Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the nouvelle thŽologie, a clerical movement that revitalized the Catholic ChurchÕs role in twentieth-century French political life. Secularism has been a cornerstone of French political culture since 1905, when the republic formalized the separation of church and state. At times the barrier of secularism has seemed impenetrable, stifling religious actors wishing to take part in political life. Yet in other instances, secularism has actually nurtured movements of the faithful. Soldiers of God in a Secular World explores one such case, that of the nouvelle thŽologie, or new theology. Developed in the interwar years by Jesuits and Dominicans, the nouvelle thŽologie reimagined the ChurchÕs relationship to public life, encouraging political activism, engaging with secular philosophy, and inspiring doctrinal changes adopted by the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. Nouveaux thŽologiens charted a path between the old alliance of throne and altar and secularismÕs demand for the privatization of religion. Envisioning a Church in but not of the public sphere, Catholic thinkers drew on theological principles to intervene in political questions while claiming to remain at armÕs length from politics proper. Sarah Shortall argues that this Òcounter-politicsÓ was central to the mission of the nouveaux thŽologiens: by recoding political statements in the ostensibly apolitical language of doctrine, priests were able to enter into debates over fascism and communism, democracy and human rights, colonialism and nuclear war. This approach found its highest expression during the Second World War, when the nouveaux thŽologiens led the spiritual resistance against Nazism. Claiming a powerful public voice, they collectively forged a new role for the Church amid the momentous political shifts of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An excellent study of churches on the fringe that incubate new ideas and shed new light on mainstream religion.”—Times Higher Education Independent Catholics are not formally connected to the pope in Rome. They practice apostolic succession, seven sacraments, and devotion to the saints. But without a pope, they can change quickly and experiment freely—with some affirming communion for the divorced, women’s ordination, clerical marriage, and same-sex marriage. From their early modern origins in the Netherlands to their contemporary proliferation in the United States, these “other Catholics” represent an unusually liberal, mobile, and creative version of America’s largest religion. In The Other Catholics, Julie Byrne shares the remarkable history and current activity of independent Catholics, who number at least two hundred communities and a million members across the United States. She focuses in particular on the Church of Antioch, one of the first Catholic groups to ordain women in modern times. Through archival documents and interviews, Byrne tells the story of the unforgettable leaders and surprising influence of these understudied churches, which, when included in Catholic history, change the narrative arc and total shape of modern Catholicism. As Pope Francis fights to soften Roman doctrines with a pastoral touch and his fellow Roman bishops push back with equal passion, independent Catholics continue to leap ahead of Roman reform, keeping key Catholic traditions but adding a progressive difference. “Byrne’s enlightening research and analysis will undoubtedly raise awareness of these little-known Catholic denominations.”

Book excerpt: ANATHEMA / Publicly declared excommunication man from ecclesial communion. It applies to certain people as the highest disciplinary measure of ecclesiastical penalties for serious public sins against the Church, as a rule, for heretical or schismatic movement. Anathema also undergo certain theological statements. This means that such statements are not only false, but generally incompatible with Orthodox faith and, therefore, lead to a falling away from it (heresy). / In the church sense of the word anathema has not cursed the person (eg, a heretic), wishing him ill, and says it is the actual determination of the Church. If he is alive, he has a chance to repent and return to church. In Synodikon with anathemas most famous heretics (which must be read in the church on the feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy in the first week of Lent) states that they have already laid the anathema. Thus, public anathema only brings to the public a fait accompli of their falling away (upon heresy) from the Church. / Although the heretics who have been subjected to anathema, fell away from the Church - the Body of Christ, the question of their posthumous fate remains an open question, since God judges them. / Commandment stop ecclesial communion with heretics is already in the letter of the Apostle Paul: ... the heretic man denies vedy, for theirs is such is subverted, and sins, and there is self-condemned (Titus 3: 10-11.). / The act of public anathema not only serves as a warning against falling away into heresy and call to repentance for those who have already dropped out, but also becomes a kind of church law (canon), whose knowledge is necessary for bishops, priests, and of all those who teach the people Orthodox faith. If the lack of warning "anathema" signal could be a mitigating factor for fallen away, the presence of an aggravating circumstance is anathema to those who knew about it, she decided to neglect, as well as for those who do not bother to learn about it. /
