning Taylor's extensive designs within the context of his time, The Architecture of Andrew Thomas Taylor firmly establishes his work as a cornerstone of Canadian architecture.

Montreal’s Square Mile chronicles the history of the neighbourhood, from its origins to its decline, including the diverse and far-reaching sources of its making and its twentieth-century transformations. Spanning the interconnected worlds of family and home life, business and high politics, architecture and urban redevelopment, this interdisciplinary and richly illustrated volume presents a new account of the Square Mile’s history and an investigation of the neighbourhood’s impact beyond the immediate urban environment.

Book excerpt: Canada is a country of massive size, of diverse geographical features and an equally diverse population—all features that are magnificently reflected in its architecture. In this book, Rhodri Windsor Liscombe and Michelangelo Sabatino offer a richly informative history of Canadian architecture that celebrates and explores the country’s many contributions to the spread of architectural modernity in the Americas. A distinct Canadian design attitude coalesced during the twentieth century, one informed by a liberal, hybrid, and pragmatic mindset intent less upon the dogma of architectural language and more on thinking about the formation of inclusive spaces and places. Taking a fresh perspective on design production, they map the unfolding of architectural modernity across the country, from the completion of the transcontinental railway in the late 1880s through to the present. Along the way they discuss architecture within the broader contexts of political, industrial, and sociocultural evolution; the urban-suburban expansion; and new building technologies. Examining the works of architects and firms such as ARCOP, Eric Arthur, Ernest Cormier, Brigitte Shim, and Howard Sutcliffe, this book brings Canadian architecture chronologically and thematically to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to dissertations and theses is becoming increasingly easier as a result of digitalization projects such as UMI's Current Research, which at the present time provides full-text access to dissertations published after 1996. However, access to retrospective titles continues to prove difficult. This bibliography addresses some of the limitations of Dissertation Abstracts, especially in uncovering works below the doctoral level and those produced in Canada's French-language universities. While Canadian research is accessible by title and keyword through the National Library of Canada's checklists, covering the period from 1821 onwards, there are few existing publications that provide abstracts. Existing annotated bibliographies in the field of fine arts in Canada merely cover dissertations written prior to 1981. This book identifies 1765 theses or dissertations dealing with Canadian art or built architecture in Canada, excluding studio projects and works on landscape architecture. Chronologically, these works cover a time span from 1924 to 1999. The bibliography is divided into 25 sections, 13 dealing with art and 12 dealing with architecture. Works are listed in the category considered most descriptive of content, with cross-references to other relevant sections. Author, institution, and detailed subject indexes are provided, along with order numbers where available. All abstracts are in English, although approximately 40 percent of the works included were written in French, with a few in other languages. A specialized but needed resource reference work for librarians, art and architecture historians, and students of Canadian art and architecture.
