Book Synopsis Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon by : Aloysius Ajab Amin
Download or read book Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon written by Aloysius Ajab Amin and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon is an ambitious effort as the authors try to set a blue print for Cameroon's economy. In the 1980s facing economic crisis, and as dictated by the structural adjustment programme, Cameroon sharply cut public investment expenditures before later cutting government consumption which were followed by privatisation, liquidation of public companies and reduction in the size of the public sector. All these measures are believed to have had devastating effects on the economy. Given the performance of the economy so far the authors suggest that much more effort, with a strong commitment of the main stakeholders, is required to guarantee sustainable economic development in Cameroon. Truly, very few countries in Africa possess such enormous human and natural resources as Cameroon does. This volume brings out the challenges Cameroon faces in its quest for development as well as for designing appropriate strategies for addressing those development challenges.

This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is at the centre of the economies of many developing countries, and its stagnation and poor performance across large parts of Africa is a major cause for concern. First published in 1990, this book focuses on the nature and role of incentives in agricultural organization and production in East Africa, looking in particular at the political and ideological determinants of that role. Mats Lundahl analyses ways of improving agricultural performance, and considers the ‘African socialism’ of Julius Nyerere in contrast with the market-led approaches, which he favours. A detailed title, this volume will of interest to all those concerned with the issues of rural development, including students of development studies, economics, and African studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, Incentives and Economic Systems is a selection of papers presented at the Eighth Arne Ryde Symposium at Frostavallen, Sweden on how institutions attempt to guide individual behaviour by manipulating the social and economic incentive system. These economic and social aspects of incentives determine ‘rational’ and ‘irrational’ behaviour by individuals and organizations across various economic systems. The essays in the volume deal with various aspects of the incentive problems and the various manifestations of such problems, along with moral and ethical issues. The essays will be an enlightening read for students of economics, policymaking and international politics.

Book excerpt: Praise for the previous editions:?Emphasizing a close link between development theory and the actual practice of economic policymaking, Rapley grounds the discussion in a way that will be much appreciated by both students and their instructors.... [He] writes with a rare clarity.??Bruce E. Moon, American Political Science Review?Concise, yet all encompassing and meticulously referenced.... Rapley?s study is determined to unravel the intricacies of development practice across the third world and map out its intellectual roots. The project certainly succeeds in these goals.? ?Firooza Pavri, Progress in Development StudiesThis lucidly written book, thoroughly updated, provides both an assessment of the current state of development theory and an extensive survey of the impact of evolving policies and practices throughout the developing world.Rapley critically traces the evolution of development theory from its strong statist orientation in the early postwar period, through the neoclassical phase, to the present emerging consensus on people-centered development. New to the third edition is a chapter on ?postdevelopment? thought, as well as increased attention to the challenges posed by weak states and by critical environmental issues.Using a wide range of examples, Rapley shows where and how various approaches to development have worked?or failed?continuing to confront the question of why development remains so far out of reach for so many poor countries.John Rapley is senior lecturer in the Department of Government, University of the West Indies (Mona). His publications include Globalization and Inequality: Neoliberalism?s Downward Spiral.Contents: Introduction. The Progress of Development. Development Theory in the Postwar Period. State-Led Development in Practice. The Neoclassical Answer to Failure. Neoclassical Reform in Practice. Development Theory in the Wake of Structural Adjustment. The End of the Developmental State.
