Book excerpt: "It is not enough to recite the Apostles' Creed; one must enter into its statements enquiringly, reflectively, critically." Today's Christian may repeat the Apostles' Creed Sunday after Sunday; but couched as it s in archaic language, its meaning is often lost to him. "In spite of that," says Dr. Pennenberg, "we can still repeat the creed in church without doing violence to our personal sincerity as long as we are able to adhere to the intention behind its statements." Book Synopsis The Apostles' Creed by : Jonathan F. Bayes
Download or read book The Apostles' Creed written by Jonathan F. Bayes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries churches all over the world have confessed their faith in the words of The Apostle's Creed. The Creed is a brilliant summary of the essence of biblical truth. But, as this book shows, the Creed is not just a dry statement of abstract doctrines. It is an expression of passion. As they composed the Creed, the earliest Christians were giving voice to their passion for the God who has made himself known in the person of Jesus Christ. The Creed stands as an invitation to believers of every generation to that same passionate commitment which has marked our predecessors in the faith. This book expounds the Creed phrase by phrase, and seeks at every point to apply its teaching to the life of believers in the world of today. Taking the Creed as his starting point and framework, Jonathan Bayes presents a wide-ranging account of Christian theology. His reflections on the Creed lead to some challenging and stimulating meditations on various aspects of biblical teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostles' Creed is the oldest, most beautiful succinct summary of Christian beliefs. Though often recited in unison during worship services, the creed begins with the phrase "I believe," making it a deeply personal profession of faith. But when was the last time you examined it closely? In Affirming the Apostles' Creed, an excerpt from Growing in Christ, noted Bible scholar and author J. I. Packer explains the meaning and implications of each phrase of this great creed. Each concise chapter serves as an invitation to dive further into the creed-and as a result, into the essentials of the Christian faith-by concluding with discussion questions and Bible passages for further study.
Book Synopsis Relationality and the Concept of God by : Henry Jansen
Download or read book Relationality and the Concept of God written by Henry Jansen and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1995 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical theism, the dominant tradition in Christian theology, has stressed the metaphysical concept of God, i.e., God's ontological transcendence and independence from the world. In this century, however, this concept of God has increasingly met with criticism. On the basis of the Bible and new philosophical considerations, it is argued that a relational concept of God better answers the fundamental concerns of the Christian faith. In this book the author investigates the questions of whether one can conceive of God apart from the metaphysical attributes and whether reflection on the biblical depiction of God leads necessarily to a relational concept of God. The author explores the questions by examining the relational concepts of God found in two contemporary German theologians, Jurgen Moltmann and Wolfhart Pannenberg, and uses the divine attribute of immutability as a focus for the discussion. He argues that the relational concept of God presupposes another metaphysical conception of God, which raises problems as serious as those in classical theism, and that the Bible itself, because of its nature as a narrative text, is ambiguous in many respects as far as God is concerned. A truly Christian doctrine of God must take both the metaphysical and relational aspects of God into account."
Download or read book Heretics written by Gerd Ludemann and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the commonly held view, early Christianity was a time of great harmony, and heresy emerged only at a later stage. To the contrary, Gerd Ludemann argues that the time from the first Christian communities to the end of the second century was defined by struggle by various groups for doctrinal authority. Drawing on a wealth of data, he asserts that the losers in this struggle actually represented Christianity in its more authentic, original form. Orthodoxy has been defined by the victors in this struggle and it is they who subsequently silenced alternative views and labeled them heretical. Ludemann's findings are important as well as liberating for the understanding of both Christianity and the Bible. Readers will gain a new understanding of Jesus and the early church from this compelling and controversial book.
