Book Synopsis A Manual of American Literature by : Theodore Stanton
Download or read book A Manual of American Literature written by Theodore Stanton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1909 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prepared for publication as No. 4000, a "Memorial Volume," of the "Tauchnitz Edition." Perhaps it may be well to explain to American readers what the "Tauchnitz Edition" is and what a "Memorial Volume" is in this collection. The "Collection of British Authors," or, as it is more popularly known on the European Continent, the "Tauchnitz Edition," was instituted in 1841, at Leipsic, by one of the most distinguished of German publishers, the late Baron Bernhard Tauchnitz, whose son is now at the head of the house. The father records that he was "incited to the undertaking by the high opinion and enthusiastic fondness which I have ever entertained for English literature: a literature springing from the selfsame root as the literature of Germany, and cultivated in the beginning by the same Saxon race.... As a German-Saxon it gave me particular pleasure to promote the literary interest of my Anglo-Saxon cousins, by rendering English literature as universally known as possible beyond the limits of the British Empire." In another place, Baron Tauchnitz describes "the mission" of his Collection to be the "spreading and strengthening the love for English literature outside of England and her Colonies."

This is NOT a photocopy of the original work, but a completely new, re-type set edition. While a few editorial changes have been made the work is for the most part as it was when first published. The largest change is the addenda that was at the end of the 4th edition. The addenda was a collection of corrections and additions to the work. We have incorporated the corrections and additions into the work itself removing the need for the addenda. DON'T FORGET: This is a FOUR book set with each book sold separately. The ISBNs are: 1887560319, 1887560793, 1887560424 & 1887560068.

Book Synopsis Judson of Burma by : Alfred Mathieson
Download or read book Judson of Burma written by Alfred Mathieson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judson of Burma: The Heroic Pioneer Missionary to the Burmese, Who for the Welfare of Others Faced Every Peril and Dared Every Danger My deep admiration for Dr. Adoniram Judson, together with the fact that there was so little literature extant in Britain concerning this noble missionary, led me to undertake the task. I felt that this side the Atlantic there should be a far wider knowledge of the brave pioneer, who, amidst indescribable sufferings, heralded the unsearchable riches of Christ in Burma. Very much more could have been written from the mass of material at hand - gathered by the labour of others, to whom I am indebted - but circumstances over which I had no control enforced a limitation of the volume. My fervent hope is that the reading of the book will kindle missionary zeal, prove a stimulus to faith - as in my own life - and lead all who acknowledge Christ as Saviour and Lord to the determination to endure for Him even unto death. Book Synopsis A Handbook of Churches and Councils by : World Council of Churches
Download or read book A Handbook of Churches and Councils written by World Council of Churches and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been said-and rightly so-that the World Council of Churches (WCC) is first and foremost a fellowship of churches. This book is a vivid illustration of that reality. The descriptions, lists, statistical data, and other information presented in these pages give a striking picture of the extent and diversity of this fellowship. It encompasses a Christian population of some 590 million people, in close to 150 countries in all regions of the world, comprised of over 520,000 local congregations served by some 493,000 pastors and priests, as well as countless elders, teachers, members of parish councils, and others. A Handbook of Churches and Councils is not simply a handbook of the member churches of the WCC. At all levels-global, regional and sub-regional, national, and local-member churches of the WCC interact with other churches which, for various reasons, are not formally part of the Council's membership. By combining in one volume all the conciliar and confessional bodies and their membership, this book demonstrates concretely the reach of the ecumenical movement and also shows how much broader it is than the WCC alone. It serves to remind us that ownership of the movement rests not only with the WCC but with all the partners, and ultimately with God.
