Book excerpt: A modern approach to improving education uses the components of experimental scientific research practices based on objective data, dissemination of results, and the use of modern technologies. STEM education research is maturing and new tools and analysis techniques become available. As one example, eye tracking, the recording of persons’ eye movements, has been growing in popularity as it enables researchers to study learning materials’ effectiveness, problem solving, and even students’ approaches during experimentation. Eye movements, as captured using eye tracking, can reveal information about a student's attention and cognition on a process level, going well beyond classical product-based assessment techniques such as questionnaires or tests.

Book excerpt: For the first time in science education, the subject of multiple solution methods is explored in book form. While a multiple method teaching approach is utilized extensively in math education, there are very few journal articles and no texts written on this topic in science. Teaching multiple methods to science students in order to solve quantitative word problems is important for two reasons. First it challenges the practice by teachers that one specific method should be used when solving problems. Secondly, it calls into question the belief that multiple methods would confuse students and retard their learning. Using a case study approach and informed by research conducted by the author, this book claims that providing students with a choice of methods as well as requiring additional methods as a way to validate results can be beneficial to student learning. A close reading of the literature reveals that time spent on elucidating concepts rather than on algorithmic methodologies is a critical issue when trying to have students solve problems with understanding. It is argued that conceptual understanding can be enhanced through the use of multiple methods in an environment where students can compare, evaluate, and verbally discuss competing methodologies through the facilitation of the instructor. This book focuses on two very useful methods: proportional reasoning (PR) and dimensional analysis (DA). These two methods are important because they can be used to solve a large number of problems in all of the four academic sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science). This book concludes with a plan to integrate DA and PR into the academic science curriculum starting in late elementary school through to the introductory college level. A challenge is presented to teachers as well as to textbook writers who rely on the single-method paradigm to consider an alternative way to teach scientific problem solving.

Book excerpt: Teaching Chemistry in Higher Education celebrates the contributions of Professor Tina Overton to the scholarship and practice of teaching and learning in chemistry education. Leading educators in United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia—three countries where Tina has had enormous impact and influence—have contributed chapters on innovative approaches that are well-established in their own practice. Each chapter introduces the key education literature underpinning the approach being described. Rationales are discussed in the context of attributes and learning outcomes desirable in modern chemistry curricula. True to Tina’s personal philosophy, chapters offer pragmatic and useful guidance on the implementation of innovative teaching approaches, drawing from the authors’ experience of their own practice and evaluations of their implementation. Each chapter also offers key guidance points for implementation in readers’ own settings so as to maximise their adaptability. Chapters are supplemented with further reading and supplementary materials on the book’s website (overtonfestschrift.wordpress.com). Chapter topics include innovative approaches in facilitating group work, problem solving, context- and problem-based learning, embedding transferable skills, and laboratory education—all themes relating to the scholarly interests of Professor Tina Overton. About the Editors: Michael Seery is Professor of Chemistry Education at the University of Edinburgh, and is Editor of Chemistry Education Research and Practice. Book excerpt: Problem solving is central to the teaching and learning of chemistry at secondary, tertiary and post-tertiary levels of education, opening to students and professional chemists alike a whole new world for analysing data, looking for patterns and making deductions. As an important higher-order thinking skill, problem solving also constitutes a major research field in science education. Relevant education research is an ongoing process, with recent developments occurring not only in the area of quantitative/computational problems, but also in qualitative problem solving. The following situations are considered, some general, others with a focus on specific areas of chemistry: quantitative problems, qualitative reasoning, metacognition and resource activation, deconstructing the problem-solving process, an overview of the working memory hypothesis, reasoning with the electron-pushing formalism, scaffolding organic synthesis skills, spectroscopy for structural characterization in organic chemistry, enzyme kinetics, problem solving in the academic chemistry laboratory, chemistry problem-solving in context, team-based/active learning, technology for molecular representations, IR spectra simulation, and computational quantum chemistry tools. The book concludes with methodological and epistemological issues in problem solving research and other perspectives in problem solving in chemistry. With a foreword by George Bodner.

Furthermore, this book describes the current practice, the facilitators and barriers for implementing evidence-based simulation, and provides examples from real simulation practice in education, practice and research. Structured into three sections, the first delves into the different types of simulation and their applications within pharmacy curricula. From patient simulation to computer-based programs, this section highlights the diverse opportunities for experiential learning in pharmacy education. The next discusses the role of simulation in community and hospital pharmacy settings. This section emphasizes the importance of communication skills, patient care, and medication safety, demonstrating how simulation can contribute to improved practice and patient outcomes. The last section explores the use of simulation in drug development and research design. This section also examines the ethical considerations, data analysis, and reporting involved in simulation-based research. Comprehensive and practical, Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Pharmacy Education, Practice and Research is an essential resource for anyone interested in the expanding field of pharmacy simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry: The Study of Matter and Its Changes, Sixth Edition will provide the necessary practice, support and individualised instruction that ensures success in the General Chemistry course. This text provides the forum for problem solving and concept mastery of chemical phenomena that leads to proficiency and success in the General Chemistry course. This edition will continue a "molecular basis of chemistry" tradition, but in a manner that overtly and repeatedly reinforces the way properties at the molecular level are related to properties we observe at the macroscopic level. The unique "chemical tools" approach employed in this book provides a way of thinking that helps those students develop the ability to analyse and solve both mathematical and conceptual problems. This text follows the successful three-step approach described as "ANALYSIS," "SOLUTION" and "IS THE ANSWER REASONABLE?" This encourages the student to think about the problem before attempting to solve it, then working through the solution, and finally asking the important question "Does the answer make sense?" There are problem sets called "Bringing It Together" that contain problems which require students to bring together concepts from two or more of the preceding chapters. This reinforces learned concepts and builds concept mastery.

This book deals with the fundamental aspects of physical chemistry taught at the undergraduate level in chemistry and the engineering sciences in a compact and practice-oriented form. Numerous problems and detailed solutions offer the possibility of an in-depth reflection of topics like chemical thermodynamics and kinetics, atomic structure and spectroscopy. Every chapter starts with a recapitulation of important background information, before leading over to representative exercises and problems. Detailed descriptions systematically present and explain the solutions to the problems, so that readers can carefully check their own solutions and get clear-cut introductions on how to approach similar problems systematically. The book addresses students at the (upper) undergraduate level, as well as tutors and teachers. It is a rich source of exercises for exam preparation and can be used alongside classical textbooks. Furthermore it can serve teachers and tutors for the conception of their lessons. Its well-thought-through presentation, structure and design make the book appeal to everybody who wants to succeed with the physical chemistry lessons and exercises.
