Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the topic of eddy current nondestructive evaluation, the most commonly practiced method of electromagnetic nondestructive evaluation (NDE). It emphasizes a clear presentation of the concepts, laws and relationships of electricity and magnetism upon which eddy current inspection methods are founded. The chapters include material on signals obtained using many common eddy current probe types in various testing environments. Introductory mathematical and physical concepts in electromagnetism are introduced in sufficient detail and summarized in the Appendices for easy reference. Worked examples and simple calculations that can be done by hand are distributed throughout the text. These and more complex end-of-chapter examples and assignments are designed to impart a working knowledge of the connection between electromagnetic theory and the practical measurements described. The book is intended to equip readers with sufficient knowledge to optimize routine eddy current NDE inspections, or design new ones. It is useful for graduate engineers and scientists seeking a deeper understanding of electromagnetic methods of NDE than can be found in a guide for practitioners.

Book excerpt: For well over a decade, the numerical approach to field computation has been gaining progressively greater importance. Analytical methods of field compu tation are, at best, unable to accommodate the very wide variety of configura tions in which fields must be computed. On the other hand, numerical methods can accommodate many practical configurations that analytical methods cannot. With the advent of high-speed digital computers, numerical field computations have finally become practical. However, in order to implement numerical methods of field computation, we need algorithms, numerical methods, and mathematical tools that are largely quite different from those that have been traditionally used with analytical methods. Many of these algorithms have, in fact, been presented in the large number of papers that have been published on this subject in the last two decades. And to some of those who are already experienced in the art of numerical field computations, these papers, in addition to their own original work, are enough to give them the knowledge that they need to perform practical numerical field computations.

Book excerpt: The era of the personal computer has, without doubt, permanently altered our life style in a myriad of ways. The "brain" of the personal computer is the microprocessor (together with RAM and ROM) which makes the decisions needed for the computer to perform in the desired manner. The microprocessor continues to evolve as increasingly complex tasks are required. While not sharing the limelight of the microprocessor, the "heart" of the personal computer, namely the power supply, is equally important since without the necessary source of power the microprocessor would be a useless piece of silicon. The power supply of twenty years ago was much different than its modem day equivalent. At the dawn of the personal computer era in the late 1970s, de power was obtained from a simple diode bridge. However, the need for smooth, regulated DC at low voltage required at the same time both a bulky input transformer and a large dc side ftlter. Those computer fans present at the birth of this industry can remember the large boxes housing our Altair, Cromemco and Northstar computers which was made necessary largely because of the huge power supply. It is not well appreciated but certainly true that the huge sucess of the Apple II computer in those days was due, at least in part, to the relatively slim proftle of the machine. This sleek appearance was largely due to the adoption of the then new and unproven switched mode power supply.

Book excerpt: Understand the theory of eddy currents with this essential reference Eddy currents are electrical current loops produced when a conductor passes through a magnetic field, or is otherwise subject to a change in magnetic field direction. These currents play a significant role in many industrial processes and areas of electrical engineering. Their properties and applications are therefore a subject of significant interest for electrical engineers and other professionals. Eddy Currents: Theory, Modelling and Applications offers a comprehensive reference on eddy currents in theory and practice. It begins with an introduction to the underlying theory of eddy currents, before proceeding to both closed-form and numerical solutions, and finally describing current and future applications. The result is an essential tool for anyone whose work requires an understanding of these ubiquitous currents. Eddy Currents readers will also find: Professional insights from an author team with decades of combined experience in research and industry Detailed treatment of methods including finite difference, finite element, and integral equation techniques Over 100 computer-generated figures to illustrate key points Eddy Currents is a must-have reference for researchers and industry professionals in electrical engineering and related fields.

Book excerpt: This monograph addresses fundamental aspects of mathematical modeling and numerical solution methods of electromagnetic problems involving low frequencies, i.e. magnetostatic and eddy current problems which are rarely presented in the applied mathematics literature. In the first part, the authors introduce the mathematical models in a realistic context in view of their use for industrial applications. Several geometric configurations of electric conductors leading to different mathematical models are carefully derived and analyzed, and numerical methods for the solution of the obtained problems are given. Related issues such as convergence of the approximations and error estimates are discussed. The second part of the monograph presents various coupled problems that involve eddy current or magnetostatic problems, in particular magneto-hydrodynamic problems and magnetic shaping problems concerning the melt flow of electrically conducting metals, induction heating processes, inductively coupled plasmas and ferromagnetic screening modeling. The presentation of each model comes with numerical illustration from industrial applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Electromagnetism refers to the modern concept of computer-aided analysis, and design, of virtually all electric devices such as motors, machines, transformers, etc., as well as of the equipment inthe currently booming field of telecommunications, such as antennas, radars, etc. The present book is uniquely written to enable the reader-- be it a student, a scientist, or a practitioner-- to successfully perform important simulation techniques and to design efficient computer software for electromagnetic device analysis. Numerous illustrations, solved exercises, original ideas, and an extensive and up-to-date bibliography make it a valuable reference for both experts and beginners in the field. A researcher and practitioner will find in it information rarely available in other sources, such as on symmetry, bilateral error bounds by complimentarity, edge and face elements, treatment of infinite domains, etc. At the same time, the book is a useful teaching tool for courses in computational techniques in certain fields of physics and electrical engineering. As a self-contained text, it presents an extensive coverage of the most important concepts from Maxwells equations to computer-solvable algebraic systems-- for both static, quasi-static, and harmonic high-frequency problems.BenefitsTo the EngineerA sound background necessary not only to understand the principles behind variational methods and finite elements, but also to design pertinent and well-structured software. To the Specialist in Numerical ModelingThe book offers new perspectives of practical importance on classical issues: the underlying symmetry of Maxwell equations, their interaction with other fields of physics in real-life modeling, the benefits of edge and face elements, approaches to error analysis, and "complementarity."To the TeacherAn expository strategy that will allow you to guide the student along a safe and easy route through otherwise difficult concepts: weak formulations and their relation to fundamental conservation principles of physics, functional spaces, Hilbert spaces, approximation principles, finite elements, and algorithms for solving linear systems. At a higher level, the book provides a concise and self-contained introduction to edge elements and their application to mathematical modeling of the basic electromagnetic phenomena, and static problems, such as eddy-current problems and microwaves in cavities. To the StudentSolved exercises, with "hint" and "full solution" sections, will both test and enhance the understanding of the material. Numerous illustrations will help in grasping difficult mathematical concepts.
