Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Bible: Complete and How to Understand It, published by author Roswell Hitchcock in 1869, breaks down the verses of the Bible (more than 30,000) based on their meaning into 27 Books, 242 Chapters, and 2,369 Sections. Topics include Scripture, Jesus Christ, Miracles, the Hebrews, Civil and Social Law, Fallen Man, and Eschatology. It also contains Hitchcock's "Bible Name Dictionary," which describes more than 2,500 Bible and related names and their definitions. Verses are cataloged with like verses, and, though large, the book is extremely navigable. The Cosimo version is unabridged, including the original illustrations by Nast and Carpenter and Cruden's Complete Concordance to the Holy Scriptures; all in all, a unique collection. The Holy Bible: Complete and How to Understand It is a perfect tool for the serious Bible scholar and those who want to break the Bible down into its most essential parts. ROSWELL DWIGHT HITCHCOCK (1817-1887) was an American theologian and writer who graduated from Amherst in 1836 and studied at Andover theological seminary. Hitchcock was a professor at Bowdoin College in Maine and Union Theological Seminary in New York City and was also the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Exeter, New Hampshire, from 1945-1952. He was elected president of the American Palestine Exploration Society in 1871 (after his many travels to Palestine and the Middle East) and of Union Theological Seminary in 1880. He is the author of several books, including The New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible, Life of Edward Robinson, and Carmina Sanctorum, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demons in the USA argues that the discourse on the demonic that developed in the nineteenth century continues to exert a powerful hold over the American spiritual imagination. The book begins by tracing the conservative Christian encounter with Spiritualism in the nineteenth century and the mode of thinking about the demonic which developed. As Spiritualism’s core principles reappeared in the New Age, Christian interlocutors once more drew on this "anti-Spiritualist" paradigm to condemn the movement. This condemnation is absorbed by and amplified through the film The Exorcist. The author considers how the success of the film disseminates the anti-Spiritualist paradigm in surprising ways, entangling it with entertainment, science, and politics such that it influences psychology, the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, and the contemporary QAnon movement. This entanglement points to the broader argument of the work: While we may wish to think of a film as "entertainment" (and thus, having no bearing on "reality") or demonic material as "religious" (and thus exempt from categories like "politics" or "science"), the truth is that categories are not so easily separated. The author contends that the need to enforce the boundaries of such categories (and the failure to do so) is a hallmark of the intellectual construct of modernity, and that those who believe in demons in the contemporary United States are surprisingly modern in their views. The book grounds the importance of media to the twentieth-and twenty-first- century religious experience, arguing that the United States of today would not be possible without The Exorcist and its products. Demons in the USA will be of particular interest to scholars dealing with religion in America, those with a focus on religion and film, or those involved with contemporary demonology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skillfully blending painstaking research, telling anecdotes, and astute analysis, Carpenter - a scholar who has spent twenty years studying American evangelicalism reveals that, contrary to the popular opinion of the day, fundamentalism was alive and well in America in the late 1920s, and used its isolation over the next two decades to build new strength from within. The book describes how fundamentalists developed a pervasive network of organizations outside of the church setting and quietly strengthened the movement by creating their own schools and oragnizations, may of which are prominent today, including Fuller Theological Seminary and the publishing and radio enterprises of the Moody Bible Institute. Fundamentalists also used youth movements, missionary work and, perhaps most significantly, the burgeoning mass media industry to spread their message, especially through the powerful new medium of radio. Indeed, starting locally and growing to national broadcasts, evangelical preachers reached millions of listeners over the airwaves, in much the same way evangelists preach through television today. All this activity received no publicity outside of fundamentalist channels until Billy Graham burst on the scene in 1949. Carpenter vividly recounts how the charismatic preacher began packing stadiums with tens of thousands of listeners daily, drawing fundamentalism firmly back into the American consciousness after twenty years of public indifference. Alongside this vibrant history, Carpenter also offers many insights into fundamentalism during this period, and he describes many of the heated internal debates over issues of scholarship, separatism, and the role of women in leadership. Perhaps most important, he shows that the movement has never been stagnant or purely reactionary. It is based on an evolving ideology subject to debate, and dissension: a theology that adapts to changing times.
