Major changes came, however, as the twentieth century reached midpoint. Virginia Beach's construction boom began displacing well-kept farmsteads. First, along Witchduck, Kempsville, and Princess Anne Roads and Parliament Drive, and later along Holland Road, dairy barns and farmhouses gave way to the bulldozer's blade. Single family homes, apartments, and shopping centers sprang up where milk cows grazed a few years earlier. Too soon, the last vestiges of that special era have all but disappeared. We hope this volume calls up pleasant memories for those who once lived in this Amish-Mennonite community, and for readers not to privileged, may the photos and stories contained here provide a rare glimpse into what many of us still fondly recall as "living at Kempsville."

Book excerpt: The Amish movement, whose members live in 19 states of Canada and Central America are a mystery to just about everyone except themselves. Here is a group which has deliberately passed on just about everything modern society has to offer, extending as far as electricity, gasoline, television, automobiles and movies. Yet Amish children are not educationally deprived in any way and regularly score above average on standardised tests. This book presents background information including a bibliography on this most interesting movement and includes also a review of Supreme Court rulings related to the Amish.

Book excerpt: Fashion designers know the impact of clothing. They study it, they make a living off of it, and they know how to design immodesty, well. Can plain people apply these same concepts to understand how modesty is achieved and when it is compromised? This volume, which packs in a tremendous amount of research, nurtures an appreciation for that single practice identifying the plain churches' convictions most clearly: dress. It will help the reader appreciate both God's mandate for holiness in dress and the many subtle-and not-so-subtle-ways it is under attack today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their distinctive head coverings, plain dress, and quiet, unassuming demeanor, the Mennonites are a distinctive presence within the often flamboyant and proud people of Texas. If you have seen them at a gas station, in a grocery store, or even at the Dallas–Fort Worth airport, you have probably taken note and wondered how they came to be there. In this photographic tour of two Texas Mennonite communities, separated by almost 450 miles, Laura L. Camden and Susan Gaetz Duarte introduce you to the Beachy Amish Mennonites of Lott, a small community of approximately 160 people in Central Texas, and the very different Mennonites of Seminole, a West Texas farming community of more than five thousand residents and five separate congregations, several of which still speak the Mennonite Low German. Spending more than a year getting to know the families, participating in day-to-day activities, and photographing the unique culture of the communities, Camden and Gaetz Duarte developed deep insight into not just the religious beliefs but the family relationships, role expectations, and daily routines of these people. Through their camera lenses, they offer others a touchingly intimate view of a unique lifestyle seldom experienced by outsiders. In a foreword, former governor Ann Richards identifies the book as part of both the long photographic tradition in Texas and the tradition of cultural and religious diversity in the state. Mark L. Louden’s introduction provides the historical backgrounds of Mennonites in Europe, their core beliefs, and their development into branches in North America. Dennis Carlyle Darling offers insightful comments on the photography that allows an intimate, respectful view of the people, their lifestyle, and their culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now back in print with a new essay, this classic of Iowa history focuses on the Old Order Amish Mennonites, the state’s most distinctive religious minority. Sociologist Elmer Schwieder and historian Dorothy Schwieder began their research with the largest group of Old Order Amish in the state, the community near Kalona in Johnson and Washington counties, in April 1970; they extended their studies and friendships in later years to other Old Order settlements as well as the slightly less conservative Beachy Amish. A Peculiar People explores the origin and growth of the Old Order Amish in Iowa, their religious practices, economic organization, family life, the formation of new communities, and the vital issue of education. Included also are appendixes giving the 1967 “Act Relating to Compulsory School Attendance and Educational Standards”; a sample “Church Organization Financial Agreement,” demonstrating the group’s unusual but advantageous mutual financial system; and the 1632 Dortrecht Confession of Faith, whose eighteen articles cover all the basic religious tenets of the Old Order Amish. Thomas Morain’s new essay describes external and internal issues for the Iowa Amish from the 1970s to today. The growth of utopian Amish communities across the nation, changes in occupation (although The Amish Directory still lists buggy shop operators, wheelwrights, and one lone horse dentist), the current state of education and health care, and the conscious balance between modern and traditional ways are reflected in an essay that describes how the Old Order dedication to Gelassenheit—the yielding of self to the interests of the larger community—has served its members well into the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one hundred year story of the Amish church depicts the survival of the believers in the early part of the nineteenth century. Revealing the agony of the Great Schism of 1865 which fractured the Amish church, Yoder reveals the coming maturity of the Old Order Amish and the Amish Mennonites, who merged with the Mennonites early in the twentieth century. This book sheds light on the identity and heritage of faith and lifestyle of today's Amish and many Mennonites, and posits that although they hold in common the basic Christian faith, differences in their patterns of obedience remain.
