Book excerpt: Other than that it tastes delicious with butter, what do you know about the knobbily-armoured, scarlet creature staring back at you from your fancy dinner plate? From ocean to stock pot, there are two sides to every animal story. For instance, since there are species of lobsters without claws, how exactly do you define a lobster? And how did a pauper’s food transform into a meal synonymous with a luxurious splurge? To answer these questions on behalf of lobster the animal is Richard J. King, a former fishmonger and commercial lobsterman, who has chronicled the creature’s long natural history. Part of the Animal series, King’s Lobster takes us on a journey through the history, biology, and culture of lobsters, including the creature’s economic and environmental status worldwide. He describes the evolution of technologies to capture these creatures and addresses the ethics of boiling them alive. Along the way, King also explores the salacious lobster palaces of the 1920s, the animal’s thousand-year status as an aphrodisiac, and how the lobster has inspired numerous artists, writers, and thinkers including Aristotle, Dickens, Thoreau, Dalí, and Woody Allen. Whether you want to liberate lobsters from their supermarket tanks or crack open their claws, this book is an essential read, describing the human connection to the lobster from his ocean home to the dinner table.

She couldn't wait to leave the place that made her feel worthless when she was at her most vulnerable. Seven years later and 170 pounds lighter, Allie's back, scouting locations for an indy flick. It's the perfect opportunity to exact the sweet revenge that comes with looking seriously hot. And the guy who broke her heart just happens to have made himself very available. . . Duncan Henry isn't used to being stood up, though the gorgeous blond who just ditched him looks like she does it all the time. Still, Duncan's determined to win the stranger over, if only to get close to someone with no connection to Tempest. The truth is, Duncan hasn't had anyone he could really talk to since Allison left. Yeah, there are plenty of things the ex-jock-turned-weatherman would change if he had the chance--and maybe his chance is closer than he thinks. . . Now, with Allie getting ready to shoot and Duncan trying to score, something's gotta give. The question is, who will give in first? New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shirley Jump spends her days eating, shopping and writing romantic comedies for Kensington Books as well as for both Harlequin NeXt and Harlequin Romance to feed her shoe addiction and avoid housework. More than 2,000 romances are published annually, making it difficult for fans and the librarians who advise them to keep pace with new titles, emerging authors, and constant evolution of this dynamic genre. Fortunately, romance expert and librarian Kristin Ramsdell provides a definitive guide to this fiction genre that serves as an indispensible resource for those interested in it—including fans searching for reading material—as well as for library staff, scholars, and romance writers themselves. This title updates the last edition of Romance Fiction: A Guide to the Genre, published in 1999.While the emphasis is on newer titles, many of the important older classics are retained, keeping the focus of the book on the entire genre, instead of only those titles published during the last decade. Specific changes include new chapters on linked and continuing romances, a new section on "Chick Lit" in the Contemporary Romance chapter, an expansion of coverage on the alternative reality subset. This is THE romance genre guide to have.

There is only one place Soleil can get answers; The Stygian and the Hell Princes that inhabit it. Traveling to The Stygian is easy enough for Soleil but comes with risks. The Hell Prince Belial is desperate to obtain her soul. Most Hell Princes have a sense of fair play, Belial is not most Hell Princes. He tried to obtain her soul by consuming her body during their last encounter. The encounter which took place on Earth resulted in the loss of Soleil’s wings. Soleil has serious concerns about encountering him in The Stygian. The murders are being committed on nights of the new moon. Realizing the new moon is a few days away, Soleil will set aside her personal safety to get the answers they need to stop the murder from happening. Book excerpt: The problem of the freedom or the bondage of the will was brought to this country by the Puritans, and it has been one of the unanswerable questions ever since. Whereas many other books have been written on Puritanism and on naturalism in their philosophic and theological manifestations, this book traces these ideas through our national literature. Chapter 1 begins with a brief account of St. Augustine's views concerning the will, continues with a full discussion of John Calvin's modifications of Augustine's views, and ends with a consideration of Puritan concepts of the will as found in the writings of Michael Wigglesworth and Jonathan Edwards. The second chapter looks at the subject of the predestinated will in the fiction of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Mary Wilkins Freeman and in the poetry of Emily Dickinson. In the succeeding chapter attention is turned to nineteenth-century authors actively hostile to the Calvinistic concept of predestination: Charles Brockden Brown, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Mark Twain. The next two chapters then trace the rise of naturalistic determinism and compare and contrast it with the Calvinistic doctrines of predestination and election. Focus is later directed on the blossoming of 'literary naturalism in America in the works of Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, Jack London, and Theodore Dreiser. The combining of naturalism with vestigial Calvinism in the novels of Ellen Glasgow and William Faulkner is the next subject of extended discussion. In the concluding two chapters attention is turned to libertarian philosophies opposed to predestination and naturalistic determinism, including deism, transcendentalism, pragmatism, and humanism. The influence of the great Russian novelists is presented, and William Dean Howells, Henry James, Edith Wharton, and Willa Cather are discussed as humanistic writers. Finally, the continuing tension between humanism and scientific determinism is noted in the writings of Ernest Hemingway. The themes of the book are illustrated with many examples from the prose and verse of American writers.

Book excerpt: In Explorers of the Dawn by Mazo de la Roche, three mischievous young wards – The Angel, the Seraph, and the narrator – run Mrs. Handsomebody's estate with a vengeance, sliding down banisters and adventuring boldly with Captain Pegg. Excerpt: "At last it came—a pale and trembling messenger that showed our little room to me in a new aspect—one of mystery and grotesque shadows. I was on my feet in an instant. I shook Angel's shoulder. "Up with you!" I whispered, hoarsely. "The hour has come!" I knew that drastic measures must be taken with The Seraph, so I just grasped him under the armpits and stood him on his feet without a word."
