Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amphibia of the Indo-Australian Archipelago: With 29 Illustrations In the preface to the two volumes of this series, describing the Reptiles of the indo-australian Archipelago, I have given a short history about the work on the Vertebrates of Dutch East-India. It began with the publication of a work on the fishes of the Archipelago of which four volumes have already appeared. With the valuable cooperation of Dr. J. C. Koningsberger, while director of 's Lands Plantentuin at Buitenzorg, Java, and later on with that of his successor Dr. W. M. Docters Van Leeuwen, the original plan got successively a wider scope and the preparation of a series of handbooks of the vertebrate fauna of the Archipelago was recommended. In 1912 the aid of the government was gained for the publication of the two quoted volumes about the Reptiles, which were issued in 1915 and 1917. It was then allowed to presume, that the governmental aid would also be bestowed upon a volume describing the indo-australian Amphibia, which was under preparation by Prof. P. N. van Kampen. However, in 1921, when the manuscript of his work was finished, the economical situation was so totally changed, that there was no chance to get the financial support from the government, necessary for issuing the volume. This financial dilemna was solved by the "Zoologisch Insulindefonds," by the "Gresshoff-Rumphius-fonds" and by the "Leidsch Universiteitsfonds," who were ready to support the finances. All those who are interested in the fauna of this region are therefore indebted to the councils of these institutions, and it is a pleasing duty of thanking them for their valuable help so cordially given. The Amphibia of the indo-australian Archipelago described in the present volume enumerate 254 species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the results of the first archaeological survey and excavations carried out in the fascinating and remote Aru Islands, Eastern Indonesia between 1995 and 1997. The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who stopped here in search of the Birds of Paradise on his voyage through the Indo-Malay Archipelago in the 1850s, was the first to draw attention to the group. The results reveal a complex and fascinating history covering the last 30,000 years from its early settlement by hunter-gatherers, the late Holocene arrival of ceramic producing agriculturalists, later associations with the Bird of Paradise trade and the colonial expansion of the Dutch trading empires. The excavations and finds from two large Pleistocene caves, Liang Lemdubu and Nabulei Lisa, are reported in detail documenting the changing environmental and cultural history of the islands from when they were connected to Greater Australia and used by hunter/gatherers to their formation as islands and use by agriculturalists. The results of the excavation of the late Neolithic - Metal Age midden at Wangil are discussed, as is the mysterious pre-Colonial fort at Ujir and the 350-year old ruins of forts and a church associated with the Dutch garrisons.

It is hoped that it will prove useful to resource managers, ecologists, environmental scientists and local government personnel, and be enlightening to Sulawesi's inhabitants and visitors. Sulawesi is one of the least-known islands of Indonesia, and wise environmental management, including the proper assessment of environmental management, including the proper assessment of environmental impacts arising from development projects and other activities, is currently very difficult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our own juvenile stage, many of us received our wide-eyed introduction to the wonders of nature by watching the metamorphosis of swimming tadpoles into leaping frogs and toads. The recent alarming declines in amphibian populations worldwide and the suitability of amphibians for use in answering research questions in disciplines as diverse as molecular systematics, animal behavior, and evolutionary biology have focused enormous attention on tadpoles. Despite this popular and scientific interest, relatively little is known about these fascinating creatures. In this indispensable reference, leading experts on tadpole biology relate what we currently know about tadpoles and what we might learn from them in the future. Tadpoles provides detailed summaries of tadpole morphology, development, behavior, ecology, and environmental physiology; explores the evolutionary consequences of the tadpole stage; synthesizes available information on their biodiversity; and presents a standardized terminology and an exhaustive literature review of tadpole biology.
